No state of complacency: Morgan State Bears

Teams are pressing forward after successful 2007-08 seasons

"Yes, we had success, but last year is last year," said the Bears' Todd Bozeman, 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. "And while I appreciate [the award], it's not going to carry any weight this season." Morgan lost three key players but will bank on returning forward Marquise Kately (13.1 points per game) and guards Reggie Holmes (12.9) and Jermaine "Itchy" Bolden.

Kately, 6-5, is "the consummate team player," Bozeman said. "He rebounds, scores and covers for others on defense. Last year, he was even pressed to play point guard for two games." Morgan also corralled a handful of transfers who should help to put more distance between the Bears and their abysmal 2005-06 record of 4-26.

Though Morgan won the MEAC regular-season crown, it lost the tournament title game to Coppin State on a late basket by the Eagles' Tywain McKee. The Coppin star returns with an iffy supporting cast, but how can the Eagles top last year's wacky season in which they went 16-21 and still reached the play-in game of the NCAA tournament?

NSU defense scores 2 TDs, limits league’s top rusher in win

NORFOLK, VA - Morgan State might have the top-ranked defense in Division I-AA, but Norfolk State’s was better Saturday at Price Stadium. The Bears committed a season-high seven turnovers, and the Spartans dominated in a 35-9 rout. Don Carey, who picked off a pair of passes in front of a handful of NFL scouts in town to watch him, said the NSU defense got ticked off early and remained angry in holding the Bears to their fewest points this fall in a I-AA game.

“Rankings don’t mean a thing,” the Booker T. Washington High School graduate said. “The thing that got me is they tried to come out and jump on our logo. No matter who we’re playing, I’m always going to show respect.” Carey scored off his second pick, zooming 94 yards down the left sideline for the first touchdown of his career. That was NSU’s second defensive TD of the afternoon. Hasan Craig ran back Mario Melton’s fumble two plays before that.

Rattlers show their youth, but also show their future

Just before leaving Bragg Stadium during the third quarter, Eddie Jackson spoke a few words that he might be repeating a few times this week. Used to be that Jackson had to explain a lot about athletics at FAMU when he was sports information director. Somewhere someone would ask him what happened on FAMU's homecoming. "I think over the next couple years," Jackson said. "you're going to see a great Rattler football team."

Morgan State Bears offensive line could not be stopped by the Rattlers defense--even with the Bears 2nd and 3rd String QBs playing the majority of the second half, spoiling FAMU's Homecoming with a 13-10 victory.

Quite a few folks might have gone home with the same feeling, sir. Watching FAMU play from behind then falling 13-10 wasn't what the 16,205 fans came to see. They sure weren't expecting to see James Meade kick a 39-yard field goal then leave just 12 seconds for FAMU to do something. But it's what they got on a night when the youth of the Rattlers showed. They had their opportunities.

If only they could have stood up.

Rutgers gets much-needed victory; Morgan State gets $300,000

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Consider the $300,000 that the Rutgers football team paid Morgan State for Saturday's 38-0 drubbing a bargain.

Entering the day as one of only two schools from the BCS conferences without a win, the Scarlet Knights needed a victory in the worst way. They got one, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions and cruising by their Football Championship Subdivision foe at Rutgers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

If the win doesn't salve all their wounds from the 0-3 start, it builds confidence for a Rutgers team that begins Big East play at West Virginia next Saturday. Nothing cures a losing streak more than a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school. Counting Saturday's win, Rutgers has now outscored its MEAC competition, 153-7, over the past three seasons (Howard, Norfolk State and Morgan State).

Norfolk State didn't learn the lesson the first time, being on the losing end of a 0-59 score. The Spartans loved the exposure so much that they are scheduled for another beat down on Sept. 10, 2010. I guess its raising the profile, when Rutgers can talk about MEAC teams like this.

Rutgers football: Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley meets the media

With Morgan State (2-1) set to visit Rutgers on Saturday -- a Championship Subdivision School looking for its first-ever victory over a BCS opponent -- head coach Donald Hill-Eley met with the media on Monday to discuss the game and the prospects of an upset.

Here is what the sixth-year coach had to say:

Q. As fragile as Rutgers' psyche seems to be, is it important for your team to have some early success to have a chance?

Hill-Eley: As with any game, it's important to try to get some success early, moving the ball to get that confidence that we can compete with them.

Q. What type of matchup problems does your quarterback, Carlton Jackson, create with his athleticism and running ability?

No game here, folks...Rutgers by 55! The only suspense is will Morgan score 3. No need for wishful thinking, the MEAC and SWAC have proven they can't beat an average FCS/1-AA outside the MEAC. This is simply a paycheck game for the Bears. Just pray Hill-Eley makes a better showing than the Norfolk State Spartans that got shellacked 59-0 last season by the Scarlett Knights.

FAMU vs. Tennessee State is on nation-wide TV at 3:00 p.m. and the Rattlers will give the MEAC something to cheer about in this OVC-MEAC rivalry game before a packed house at the Atlanta Football Classic.

