Tallahassee, Florida -- Coach Joe Taylor took responsibility Monday for the stunning loss that his Florida A&M football team suffered during homecoming on Saturday, while saying that his players have to recommit themselves if they want to finish the season with a winning record.
"I'm taking full blame because once they're on the field, I'm saying that they are the right ones," Taylor said. "I put them out there because through evaluation, written test, practice they're showing us that they can do it."
Taylor also responded to criticism of his coaching, which has become a social network talking point. Some even called for his termination in the face of the fact that FAMU (3-3, 2-2) is teetering with the possibility of not having a shot at the MEAC title.

FAMU's Terry Johnson glad to be back on field
Tallahassee, FL - Terry Johnson experienced joy and pain all during his first day on the Florida A&M practice field.
The day started joyfully because he was starting his college football career. But a few plays into his first practice, things turned painfully sad enough to bring tears to his eyes. Johnson twisted his knee while backpedaling into position to make a play.
It was his last time on the field until this past spring after having to undergo surgery.
"That really tore me apart because I really wanted to play my first year," said Johnson, a highly touted two-sport athlete out of Rickards High School, where he also starred on the basketball team. "Then, again, everything happens for a reason."

Hampton Pirates vs. Florida A&M Rattlers Football Game Moved
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team’s contest against Florida A&M at Armstrong Stadium will be played on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.The contest, the Pirates’ first MEAC game of the season and Joe Taylor’s second trip to Hampton as coach of the Rattlers, had been originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.

Ticket sales on rise at FAMU
Tallahassee, FL - Winning a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in football and the hiring of Clemon Johnson to coach the men's basketball team are paying dividends at the box office for Florida A&M.
But just how much isn't clear, although FAMU's ticket manager confirmed through the school's sports information office that ticket sales for both sports are ahead of where they were this time a year ago. Logistical issues with purchases through Ticketmaster made it difficult to get an accurate count, said interim sports information director Vaughn Wilson.
FAMU's athletic department is making a steady push to keep the momentum going, said athletic director Derek Horne. "Trying to cultivate that enthusiasm is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week opportunity," he said.

FAMU Football Keeps Fit in the Summer
Tallahassee, FL -- 58 days until FAMU opens its season against Fort Valley State and the Rattlers are staying as fit as they can in the summer months.
"Last year at this junction we had 12 athletes here," says director of Strength and Conditioning for FAMU Russell Barbarino. "This year for the first summer session we had 42 guys here. Now that the summer session two has started we have about 75 to 80 athletes because that includes some of the freshmen that are coming on campus."
"They are empowering each other," adds Joe Taylor. "They are there in the numbers."
Four days a week players are lifting and conditioning under their own free will. These workouts are voluntary as coaches can not instruct their players until practice begins.

Former FAMU, Jaguars QB highlights Rattlers football camp
Tallahassee, FL - Quinn Gray won't be surprised if he is asked by participants in next week's football camp at Florida A&M about how he almost brought the Jacksonville Jaguars back from an 18-point deficit when he played his first regular-season NFL game against the Tennessee Titans in the 2005 season finale.
Gray, who was named the Rattlers' quarterbacks coach in the spring, would more than likely oblige with some explanation of his 100-yards, two-touchdown passing performance.
But it won't be all that the aspiring football players will hear from Gray and the other coaches participating in coach Joe Taylor's first camp since he became head coach at FAMU almost four years ago.

Former Florida A&M Rattlers star preparing for NFL camp
Tallahassee, FL - Curtis Holcomb didn't waste a minute after walking into the Success Athletic Training building. The former Florida A&M cornerback swirled his outstretched arms at shoulder height a few times and dove right into a rigid workout. He worked his way around a variation of weights and at a non-stop pace, then went on to knock out almost 100 push-ups.
As the 250th pick by the San Francisco 49ers in this year's draft, Holcomb knows that little is guaranteed. The current NFL lockout brings on a certain level of anxiety, too.
"I'm working hard every day, but I've got to keep that mindset that I'm working harder than the next person," said Holcomb, the first FAMU football player to be drafted since quarterback JaJuan Seider in 2000. "But, then again, I want to work hard because it gives me motivation."

