JACKSON, Mississippi -- Saturday's game against Alcorn State presented Jackson State with a chance to separate itself from the Braves.
The Tigers were tied with Southern for second place in the SWAC, were ahead of Alcorn State by a game and could have gone ahead by two games with a win.
The Braves had other plans, though.
JSU could never really find a rhythm and never had an answer for guard Tamarcio Wilson, who scored a career-high 31 points to lead Alcorn State to a 72-64 victory in front of 3,099 fans at the Lee E. Williams AAC.
"This is a game you definitely don't want to lose. It's a rivalry game, playing on our home court," Tigers coach Wayne Brent said. "We went down there and beat them at their place. We knew they were going to come with their best game. This is a hard game to take because we didn't want to lose and we had a great crowd. Our crowd came out and this was a game we didn't want to give up."
