BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Southern hits the road one more time against an FBS team, making the trip to New Orleans for a nonconference game against Tulane.
First-year Green Wave coach Willie Fritz is still looking for his first win after his team was held to a field goal in a 7-3 loss Thursday at Wake Forest. Tulane had just 280 yards of offense.
Fritz has had success everywhere he has been, but he has a difficult rebuild ahead of him with a Tulane team that has just one winning record in its past 13 seasons.
The Jaguars lost 38-21 on opening weekend, but they hung tough with Louisiana-Monroe. They trailed by two points at halftime, and it was a 10-point game midway through the fourth quarter.
They were maybe two or three big plays away from contending for a win — both in plays they missed out on and plays they gave up. They did a fairly good job bottling up the ULM passing game but were gashed for too many big plays on the ground. When Southern had the ball, it wasn’t able to connect on any momentum-swinging plays, though it had opportunities.