FAMU's Taylor fielding calls from prospects
Tallahassee, FL -- Joe Taylor has received more than a few telephone calls in the past month. They come from throughout the Southeast and other parts of the country from players, parents and alumni who try to convince the Florida A&M football coach that they've got his next super athlete."It's been crazy in terms of the number of calls that we've received," Taylor said Thursday. "Then, you have alumni calling because they know somebody."
The current dead recruiting period hasn't stopped Taylor's phone from ringing, in part, because of the program's success last season when the Rattlers won a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title. Taylor estimated that he's fielded at least 10 calls per day for the past month.
"I told the coaches this morning that it's a good thing that people want to be a part of you," he said. "When you do great things, you're going to attract more people. Winning (a share of the MEAC) championship didn't hurt either so what that allows us to do is be more selective."

Florida Classic to stay in Orlando through 2015
ORLANDO, FL -- Bethune-Cookman University President Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed and Florida A&M University President Dr. James H. Ammons, in concert with the Florida Classic Consortium, announced today that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida has signed on to become the title sponsor for the annual football game between the two schools, as well as title sponsor of Battle of the Bands. The Consortium has also agreed to an extension with Florida Citrus Sports that will keep the game at Orlando’s Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium for the next five years.
The agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida is for three years with an option to renew in years four and five. During that term, the game will be known as the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Florida Classic, while the Battle will now be called Florida Blue Battle of the Bands.

The Florida Classic began in 1978 and has spent the last 17 years in Orlando. Since its move to Orlando in 1997, this annual clash between these two Historical Black Colleges and Universities has averaged more than 66,000 at the Citrus Bowl. The game has been a regular on national television -- the ESPN network of stations since 2005.
Due in large part to these strong attendance numbers and the number of people traveling to Orlando for the week leading up to the game, the Florida Classic generated an estimated $31 million in economic impact for Central Florida last year.

Florida A&M track and field team gets boost from Rattlers' football players
Brian Tyms wanted to be a better basketball player in high school, so he ran track at Fort Lauderdale's Dillard High School. Hundreds of miles away, Jeremy Tillman figured that being on the Brandon High School track team would improve his football game.
Both Tyms and Tillman are now wide receivers on the Florida A&M football team, and not surprisingly, they're on the Rattlers' track and field team as well. Obviously, they want the cardiovascular advantage that running and jumping gives them, but their reason for being on the team runs a little deeper.
They're there because of pride and a desire to help the Rattlers to at least a top-five finish at this weekend's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Tillman's specialty is the sprints, and Tyms competes in the high jump.

NFL 49ers Draft Florida A&M's Cornerback Curtis Holcomb -- Confident He Is A Complete Player!

In looking over the newest 49ers conference call transcript (posted after the jump), it is safe to say Curtis Holcomb does not lack that confidence. Holcomb was the 49ers last pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, coming off the board at 250th overall. You could argue he finds himself in a similar situation to that of Phillip Adams (South Carolina State University) who was also a seventh round defensive back selection. While Holcomb and Adams are different players, Holcomb will follow him in the sense of trying to battle for what could be one of the final roster spots.
In fact, Holcomb and Adams likely will be battling each other for that spot. Adams has the advantage of a year under his belt in the NFL, but he also is dealing with recovery from his season-ending ankle injury. It's never too early to start considering roster and positional battles, and it is safe to say this will be one of those battles whenever football starts back up.

FAMU's Joe Taylor to be roasted, toasted
Tallahassee, FL - Joe Taylor will have a bit of an uneasy feeling for the next three weeks that has absolutely nothing to do with his football team at Florida A&M.What he'll be feeling comes from the fact some of his friends, family and just ordinary folks have planned to come together to roast and toast him.
"There is a little anxiety there because you really don't know," Taylor said Monday. "I hope it's more of a toast than a roast."
The event is scheduled for May 14 at the TCC Center for Workforce Development. It's being promoted by the Rattlers Special Edition, a fan-based organization that has traveled to out-of-town games each season for more than two decades.

