ASU investigating rules violations in football program

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Alabama State University is currently conducting, at the request of the NCAA, an internal investigation of potential NCAA rules violations within its football program, the university acknowledged.

ASU acknowledged the investigation after depositions from university president Gwendolyn Boyd and athletic director Melvin Hines were made publicly available as part of the wrongful termination lawsuit filed by former football coach Reggie Barlow.

In those depositions, both Boyd and Hines admit to receiving correspondence from the NCAA notifying ASU that allegations had been received accusing the Hornets football program of holding practices last spring, despite being forbidden to do so because of the program’s failure to meet Academic Progress Rate minimum standards. Hines also stated that allegations of exceeding the weekly 20-hour practice time limit during Barlow’s final semester (Fall 2014) were part of the internal review.
