Nuggets blast off with 3-set opening win vs. Mobile

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana ended a nine-match losing streak against Mobile with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 victory Friday in the Big Easy Blastoff volleyball tournament.
     

The Gold Nuggets' next match will start at 6 p.m. Friday against Indiana Tech.
     

Ema Causevic led XULA (6-3) with season highs of 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. The junior also had 11 digs, four blocks and two aces.
     

The Nuggets' Kayla Black produced her team-leading fifth double-double of the season — 11 kills and 12 digs. Black hit .320.
     

Vivica Price-Spraggins hit .538 with eight kills and two blocks for XULA. Maya Smith had five kills and six blocks, Si Si Mitchell had two aces and 12 digs, Eva Le Guillou had 39 assists and two aces, and Jaida Dowd had six kills.
     

Dowd had four kills to rally XULA from a 6-0 second-set deficit.
     

"I thought we served tough," XULA head coach Pat Kendrick said, "and our block defense was good."
     

Abigail Andrews and Rachel Hart had six kills apiece for the Rams (5-4), and Hart had three blocks.
     

"Xavier ran a good offense," Mobile head coach Jon Campbell said. "They had a nice quick tempo and were well balanced. They picked us apart."
     

XULA outhit Mobile .296 to .062 and produced advantages of 40-21 in assists, 4-1 in aces, 45-34 in digs and 8-4 in blocks.
     

XULA defeated Mobile for the first time since 2013. It was the Nuggets' first-ever three-set sweep of the Rams. Mobile leads the series 15-4.
