Virginia Union Goes to 4-1 on 22-13 Win Over Shaw
RALEIGH, North Carolina -- For the second consecutive game, the Virginia Union University defense shut down an opposing offense as the Panthers downed Shaw University 22-13 in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, October 3.
The Panther defense held the Shaw offense to -25 total rushing yards, marking the second straight game where a VUU opponent had -25 yards total rushing.
Virginia Union's quarterback, Shawheem Dowdy, completed 12 of 26 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns, marking the second game this season where Dowdy has thrown three or more touchdown passes.
VUU's Lamar Webster led the Panthers on a ground game with 64 yards, despite having a driving rain making it difficult to gain yardage on the ground.
Virginia Union's Chazton McKenzie had four catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
VUU got on the board first with a 38-yard field goal by Anthony Michael with 2:40 left in the first quarter.
McKenzie then made the score 10-0 by hauling in a Dowdy pass from seven yards out with 9:39 left in the second quarter.
Virginia Union surged to a 16-0 lead when Dowdy hit Olu Izegwire from 18-yards out with 2:48 left in the first half.
After taking a 16-7 lead at halftime, VUU scored again when McKenzie hauled in a 48-yard pass for his second score of the day to make the score 22-7.
Two more Shaw field goals made the final score 22-13.
The win raised VUU to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in CIAA play. Shaw fell to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now travels to Lincoln University, Pa., to face Lincoln (Pa.) University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. The game will be broadcast live over WFTH 1590 AM in Richmond, Va.
