Wingo, Thompson power UNA over Miles in opener

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Luke Wingo and Lamonte Thompson appeared to be in midseason form as the University of North Alabama opened the season with a 34-17 win over Miles College at Legion Field tonight.

Thompson ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, and Wingo ran for a score and passed for another as the Lions, of the Gulf South Conference, built a 27-3 lead in the fourth quarter over former UNA player Reginald Ruffin and the Golden Bears, of the SIAC.

A sequence late in the first half turned the game for the Lions. Wingo atoned for a goal-line interception moments earlier with 1-yard TD toss to Dre Hall just eight seconds before halftime to put the Lions in front 14-3.

Thompson capped his night with a 30-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter. In three games against Miles, Thompson has gained 462 yards and scored five touchdowns.
