Howard Softball Trades Wins with With Coppin State

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Howard softball team traded wins with Coppin State in their Sunday doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, April 9, but were postponed due to threat of bad weather. The Lady Bison (11-21, 2-3 MEAC) dropped the first game to Eagles (8-10, 2-3 MEAC), 5-3 in eight innings of play, but conquered their conference opponent in the second, 3-1.

Centerfielder Lorae Robinson led the Bison at the plate, hitting .750 and recorded HU’s first RBI of the game on an infield single to shortstop in the top of the second.

Howard scattered five additional hits in the third through fifth innings, but didn’t post any additional runs until the sixth where they dished out their final two runs of the game on a trio of hits. Robinson singled to right, advancing Trina Kindred to third who made it on base on an infield single to shortstop earlier in the inning. Emily Johnson secured the game for the Bison and fired a triple to right field with two outs, bringing home two insurance runs.

The triple was Johnson’s second of the season, and inched herself one RBI behind Rebecca Kirshner in most runs batted in on the team this season with 14.

Overall the Lady Bison outhit the Eagles 14-7 in game two. Carly Martin pitched the entire game and recorded four strikeouts and one walk.

Unlike the second game, Howard was unable to shutout the Lady Eagles for six straight innings, instead the game remained scoreless on both sides until the fourth inning where HU broke the stalemate with two runs. Kirshner opened the inning with a single and scored on the next at bat where Christine Sborz delivered a double to left centerfield. Sborz went on the score HU’s second run following an Eagles fielding error.

Howard maintained their 2-0 lead until the sixth inning where Coppin State scored a run on two hits. Johnson was brought to the mound to take over for Samantha Gatson who struck out five, walked one and allowed one run on four hits. CSU would tie the game on an unearned run.

In the eighth the Lady Bison regained the lead after Kirshner tallied a monumental RBI single. The game unraveled for HU during Coppin State’s final at bat as the tying run scored on two back-to-back illegal pitches and the winning run was brought home on a two-run homer.

Johnson gave up three runs on four hits and struck out a batter during her time in the circle. The Lady Bison softball team will break until April 30 where they will play Morgan State in Washington, D.C. and then Maryland Eastern Shore on May 7 for their final games of the regular season. The MEAC Tournament will take place in Daytona, Fla. beginning May 12.

North Carolina A&T Aggies earn MEAC title with win at Coppin State

Coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs has lead the Aggies to their third straight MEAC regular-season crown.

BALTIMORE, MD -- Senior guard TaWuana "Tweet" Cook scored a career-high 33 points as N.C. A&T overpowered Coppin State 72-53 on Saturday to clinch the MEAC regular-season women's basketball crown for the third consecutive season. The Aggies also won three straight regular-season titles from 1987-1990. "I know people picked us to win it, but we were hearing a lot through the grapevine that people thought we were vulnerable," said Patricia Cage-Bibbs, A&T's coach. "People really didn't believe we could pull this off because we didn't have our big guns coming back.

"I treasure all three titles, but I appreciate this one a little more because we've gone through a lot as a team this year. But the ladies hung tough and we got it done." The Aggies (20-8, 13-1) will open the MEAC tournament as the No. 1 seed March 10 when they face the No. 8 or No. 9 seed at 12:30 p.m. at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.

Morgan State 61, Coppin State 50

Senior guard Corin Adams hit five three pointers (career high) and 25 points for the Lady Bears in their victory over the Lady Eagles.

BALTIMORE, Md. --Corin Adams scored a game-high 25 points and Brittany Noel came off the bench and added a career-high 14 points to help visiting Morgan State to a 61-50 victory over cross-town rival Coppin State on Saturday afternoon in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State. The 11-point victory for Morgan State is its largest margin of victory over Coppin State in 11 years, since a 76-53 win over the Eagles on March 4, 1999 in a MEAC Tournament quarterfinal game in Richmond, Va. It is also Morgan’s largest regular season road win at Coppin since an eight-point (63-55) victory at the Coppin Center on Jan. 5, 2008.

With the win, Morgan State (4-8, 1-0 MEAC) put an end to its season-long five-game losing skid, which it had to close out the 2009. The victory was also the Lady Bears’ third consecutive MEAC opening win against the Eagles and spoiled Coppin’s first conference opener in its new facility. Adams, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, shot 9-of-21 from the field, including a game- and career-high five three-pointers (5-of-10) for Morgan State, which has now won three of the last five meetings over its city and league rivals. Adams also added five rebounds, a team-high five assists and recorded a game-high two of Morgan State’s three blocks.

