HAMPTON, Virginia — Hampton University's women attempted to make it as easy as possible on a difficult day for head coach David Six.
Six attended the funeral of friend and former colleague Darrin Donahoo on Monday afternoon, then watched as his Lady Pirates dismantled North Carolina Central 75-36 at the HU Convocation Center.
"It was a tough day for me," Six said. "I was there, but I wasn't there."
Hampton (9-9, 5-0 MEAC) was never threatened on the way to its 54th consecutive win against conference competition. The Lady Pirates jumped to an early 10-point lead, reached 50 before the Eagles hit 20, and 70 before NCCU got to 30.
HU sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (30 points) nearly outscored NCCU by herself. The Eagles had almost as many turnovers (36) as shot attempts (40).
The Lady Pirates were on-point defensively in their most one-sided win of the season, and Six used his bench more liberally than in many previous games.
