NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Jessica Green tied her career high with 17 points as the five-game win streak of Central Michigan ended in the 77-51 loss to Hampton, during the first round of the Tulane Double Tree Holiday Tournament.


The Chippewas (7-6) never led in the game as the Lady Pirates (9-2) began the game on a 10-2 lead. CMU battled back and tied the game at 12 with 13:46 left in the first half. Hampton stiffened up its defense and used a 10-2 run to retake the lead at 22-14 at the 10:55 point. The Maroon and Gold were held without a bucket for over five minutes, as Hampton reeled off a 16-3 run, until Green hit a waning-second layup to put CMU down 45-29 at the half.

 This is the first game since Purdue that the Chippewas trailed at half-time, and the most they have trailed at the break this year.

 

The Lady Pirates opened their lead, 58-31, in the second half behind a 13-2 run four minutes in. That would be it for the Chippewas as the Lady Pirates built upon their lead to claim their ninth win of the year.



For the first time all season Crystal Bradford was held under double digits only scoring six poi nts, but grabbing 11 rebounds. Skylar Miller added eight points going three-for-four from the floor.

The Chippewas were out-rebounded 44-38 and 21-11 offensively. They tied their season high 28 turnovers, which resulted into 31 Lady Pirate points. The CMU bench chipped in scoring 37 out of the total 51 points.

The Maroon and Gold will play Thursday at 6 p.m. CT against the College of Charleston, who lost 57-42 to Tulane.  Hampton will play for the tournament's championship against Tulane.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team issued a dominating performance on Wednesday night, upending Central Michigan 77-51 at the Fogelman Arena in the opening night of Tulane/DoubleTree Classic. 

The Lady Pirates (9-2) have won two straight and seven of their last eight games. Hampton will take  on tournament host Tulane on Thursday at 9 p.m. EST in the tournament’s championship game.


Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the way with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 16 points and a team-high seven assists. Sophomore forward Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) poured in 11 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Lady Pirates took control immediately, jumping out to a 10-2 lead after a fast-break jumper from Jenkins at the 16:18 mark. Central Michigan answered with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 12-12 after a Jessica Green layup at the 13:46 mark, but McMillian gave Hampton the lead back with a 3-pointer at the 12:11 mark.

Hampton Pirates hoops coaches earn contract extensions

Hampton University men's basketball coach Ed "Buck" Joyner and women's basketball coach David Six, who each led their teams to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament titles and NCAA appearances in their second seasons, received three-year contract extensions on Wednesday.

Joyner's Pirates went 24-9, won their first MEAC tournament since 2006 and posted their first 20-win season since the 2001-02 season. "I'm just happy with the fact that they think I'm capable of leading the program into the near future, and hopefully further than that," Joyner said.

The Lady Pirates went 25-7, won the MEAC regular-season title with their second straight 20-win season and fell to Kentucky in overtime in the first round of the NCAA.  "I think the best is yet to come," Six said. "We were a stone's throw away this year, and I really believe eventually we're going to knock that door down."

JOYNER AND SIX GET NEW CONTRACTS AT HAMPTON

HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton University men’s basketball coach Edward Joyner Jr. and women’s basketball coach David Six have both received new three-year contracts after guiding their respective teams to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championships and the resulting automatic berths to the NCAA tournament.

In announcing the new contracts, athletics director Lonza Hardy Jr. praised his second-year head coaches for their “inspiring leadership and skillful coaching.”

“Coaches Joyner and Six have certainly lived up to my expectations,” stated Hardy. “Their leadership and high quality of coaching have inspired our student-athletes to excel on the basketball court as well as in the classroom. I’m proud of what they have accomplished as our head coaches and I eagerly await the outstanding things that are in store for our men’s and women’s basketball programs. With Coach Joyner and Coach Six at the helm, the sky is the limit for the heights that our programs can reach.”

New coach brings new attitude to Hampton U's softball team

HAMPTON, VA — Her starting third baseman broke her arm two weeks before the season began. An outfielder broke her ankle sliding into second two weeks ago. Her pitching staff has of a total of two members, and her first season is off to a 9-23 start.

Those are the negatives. The positives radiate from Hampton softball coach Trena Peel's face, attitude and players.

"People keep saying, 'I feel bad for you. Your first year, you're in a trial by fire,' " said Peel, who responds to such talk with advice received from mentor and legendary UCLA coach Sue Enquist: " 'Keep believing and keep teaching the ones you have.' Just believe, and then we'll get the results."

A rookie head coach, Peel's career to this point has produced plenty of those.

UK opens NCAA Tournament play on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., as a four seed playing against 13th-seeded Hampton (25-6) of the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. The Wildcats may be seed-line favorites when the teams take the floor on at 6:30 p.m. ET, but the Lady Pirates have UK's full attention.

"I'm very impressed with Hampton," Mitchell said. "They have a great record. They're on a tremendous winning streak right now. They have not lost a game in a while so they have to be coming in with tremendous confidence."

The winning streak Mitchell is referring to is a 13-game stretch dating back to a Jan. 22 loss to Bethune-Cookman. In that time, the Lady Pirates have defeated all but two of their opponents by double digits, thoroughly dominating the MEAC in the process. Additionally, Hampton is 24-2 since a 1-4 start to their season, defeating Florida, an SEC rival of UK, 69-54 along the way.

