Lamar fends off Grambling in home opener

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Caleb Berry broke the Lamar record for career passing touchdowns as the Cardinals defeated Grambling State 42-27 on Saturday night at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Lamar started out sluggish in the season opener for both teams, falling behind Grambling in the second quarter. The Cardinals did get on the board first when Berry found wide receiver Mark Roberts streaking down the left sideline for a 69-yard touchdown pass. Berry finished the game 27-of-45 for 389 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

Despite the fast start, Lamar could not capitalize on numerous Grambling mistakes. After a bad punt snapped sailed over Tiger punter Johnathan Wallace's head and gave Lamar good field position, Berry threw an interception that was returned 74 yards. But the Cardinals would hold Grambling to a field goal that gave the Tigers the lead.
