FVSU women roll into playoffs

FORT VALLEY, Georgia - Lonnie Bartley was almost ready than to panic. “I really thought we had a good basketball team,” the longtime women’s basketball head coach at Fort Valley State said. “I really thought we had a basketball team that might lose two games all year.”

FVSU opened the season with a 17-point loss at home. A week later, in a chance to make statement against a team from a stronger conference, the Lady Wildcats went down 84-51 at Columbus State. Bartley was worried.

A day later, the Lady Wildcats handed 6-0 Georgia Southwestern its first loss of the season. And then, as it has done nearly every year since Bartley took over, FVSU got rolling.

“That gave us the confidence we needed,” Bartley said of the Georgia Southwestern win. “We do have a good team, but I had to convince them that we’ve got a good team.”
