WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Bethune-Cookman moved on, but it wasn't easy. The Wildcats let a big lead slip away but did enough down the stretch to beat N.C. Central 60-59 in an MEAC tournament quarterfinal Thursday night at Joel Coliseum.
With the largest crowd of the week on hand — about 4,500 — the Wildcats had a 15-point lead in the first half and led by as many as 13 early in the second half. But the hard-charging Eagles, playing in their first MEAC tournament since 1980, nearly came all the way back.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats (17-16) advanced to the semifinals and will take on eighth-seeded Hampton, the defending champion, today at 6 p.m.
N.C. Central had forged ahead 59-58 and was clinging to that lead when Dominique Sutton made a move to the basket with 19 seconds left.
