'Beat-up' N.C. A&T Aggies head to Hampton for MEAC opener

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — A month into the season, N.C. A&T coach Rod Broadway still isn’t exactly sure what kind of football team his Aggies are.

They’re 2-1, a record that could’ve been scripted back in August. They clobbered inferior Shaw, got clobbered by superior North Carolina and eked out a victory against Elon.

But now what? A&T hits the road for its MEAC opener at Hampton at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Pirates (2-2, 1-1) are coached by A&T Hall of Famer Connell Maynor, a star quarterback for the Aggies in his playing days.

“They’re the favorites. They’re the team to beat, the big Aggies,” Maynor said this week. “They’ve got a great football team. ... That team last year could’ve been undefeated and should’ve been a playoff team.”

Maybe so. But this year’s Aggies have struggled with a young offensive line through three games, and they’re not the same team they were in August.
