California, Pennsylvania -- Calvin Brown sank two free throws with seven seconds left to give Virginia Union an 82-81 victory over Clarion in the opening round of the PSAC/CIAA Challenge at California, Pennsylvania Friday.
The challenge pits schools of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference against the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) had just taken the lead 81-80 when Quintus "Bud" Teers sank two free throws of his own with 24 seconds remaining in a seesaw contest. However, teammate Paul McQueen fouled Brown as he tried to muscle up a shot at the other end of the court.
Clarion's Calvin Edward missed a jumper with two seconds left and time ran out before anyone could get to the rebound. Brown finished with 22 points for the Panthers (1-0), who gave new head coach Lugman Jabeer his first win.
