DANVILLE, Virginia  -- It’s just another Hall of Fame induction to add to the already impressive resume for Danville native Marty Miller.

The Norfolk State director of athletics — a long-time baseball coach for the Spartans — was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Saturday night. Even though it is his fifth Hall of Fame, Miller feels grounded by the honor.

“It’s been a very humbling experience, and especially when I think about how I got started in athletics,” Miller said Monday. “As I indicated the other night, when I started, I was trying to play baseball.”

Miller, who always felt he had to prove himself in order to make baseball teams because he was small growing up, stumbled into the head coaching position at Norfolk State, a post he held for 32 seasons. Miller was a Norfolk State assistant coach in 1972 and became head coach in 1973.

“I’d had no coaching experience when I started coaching here at Norfolk State,” he said. “I was here in Norfolk, and they needed a baseball coach. So, I was approached, and I was working somewhere downtown, and they asked me if I would come over and coach the team for two weeks.”
