Hampton University AD oversees an eventful year

HAMPTON, Virgina -- College athletic directors, at least those in a mid-level conference, are rarely as visible as the coaches they hire.

Eugene Marshall, on the other hand, was front and center as Hampton University had a busy year in the headlines.

It started last November when the Pirates announced that, after 22 years, they were leaving the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the Big South. That led to plenty of conversation, some accusing HU of ignoring its HBCU heritage.

Three weeks later, Marshall hired a new football coach — former East Carolina defensive coordinator Robert Prunty, whose résumé included time as a Power Five conference assistant. Then, in May, Marshall announced Hampton had signed a five-year deal with Under Armour.

A new conference, a new football coach and new head-to-toe apparel provider. All in a 24-week span, and all under Eugene Marshall’s watch.
