NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Samuel Abdellatif and Taylor Priceled the way for their teams Friday in the UNO Opener cross country meet at Lake Oaks Park.
It was the first meet of the season for the XULA distance runners.
Abdellatif ran 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 25.4 seconds in his collegiate debut. It's the seventh-fastest time by a Gold Rush runner at that distance — records date to 2002 — and the second best by a freshman. He finished 17th overall in the race.
Price, a senior and a two-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference individual champion, ran 4,000 meters in 16:47.6. It's the fifth-fastest time by a Gold Nugget at that distance. Price placed 17th in the women's race.
Both XULA teams placed sixth in team scoring.
Also running for the Gold Rush were Ahmad Wilson (39th place, 18:33.3), Ghassan Alansi (42nd, 20:18.2), Devin Macklin-Jackson (43rd, 20:24.0) and Jordan Ashmore (44th, 21:11.8).
The Gold Nuggets' other runners were Ky'Reon McBride (31st, 20:17.3), Maliya Vaughan(33rd, 21:10.0), Alexis Milton (36th, 22:29.3) and Hajjia Mohammed (37th, 22.46.5).
The University of New Orleans men and the Tulane women won the team titles.
Next for the Rush and Nuggets will be the Allstate Sugar Bowl Festival at NOLA's City Park Sept. 14. The men's race will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women at 8:30. Both races will be 5Ks.
