Heinecke is a one-man band of strength at WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- In his cramped office inside the Bowman Gray Stadium Fieldhouse Marc Heinecke sees plenty of clutter.

But for Heinecke, the busy head strength and conditioning coach at Winston-Salem State, there’s not enough time in the day to keep a clean office.

As a one-man staff he’s in charge of keeping the more than 200 athletes at WSSU in top shape. That means long hours, but for somebody who has a passion for his job he isn’t complaining.

At the Division II level, Heinecke is what you call a bonus baby. There aren’t a lot of schools, at least in the budget-conscious CIAA, that have the luxury of a full-time strength coach.

“I think there are about three or four schools (out of 12) in the CIAA who have a full-time strength guy,” said Heinecke, who is entering his fourth year at WSSU.
