NORFOLK, Virginia --There were some opening-night jitters, and some key mistakes. At times, Old Dominion’s offense faltered, and the defense gave up some big plays.But in a game delayed a day by tropical storm Hermine, ODU gave its home fans something Sunday night they haven’t had for three years – the chance to cheer an old fashioned, blowout victory.
Showing no ill effects from knee surgery nine months ago, quarterback David Washington tossed four touchdown passes, and ODU's defense looked much improved, as the Monarchs pulled away in the second half to pummel Hampton, 54-21, at Foreman Field.
ODU last won by such a lopsided margin on Nov. 2, 2013, when the Monarchs downed Rhode Island, 66-14. It was the most points ODU has scored since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA.
The game was a critical test for Washington, who had surgery to repair two torn ligaments and meniscus in December. He had not been tackled live since being injured last November at Southern Mississippi.
