Short-handed Southern has no problem beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 69-55

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas — Southern played without two starters, but it mattered little as the Jaguars defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 69-55 on Saturday night in the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Center D’Adrian Smith missed his fifth straight game because of a sprained ankle and guard Trelun Banks was sidelined because of a sprained ankle he aggravated against Jackson State on Monday.

But Adrian Rodgers scored 15, Jared Sam had 13 points and Rashad Andrews 12. Sam grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the Jaguars outrebounded the Golden Lions 42-27 to win their third consecutive game.

“I thought we did a pretty good job of rebounding the basketball,” Southern coach Roman Banks said. “I thought we guarded them well, and we played with a whole bunch of energy.”

Southern (11-7, 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) is expected to be without Allen and Banks again when it visits Mississippi Valley State on Monday. UAPB fell to 1-3, 3-15.
