WVSU Jackets Spot UVA-Wise 28, Rally for 52-45 Win



WISE, Virginia  --  The Yellow Jackets fell behind 28-0, trailed 38-21 at halftime, and still managed to come away with a 52-45 win at UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon.

The host Cavaliers scored four times in the first 10 minutes of the game consuming just 1:55 of clock to take a 28-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter, the final two touchdowns coming on a 60 yard interception return and a blocked punt covered by the Cavaliers in the West Virginia State end zone.

WVSU finally got on the scoreboard when Matt Kinnick hit Quinton Gray with a 71 yard scoring strike still in the first quarter.

That began an offensive surge that saw the Yellow Jackets outscore Wise 52-10 over the the next three quarters.

The only Cavalier touchdown came when they blocked a WVSU field goal attempt two seconds before halftime and ran it back.

Gray pulled in a 29 yard pass from Kinnick with 10:15 left to play to tie things up at 38-38. Tyrone Barber ran for a 19-yard gouchdown on the Jackets next possession to give them their first lead of the game.

Barber added another score to make it 52-38 a few moments later.

The Cavaliers added the final points with 1:54 remaining.

Though he tossed his first interceptions of the season early in the game Kinnick recovered to finish 21-38 passing for 336 yards and three touchdowns.

Gray hauled in nine passes for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Barber paced WVSU on the ground with 49 yards.

Dennis Gardeck led the defense with 16 tackles with Will Merritt added eight tackles and picking off two passes as the defense allowed just the one late score in the second hslf after the Jackets had taked a two touchdown lead.

The Yellow Jackets next host Notre Dame for Homecoming at 1:30 Saturday.
