#2 FISK has offensive eruption to pull away from Oakwood

TOUGALOO, Miss. - An offensive eruption helped No. 2 Fisk pull away from No. 8 Oakwood for a quarterfinal win on Thursday at the 2023 Hope Credit Union Women’s Basketball Championship. 

The first half was tightly contested between the two opening round foes. The first quarter saw the teams separated only by four points, 

The second half was all the Lady Bulldogs, powered by 2023 GCAC Player of the Year senior Maya Buckhanon. Fisk dropped in 21 points in the third quarter, making the gap, 53-36. 

Oakwood attempted to close the gap in the final stanza, but it was too little too late as Fisk pushed for the 71-52 win.

 

Buckhanon, who was also tabbed Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, finished with a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead both teams in the categories. The Lady Ambassadors’ Trenisha Adams and Keiah Daney each posted 10 points in the effort. 

No. 2 Fisk will face the winner of #3 Philander Smith College and #6 Tougaloo College on Saturday, February 25 at 12 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Women’s Basketball Championship.
