3 TSU coaches have JSU on resumes

JACKSON, Mississippi  -- Texas Southern coach Darrell Asberry played quarterback, earned team MVP honors as a senior and was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Jackson State.

TSU assistant head coach/offensive line coach Carl Roberts spent many years as JSU’s offensive line coach. TSU offensive coordinator John Shannon held the same post at JSU from 1994 to 2000. He was named AFCA Division I-AA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000 and took home some other awards that season.

As of Monday, the three coaches hadn’t had the chance to talk about TSU’s matchup with JSU in the W.C. Gorden Classic, which kicks off at 6 p.m. tonight at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, but they grasped the significance.

“We haven’t all sat down and talked about the game,” Asberry said during the SWAC teleconference on Monday. “The relationship us three have is very unique and we understand, as coaches, what this one means to us.
