Coach's point system makes NSU Spartans earn their way to play

NORFOLK, Virginia -- Sitting in his Echols Hall office, Norfolk State basketball coach Robert Jones powered up his laptop and opened a spreadsheet.

On it was a list of his players' names, each with a two- or three-digit number to the right of it.

The numbers weren't your typical basketball statistics.

Rather, they're the numbers that guide the program.



Jones, entering his third year as head coach after six seasons as an assistant at the school, uses a points system that helps him dole out playing time and players' gear.

Players are awarded points for everything from winning sprints and rebounding drills to being on the victorious team in a scrimmage. The top points-earners are rewarded with spots in the nine- or 10-man rotation and are showered with items like team-issued T-shirts, hoodies, warm-up suits and game shoes.
