Alcorn Braves aim to make most of bye week

LORMAN, Mississippi -- Alcorn State won four consecutive games after dropping its season opener to a then-ranked Georgia Tech team.

When the Braves lost to Grambling in 2014, they subsequently reeled off four victories in a row.

Now Alcorn State will use the bye week to try to gear up for a similar run after it suffered its second consecutive loss to the Tigers, 35-34 in overtime, this past Saturday.

“We’re a resilient football team,” Braves coach Jay Hopson said on the SWAC’s teleconference on Monday.

“We certainly have to do some things better fundamentally. It (the bye week) gives us a few days to get ready for Southern (next week). We have to go back to work. We lost and I’m head coach, so that’s my responsibility. We have to get better this week coming up.”

Alcorn State (4-2, 3-1 SWAC) led by 14 points at halftime and the offense appeared to be cruising with 28 points. The Braves managed just six points in the second half and overtime.
