HU's Maxwell steady and spectacular for MEAC contenders

HAMPTON, Virginia — Du'Vaughn Maxwell sprints and soars, often leaving his mark on games with vocal and spectacular force. As he and his game developed and matured, however, he learned that sometimes less is more, that silence and calm can be as effective as highlight video and mega-watt energy.

As the college career of Hampton University's senior forward winds down to a precious few games, he is grateful for the opportunity to play with, to bond with, to lead a young team that he is certain will succeed long after he departs.

"It's been a learning process," Maxwell said. "It's understanding people. High energy was all I knew, but as I've stayed in the gym more and developed skills, I understood there's different ways for me to affect the game."

The Pirates (17-11, 12-3 MEAC) are peaking as they play their final regular-season game Thursday at home versus North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center, the back end of a men's and women's doubleheader that begins at 6 p.m.
