WSSU Rams say they're ready for challenge as they begin CIAA schedule

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
That’s the best way to describe the CIAA conference season, which Winston-Salem State will open tonight at Lincoln (Pa.).

Over the next 50 days, CIAA schools will each play 16 conference games to prepare for the big stage that is the CIAA Tournament in Charlotte. To have success on that big stage, teams need to perform well in the small and usually sold-out gyms during the heat of the regular season in the tradition-rich CIAA.

James Wilhelmi of WSSU, who will be making his trek through the CIAA as a head coach for the
first time, said there is no better time of the season.

“This is what you work for,” Wilhelmi said. “And the rivalries run deep in the CIAA and we’ll get a great test this weekend and on Monday — having to face two of the best teams on that side of the conference.”
