IU Men's Basketball Set To Open 119th Season on Tuesday With Chicago State

OPENING TIP
Indiana University begins its 119th season of competition in men's basketball. IU will open up the season against Chicago State of the Western Athletic Conference. The Hoosiers have played the Cougars three times and are 3-0. This will be the second time the two teams have opened the season against each other (2013-14). CSU was 3-29 last season.

THE COACHES
Indiana Coach Archie Miller begins his second season of guiding the Cream and Crimson.  Last year, the Hoosiers finished 16-15 and 9-9 in the Big Ten.  He is 155-78 in seven years as a head coach, which includes six years at the University of Dayton.  His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014.    Chicago native Lance Irvin was hired as head coach of the Chicago State men's basketball program on August 7, 2018 and is in his first season.



NEWS & NOTES
IU's recruiting class is ranked seventh in the country heading into the season. Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 10-member Preseason All-Big Ten team.  Both are among 50 players listed as candidates for the 2019 Naismith Trophy and Langford is among 20 players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list.  Morgan also is on the Karl Malone Watch List which is awarded to the top power forward in the country, and Langford is on the Jerry West Watch List presented annually to college basketball's top shooting guard. Langford was named third-team Preseason All-American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com.
 
TWO GAME EXHIBITION NOTES
In two exhibition games, IU shot 52.1 percent from the field and 41.0 percent from three-point range while averaging 83.0 points per game. 
 
They held opponents to 34.2 percent shooting, 30.2 percent on three-point attempts and 55.0 points per game.
 
IU forced 18 turnovers per game and averaged 10.5 steals.
 
The Hoosiers held a 43.0 to 31.5 edge off the glass.
 
Four players averaged double figure scoring including Langford (16.0), Morgan (12.5), sophomore Justin Smith (11.5) and freshman Rob Phinisee (10.5).
