Southern notebook: Willie Quinn breaks Southern receiving record ... with help from stat correction

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Willie Quinn tied Michael Hayes for Southern’s all-time receptions lead with a 13-yard catch in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Then he broke the record before he made another catch.

Quinn wasn't credited with a catch he made the previous week against Jackson State, when the official scorer credited reserve running back Tevin Horton with a 29-yard catch on the second play of the game. Quinn was the player who actually made the catch.

The error was not fixed until midway through Saturday's game against UAPB, after Quinn had already tied the record and before he made another catch.

The Miami native was awarded a game ball, which was pulled after he recorded what would’ve been the record-setting catch. He said he was going to get the ball signed by Dray Joseph, Austin Howard and Deonte Shorts, the three quarterbacks who have thrown him a pass at Southern.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was a little kid, to break records,” Quinn said. “Now I’m at the college level doing it. It’s just a blessing.”