Defense lifts Morgan to win in home opener

Still hurting from its season-opening loss at Towson, Morgan State yesterday found the ideal elixir. A good, old-fashioned beat-down. The Bears opened their home schedule at Hughes Stadium by dominating an undermanned and overmatched North Carolina Central team, scoring 35 points off seven turnovers - including three interceptions returned for touchdowns - and recording their most lopsided victory in 22 years in a 49-7 nonconference win.

"The guys put it together and showed up as a team," said Morgan coach Donald Hill-Eley, who looked to exploit the tendency of Eagles quarterback Stradford Brown to throw on the run. "We practiced the scramble drill all week - just staying with our guys rather then leaving their man. It paid off." The victory was the fourth straight in a home opener for Morgan (1-1), which scored its most points since putting up 55 against Savannah State in 2005 and broke a school record with six interceptions.

Schaefer sets record in Towson Tigers' win over MSU Bears

Towson quarterback becomes school's all-time passing yardage leader in 21-16 victory over Morgan State

Sean Schaefer threw three touchdowns and became Towson's all-time passing yardage leader, and the Tigers rallied to beat Morgan State 21-16 Saturday night. Schaefer, who passed for 243 yards, broke the record of 8,900 career passing yards set by Dan Crowley (1991-94) on a 40-yard screen pass to Hakeem Moore with 3:50 remaining in the game.

MSU Bears running back Devan James hits a career high 178 yards on 33 carries at Towson.

Schaefer connected with Steve Holmes for a 12-yard touchdown to pull Towson (1-1) within two points in the third quarter. The record-breaking quarterback threw a 4-yard passing score to Marcus Lee to put the Tigers ahead for good with 1:59 left in the quarter. Devan James totaled a career-best 178 yards on 33 carries for Morgan State (0-1). The Tigers improved to 16-5 all-time against Morgan. Towson took a 7-0 lead on the game's first drive when Schaefer threw 55-yard touchdown to Casey Cegles.

Baltimore proving to be Bears’ den - Morgan State eyes Mid Eastern Athletic Conference

BALTIMORE - Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley doesn’t have to continually remind his players of their goal of winning a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title any more — they do it for him. “Before you had to sell them on the fact that they didn’t want to be part of a losing tradition and they just wanted to be competitive,” Hill-Eley said. “I hear them talking about championships, but I see them doing extra laps, I see them putting in extra time in the weight room.”

MSU Bears returns eight starters from a defense that ranked second overall in the Football Championship Subdivision (1-AA)(photo by Mark's Digital Photography).

The Bears, coming off of consecutive 5-6 seasons, have their sights set on a MEAC title and automatic berth in the 16-team Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Morgan State’s six losses last season, were by an average of 6.5 points, with none by more than eight.

Offensively, the Bears must replace Chad Simpson, the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year last season. The leading candidate to fill the void left by Simpson, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent, is redshirt sophomore Devan James, who rushed 418 yards and two touchdowns on 85 carries last season.

MEAC season's recipe: 'Thicker' on top

Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley has the Bears in contention for the MEAC championship (Mark's Digital Photography)

NORFOLK - — South Carolina State is the favorite to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football title. That is, if you believe the ballots cast by conference coaches and sports information directors, announced Friday during the league's media day.

Thing is, virtually no one on hand took the results seriously, South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough included. Sure, the Bulldogs were on the lips of every player or coach willing to discuss the league race. Then again, so were Delaware State and Norfolk State and Hampton and Morgan State.

Joe Taylor earned so much respect for guiding Hampton to three consecutive titles (2004-06) that some on hand were speculating he could win another in his first season at Florida A&M.

Morgan State's Coly decides to go pro

Photo: NBA draft prospect Boubacar Coly.

Boubacar Coly, Morgan State's 6-foot-9 defensive enforcer, will forgo his last year of NCAA eligibility to pursue a pro basketball career, Bears coach Todd Bozeman said this week. Coly, who played this season as a 24-year-old graduate student, leaves as reigning Defensive Player of the Year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He led the MEAC in rebounds (10.9 per game) and blocked shots (84).

A native of Senegal, Coly transferred from Xavier University, where he played in only a handful of games while undergoing two knee surgeries. He earned a degree in mass communication there, and that enabled him to play his first season at Morgan in 2006-07.

Morgan State and Alabama State receives no consolation prize in NIT

We are now beginning to wonder why each HBCU program that makes an NCAA or NIT field is nearly always ranked the last seed. This is a head scratch-er for Morgan State University that received an NIT berth as the number eight seed to travel to number one seed Virginia Tech to play the Hokies on March 19, 7 p.m. The Hokies are 19-12 and Morgan State 21-10.

The game will be televised on ESPN Classic for those with cable systems and satellite dishes that receive the channel.

Alabama State University has a more difficult road to travel going to Arizona State University, a number one seed with a 19-12 record. The 20-10 Hornets has to regroup fast for this March 18, 11 p.m. contest that is scheduled for television on ESPN2. Arizona State is purported to be the best team that did not make the NCAA Tournament.

Should we count our blessings that these two HBCU teams made the field of 32 for the NIT Tournament, or grumble that the deck is stacked against them with road games for the entire duration of the tournament, even if they win?

