Chowan Hawks Hang On, Top Elizabeth City State

MURFREESBORO, North Carolina -- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned a narrow 70-66 victory against Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks improve to 10-6 overall with the win and move to 4-3 in the league. The Vikings slip to 9-11 on the season and 2-5 against CIAA competition after Saturday's setback.

Mark Anthony Buright led all players in the contest with 21 points in the win. Kyree Bethel added 16 points while Warren Powers grabbed 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive).

Elizabeth City State had three players score double-digit points in the setback. Miykael Faulcon led the effort with 19 points. Kentrell Kay and DeCarlos Anderson added 14 points and 12 points, respectively.

A basket by Tiron Brown followed by a made free throw by Melletee gave the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. Faulcon's three-pointer on the next possession tied the score. Elizabeth City State controlled the scoreboard through the midway point of the first half until a three-pointer by Bethel restored the advantage (21-20) with 7:49 left to play before halftime.



With the score tied 24-24, Chowan worked to develop a 12-3 run, resulting in a 36-27 lead by the 1:27 mark. The Hawks held the Vikings at-bay and closed out the half with a 38-32 advantage.

Chowan maintained in control throughout the second half, leading by double-digit points until the 4:45 mark. Elizabeth City State clawed their way back to pull within one point (65-54) as late as the 1:11 mark, but Chowan held to on to close out the game with the 70-66 win.

The Hawks return to action on January 21st when they travel to Petersburg for a CIAA Northern Division match-up against Virginia State University.