Gray returns to Florida A&M to coach QBs
Tallahassee, FL - Assistant coach Steven Jerry stood a few feet from the Florida A&M quarterback unit. He didn't say much to them. Quinn Gray did most of the talking and the three quarterbacks were obviously zoned in. That was about three weeks ago, before Gray officially became quarterbacks coach for the Rattlers.
On Monday, Gray became the second former Rattlers player on coach Joe Taylor's staff with a fulltime job, joining defensive coordinator Earl Holmes. Like Holmes, Gray played in the NFL after leaving FAMU.
Gray returns as part of Taylor's staff restructures following the departure of Tim Edwards, who worked with Holmes as defensive coordinator, and tight end coach Edwin Pata. As part of the change, Taylor took the load of quarterbacks and receivers coaching off Jerry, leaving him as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

McCloughen FAMU's do-everything man
Naysayers told him he couldn't play football at the college level. He's defied that by becoming essentially a utility player on the Florida A&M football team.Then, a teammate dared Kory McCloughen to let his hair grow out. That was 20 months ago. McCloughen wasn't sure he'd let his hair grow that long, but he got a little inspiration one day when he was taking a walk through a local mall. He saw a young child who had lost all of his hair because of treatment for leukemia and decided then that he'd do what he could to help.
McCloughen decided to let his hair grow as long as it could by the end of the upcoming season. Then he will donate it to the Leukemia Foundation for making a wig for a patient. His curly blonde hair is at least three inches longer than shoulder length. The cause is worth every inch his hair grows, McCloughen said.
FAMU's Hollinghead to move to defensive end
Coming into spring practice, Nicolas Hollinghead wasn't totally surprised that he was the one called on to fill the void at defensive end for the Florida A&M football team.
Last summer, he was put on notice in a brief conversation with coach Joe Taylor, Hollinghead recalled Monday. So now that Marquiste Ramos and Kendrick Washington have used up their eligibility, Hollinghead is proving he is the one to beat for the position.

FAMU Green Team Dominates Orange in Scrimmage
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Apr. 2) - The FAMU Rattlers Football Team put on their annual Orange & Green Game today in Bragg Memorial Stadium. Thousands of fans showed up for the preview of who would be the stars of the upcoming season. Coming off a season that ended on a six game winning streak and a share of the MEAC championship, fans were anxious to see where this team stood.
The green team won the scrimmage 40-0, as several first and second string players on both offense and defense were on the green team. Players looking to earn a role on the Rattlers' 2011 squad were on the orange team.
Austin Trainor clearly led the Rattler offense to its best success. Trainor passed for 129 yards, hitting on 12 of 21 attempts, and had one interception. Showing an uncharacteristic fleet-footedness, Trainor rushed for 51 yards and caught one pass for 11 yards.

FAMU's Scott preaches his sermon
LLOYD, FL — After he'd been on the pulpit at Mount Zion AME Church for about 10 minutes, sweat began to roll down Padric Scott's face.

The questions will come in the form of plays from coach Joe Taylor and his staff. The players will have to respond by executing on the field. "I've told them that all of them will be evaluated and we'd have it on film," Taylor said.
The attraction, of course, will be the quarterback matchup between designated starter Austin Trainor and Memphis transfer Tyler Bass. They will go head-to-head in the first quarter, with Trainor starting for the Green team, while Bass will be the one under center for the Orange team.

FAMU launched new website - www.famuathletics.com
Florida A&M athletics took off into cyberspace Thursday night with a new website that not only promotes sports but also creates an avenue for advertisers to support the university.
One of the main attraction on the site will be streaming video of live sports events, primarily football, baseball, basketball and softball games. Fans also will have access to videos that feature some of its former greats, including football coach Jake Gaither and Olympian Bob Hayes.
Interim sports information director Vaughn Wilson said those will be added to the site in about three weeks.
"One thing that had frustrated some of alumni and fans from afar is not having a platform that gives them a FAMU experience," Wilson said. "We are going to give them a snapshot of everything that's going on in the athletic department through this website."

FAMU's Ethridge making strides at tight end
During a drill with receivers Thursday afternoon, the ball was being thrown everywhere — long, short and laterally. One of the short passes went to tight end Michael Ethridge. He made the catch and he looked more experienced than a sophomore doing so. He even plowed his way to a few extra yards after the catch.
"The attitude I have is that I have to catch every pass that comes to me; good pass, bad pass, I have to catch it," Ethridge said afterward. Then a few passes later, the maturity of the Godby High School graduate was tested. The ball was thrown around his ankles. He grappled with it for a few seconds before losing control.
