WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Tonia Walker, the associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Winston-Salem State University, has been named the acting director of athletics, replacing Bill Hayes.
Coaches were told of the move at a short meeting Monday, according to a person close to the athletics department who had knowledge of the change but asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the move.
Another person close to the athletics department, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Walker, not Hayes, attended the CIAA basketball tournament luncheon at the Charlotte Convention Center on Monday. Athletics directors generally attend the luncheon, at which All-CIAA basketball players are honored.