BALTIMORE, MD - Morgan State’s Erin Hawkins hit a three-pointer from the right elbow with 1:10 left in the game, which proved to be the game winner, as the host Lady Bears defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 56-53 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon. The victory ended a two-game losing skid for the Lady Bears (9-3, 1-0 MEAC), who earned their third win in the last four meetings over the Coppin State, while improving to 5-1 at home this season. Morgan’s win, also put an end to Coppin State’s eight-game winning streak on Morgan’s home floor.

For Coppin State (1-10, 0-1 MEAC), the loss overshadowed a rebounding clinic by the Lady Eagles. Whitney Cunningham finished with a career- and game-high 24 rebounds and added a team-high 14 points for the Lady Eagles. Behind Cunningham’s effort, Coppin State held a 60-26 rebounding advantage over Morgan State.

Hawkins, who finished with 14 points, all in the second half, shot 5-of-10, including 4-for-8 from three-point range. Her game winning three-pointer was part of a 6-0 run in which she hit back-to-back treys to help the Lady Bears overcome a 53-50 deficit for the win.

Morgan State stayed in the game by forcing 27 Coppin State turnovers. Moneshia Davis tallied a career- and game-high four steals, while Corin Adams, who led Morgan with a game-high 21 points added three steals. Adams also finished with a game-high six assists.

Coppin State Lady Eagles reloads with Endia Word

CHATHAM, Virginia — Chatham’s Endia Word has found her new family. A day after teammate Kelly Montgomery committed to Gardner-Webb University to play softball, the second of the Cavaliers’ five senior basketball players put pen to paper on Wednesday. Word signed a full scholarship to play basketball for Coppin State University in Baltimore.

The 6-foot-2 center averaged 11 points and eight rebounds per game and blocked 41 shots for Chatham in 2007-08. And now she takes her size and low post ability to the Eagles (23-12), who were knocked out of the first round of the NCAA tournament last month by Maryland. “I am elated,” Word said. “This has pretty much been all excitement for me.”

Suber, Coppin earn return trip to NCAA tourney

RALEIGH, N.C. - Rashida Suber saved Coppin State not once, but twice in the final 22 seconds yesterday.

Moments after the senior barely avoided a five-second violation on an inbounds play with a crucial timeout, Suber came out of a scramble at midcourt with the ball, leading to a game-winning, belief-defying scoop shot that beat North Carolina A&T, 72-70, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's championship game.

Just like that, Coppin escaped overtime and went from crying to, well, crying. "They were tears of joy," Suber said, a black MEAC championship hat adorning her head, after she delivered Coppin (22-11) to the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years.

Coppin State streaks past Lady Bulldogs to Semifinals

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Rashida Suber scored 24 points and Coppin State advanced to the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament with a 64-51 victory over South Carolina State at the RBC Center. Coppin State (20-11) won its ninth straight game by limiting South Carolina State to 27.9 percent shooting.

It marked the 19th consecutive game in which the Eagles held an opponent below 40 percent shooting for the game. Marie Reid led South Carolina State (13-17) with 15 points, while Brittany Baity added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Eagles also received 15 points from Shalamar Oakley and 10 points from Danielle Anders.

Coppin State Lady Eagles cage Morgan State 71-58

BALTIMORE -- Whitney Cunningham scored a career-high 21 points and Coppin State extended its winning streak to eight straight with a 71-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State in both teams regular-season finale at Hill Field House.

The Eagles, who have won 13 of their last 14 games, had already secured the second seed in the upcoming MEAC Tournament but had plenty to play for entering the contest. Coppin State snapped a two-game losing streak to the Bears and moved to within a game of posting its fourth straight 20-win season.

Coppin State (19-11, 13-3 MEAC) overcame a season-high 30 turnovers by out-rebounding the Bears 51-41 and holding them to 28.8 percent shooting.

Morgan State Lady Bears ends Coppin streak

Morgan State ended Coppin State's 41-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season winning streak with a 63-55 victory yesterday. Corin Adams led the visiting Bears (7-5, 1-0) with a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. The game was the first MEAC loss for the Eagles (5-9, 0-1) since a 51-50 setback to Delaware State in 2005.

Rashida Suber had 13 points in defeat for Coppin.
