DES MOINES, Iowa – Yettra Specks and Paris Collins combined for 27 second half points to lead the Jackson State men’s basketball team to a 68-63 win over the Drake Bulldogs Saturday evening at the Knapp Center. With the win JSU improves to 3-6 and Drake falls to 1-8.
With 44 seconds left in the game Specks drained a long three to give JSU a 65-60 advantage. He knocked down three free throws in the final moments of the game to give JSU its first winning streak of the season.
Collins finished with 16 points on 6-13 shooting from the field and Specks scored 15 points. Javeres Brent and Derek Roscoe came off the bench to score in double-figures. Brent knocked down three three-point shots en route to scoring 12 points and Roscoe had 10. Janarius Middleton added five points, but had a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Tigers trailed 31-29 at halftime, but outscored the Bulldogs 39-32 in the second half. The Tigers shot 34% from the field, but held Drake to 27% shooting. JSU hit nine threes while Drake knocked down five. Second chance points (17-6) and bench scoring (24-13) helped JSU pick up its first road win of the season.
JSU looks to extend its winning streak to three games when the Tigers host Blue Mountain College at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center on Dec. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. JSU will make its final road swing of the non-conference portion of its schedule when the Tigers travel to Ft. Hood, Texas to play Baylor on Dec. 17 before traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face Duquesne on Dec. 19.
