Culver: FAMU’s baseball rise continues with facilities upgrades

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- What a difference a few years makes.

When Jamey Shouppe took over as Florida A&M’s head baseball coach before the 2013-14 season, the Rattlers were in some deep trouble.

The facilities, as Shouppe put it, were “sub-high school.” The team itself won just seven games in its previous season. There was a lack of confidence surrounding the program, despite a rich history and fans eager to see a return to prominence.

Shouppe had is work cut out for him. And there’s no denying he’s risen to the challenge. He’s already upgraded the team, which last season won its first MEAC tournament title since 1994. Now he’s going to work on the facilities.

Before the start of next season the Rattlers will have a netting behind home plate instead of the old chain-link fence that used to obscure the view from the bleachers. Plus, there’s a clubhouse in the works specifically for the baseball field.