Well, there is always a chance of an upset and we wouldn't dismiss Morgan State and Alabama State, just yet. They are both capable of winning.

The Morgan Lacrosse Story: Independent Documentary Film

Photo: Morgan State University's 1975 Lacrosse Team -'Ten Bears'

INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY FOR PBS: 'THE MORGAN LACROSSE STORY'

View Movie Trailer for The Morgan Lacrosse Story: Click on Blog Title Above.

The Morgan Lacrosse Story, is slated to air nationally on PBS April 4th at 10 pm. The film chronicles the rise of the country’s first and only college lacrosse team at a historically black university--Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland. Producer: Luke David

The Morgan Lacrosse Story will be screened at the Morgan State University Murphy Fine Arts Center at 7 pm on March 11, 2008. It begins airing on public television on April 4th at 10:00 PM. Contact your local PBS station to find out when it will be aired locally.

This Documentary Brings Alive the Legacy of the First and Only College Lacrosse Team at a Historically Black Institution in the 1970's.

WASHINGTON, DC - College lacrosse was at the center of a significant storm in the early 1970's, a riveting story that is coming into full view for the first time on television with The Morgan Lacrosse Story, a new documentary film for PBS. An accounting of the first and only college lacrosse team at a prestigious and historically black institution, Baltimore's Morgan State University.

When a young white administrator reluctantly accepted the position of head lacrosse coach at Baltimore’s Morgan State University, a six-year journey culminating in a shocking upset began. The Bears’ solidarity and determination to succeed changed the sport of lacrosse forever, even as they played in a racially charged period in our nation’s history — the early 1970s.

An emotionally-charged film that deals with issues of race and class during the Civil Rights Era, The Morgan Lacrosse Story uses the official team sport of Maryland as a vehicle to tackle complicated issues, and to honor the legacy of a groundbreaking team who would eventually pull off one of the greatest upsets in intercollegiate sports history.

By introducing viewers to the courageous individuals who made this important part of history and allowing them to tell their stories directly, this highly dynamic one hour documentary film connects the audience to the real emotions of their experience.

The Morgan Lacrosse Story was produced and directed by Luke David, a Producer/Editor at TEAM Sound & Vision. David felt a responsibility to make the documentary after being deeply inspired by the book Ten Bears, co-written by Chip Silverman, the team's coach, and Miles Harrison Jr. "It's rare to get the chance to work on something that you want to be a part of, a legacy worth preserving," David says. "Once I became aware of this story, there was no way I was going to let it go, or leave it in someone else's hands.

"With the archival resources that Chip had available, we knew we had to get things moving right away while everything was still intact. The real hook came once I started meeting the players and I realized how compelling they were as individual characters, let alone the civil rights backdrop of what they accomplished."

Edited by David and TEAM Sound & Vision editor Ian Rummer, with audio mixing performed by TEAM Sound Designer/Mixer Scott Rhame, The Morgan Lacrosse Story is set in Baltimore, but the themes contained within quickly reveal themselves to be universal. The events of the team's formation and rise to prominence are re-told by the players themselves, and examined in historical context by thoughtful and informed narration by Wendell Pierce from HBO's "The Wire".

In addition, hundreds of photographs from the collections of Silverman and his players have been gathered for the film, as well as newspaper clippings from almost every game they played.

Through the prism of a sport infused with the spirituality of its Native American roots, The Morgan Lacrosse Story, made possible by the creative inspiration of TEAM Sound & Vision and the generous support of Constellation Energy, the parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric shows how this determined group harnessed the power of the game to change the college landscape forever.

"This is a positive story," Luke David concludes. "So many stories about race relations have a sour ending or feel hopeless, but here there's a resolution and a spiritual element. I hope people take the time to watch it, absorb the material and realize that things aren't always as inclusive as we think they are, but with courage things can be different and better."

Coppin State Lady Eagles cage Morgan State 71-58

Photo: 6-3 Junior Center Whitney Cunningham is proving to be an offensive and defensive force for the Eagles.

BALTIMORE -- Whitney Cunningham scored a career-high 21 points and Coppin State extended its winning streak to eight straight with a 71-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State in both teams regular-season finale at Hill Field House.

The Eagles, who have won 13 of their last 14 games, had already secured the second seed in the upcoming MEAC Tournament but had plenty to play for entering the contest. Coppin State snapped a two-game losing streak to the Bears and moved to within a game of posting its fourth straight 20-win season.

Coppin State (19-11, 13-3 MEAC) overcame a season-high 30 turnovers by out-rebounding the Bears 51-41 and holding them to 28.8 percent shooting.

With the school's first regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament locked up, Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman could have been forgiven if he wanted to give his starters a breather last night. But when the opponent is Coppin State, and with city bragging rights on the line, the Forestville native knew that taking this game lightly was not an option.

Despite being without leading scorer Jamar Smith (foot injury), the Bears took the Eagles' best shots and still came away with a hard-fought 68-64 victory on Senior Night before an announced 4,500 last night at Hill Field House.
