MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors

NORFOLK, Virginia — Florida A&M junior Maria Yvette Garcia was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Brianna Lang was named Rookie of the Week, while Maryland Eastern Shore senior Koya Sowells earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Howard senior Tamia Dockery was named Setter of the Week.


Garcia (6-1, Jr., OH, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) recorded a dominant double-double in the Lady Rattlers’ four-set win over Bethune-Cookman this past Friday. She racked up 23 kills and 14 digs in the match, which gave her averages of 5.8 kills and 3.5 digs pet set for the contest. The win was FAMU’s fifth in a row, and it strengthened its hold on the Southern Division lead.

Lang (5-8, Fr., S, Atlanta, Ga.) averaged nearly 11.3 assists per contest for Coppin State this past weekend, as the Eagles got one step closer to clinching a MEAC Championship bid. After turning in a 32-assist performance in a three-set non-conference win over Fairleigh Dickinson, Lang racked up 47 assists, five kills and two service aces as Coppin State defeated rival Morgan State in four sets.

Sowells (5-4, Sr., DS, Missouri City, Texas) averaged almost five digs per set in two matches this past weekend, and she racked up 27 digs as the Lady Hawks handed Howard its first MEAC loss of the season on Sunday. She also had 12 assists for a double-double in that match, and she also had 12 digs in a three-set win over Norfolk State.

Lang (5-8, Sr., S, Richmond, Texas) averaged just over 11 assists per set in two matches for the Northern Division-leading Bison, and she had a double-double in Sunday’s five-set thriller against Maryland Eastern Shore – racking up 54 assists and 14 digs. She also had five kills and three service aces in that match. In Friday’s three-set win over Delaware State, Dockery had 35 assists and six digs.

Christa Johnson (CSU) had 11 kills against Morgan State, while also totaling seven blocks in two matches.

Ilayda Nurkan (FAMU) had 45 assists and eight digs against Bethune-Cookman.

Jurnee Tipton (HOW) had 12 kills and 13 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Kailyn Williams (HOW) had eight kills against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Fola Wilson (HOW) racked up 22 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore and 17 against Delaware State.

Lucia Babic (MDES) had 18 kills and 12 digs in a five-set win over Howard.

Ivana Blazevic (MDES) had 36 assists and 14 digs against Howard.

Monette Daniels (MSU) had 12 kills against Coppin State.

Zoe McBride (MSU) had 10 kills and nine digs against Coppin State.

Roi Wallace (MSU) racked up 39 assists against Coppin State.

Edie Brewer (NCAT) had 18 assists, nine kills and seven digs against Savannah State.

Andrea Laboy-Rivera (NCAT) had 13 digs against South Carolina State and 11 against Savannah State.

Morgan Goodwin (NCCU) had nine kills and four blocks against South Carolina State.

Erika Ianovale (NCCU) had 17 digs against Savannah State.

Isis Mitchell (NCCU) racked up 34 assists against Savannah State.

Whitney White (NCCU) had 12 kills and hit .636 against South Carolina State.

Brenna Ankrum (NSU) had 14 digs in a win over Delaware State.

Anna Rupertova (NSU) had 15 kills against Delaware State and 12 in a non-conference match against Hampton.