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team, fresh off its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championship, will face No. 4 seed Kentucky on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Hampton Pirates have received a No. 13 seed in the Spokane Region and will face the No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats in the first round of the 2011 Women's NCAA Tournament Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Pirates qualified for the tournament by winning the MEAC Tournament with a win over Howard. It was Hampton's second-straight conference championship and they lost only one conference game during the regular season.

Kentucky, on the other hand, was arguably the SEC's second-best team behind perennial favorite Tennessee. The Wildcats enter the tournament with an at-large bid with a 24-8 record overall and 11-5 in the SEC.

McMillian shoots Hampton women into MEAC semifinals

Choicetta McMillian had a game-high 24 points, including a tournament-record seven 3-pointers, and Jericka Jenkins had a double-double with 10 points and a tournament-record 13 assists as top-seeded Hampton beat South Carolina State 78-55 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's quarterfinal on Wednesday at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.


The Lady Pirates (23-6), the defending tournament champions and the 2010-11 regular-season champs, also got 15 points from Melanie Warner, 12 from sophomore Keira Avant and 11 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Quanneisha Perry, the two-time MEAC defensive player of the year.

Hampton shot 49 percent for the game and was 12-of-21 from 3-point range while holding S.C. State to 39 percent shooting and converting 20 turnovers into 27 points. The Lady Pirates opened the game with a 16-4 run, keyed by three 3-pointers from McMillian, who had six 3's in the first half.

Hampton Lady Pirates Win MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team ran away with the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex.

The Lady Pirates have won eight of the last nine MEAC indoor championships, including seven straight from 2003-09. Hampton finished with a meet- and school-record 188.5 points, while Norfolk State finished second with 102.5 points.

Head coach Maurice Pierce was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Coach, while freshman Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and senior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) shared Most Outstanding Runner honors with Maryland Eastern Shore’s Cynthia Anais.

“Our freshmen stepped up to the plate,” Pierce said. “On top of Racquel’s performances, with our freshmen, it all came together today.”

Hampton Pirates second half surge beats UMES Hawks

HAMPTON– The Hampton University men’s basketball team used a strong second half to surge past Maryland Eastern Shore for its second straight win, taking a 78-66 victory at the HU Convocation Center on Monday night in front of a national ESPNU audience.

Junior guard Kwame Morgan led the Pirates with 30 points on a career-best 8-for-14 shooting from 3-point range. Junior guard Christopher Tolson added 11 points, while senior guard Brandon Tunnell added 10 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Junior forward Danny Agbelese pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

LADY PIRATES DEFENSE SUFFOCATES UMES

HAMPTON, Va. – For the second straight game, the Hampton University women’s basketball team used a suffocating defense en route to victory, beating Maryland Eastern Shore 47-29 Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.

The Lady Pirates (15-6, 8-1 MEAC) matched their season low for points allowed – they held Delaware State to 29 points on Saturday – in picking up their third straight win. UMES made just nine field goals and 10 free throws.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) led Hampton with 12 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 points and eight assists.

Pellum scores 34 as Hampton Pirates wins in San Francisco

Darrion Pellum scored a career-high 34 points for Hampton University (10-2), which pulled away late to beat Dominican (Calif.) 78-65 Wednesday at the Hilltop Challenge in San Francisco.

Pellum, a Hampton High graduate, knocked down a career-best nine 3-pointers for the Pirates, who outscored Division II Dominican 17-6 over the final 4:59. Charles Funches had 14 points and 16 rebounds for Hampton. Kwame Morgan added 20 points.

Marin brief: Dominican men lose basketball tourney opener

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The Dominican University men's basketball team overcame an early 8-0 deficit to take a 19-18 first-half lead, but in the end the Penguins were unable to hold off Hampton, falling 78-65 in the first round of the Hilltop Challenge at USF.

Dominican (0-8) trailed 37-24 at halftime but the Division II Penguins got no closer than seven points in the second half. The Pirates (10-2), a Division I team, pulled away late in the game.

Leon Hart led the Penguins with 17 points and Killian Larson added 16. Hampton's Darrion Pellum scored 34 points, hitting 9 of 13 3-point attempts in the process.

Troy Trojans Fall to Hampton University at Georgia State Invitational

ATLANTA – Dressing only nine players, the Troy University women's basketball team fell behind early on Wednesday afternoon and were unable to recover, falling 61-43 to Hampton University in the opening round of the Georgia State Invitational.

Junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) led the Trojans with 16 points, as she was the only player in double figures. Meanwhile, senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) recorded team-high eight rebounds just hours after arriving in Atlanta due to the blizzard in the northeast.

Quanneisha Perry led Hampton with 15 points and 17 rebounds, as she was one of two players to record a double-double on the night. Choicetta McMillian added 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win, while Jericka Jenkins scored 13 and Melanie Warner added 11 points in the win.

Big win for Hampton Lady Pirates

Hampton University’s women’s basketball team opened its season with a statement, beating James Madison 69-64 in Harrisonburg in the first round of the women’s preseason NIT.

Senior Quanneisha Perry, the preseason MEAC player of the year, had 27 points and 17 rebounds as the Lady Pirates, the defending MEAC champions, defeated the defending CAA champions. Both teams made NCAA tournament trips last season.

JMU senior guard Dawn Evans, who averaged 24.6 points per game last season to earn honorable menion All-America honors, scored 25 points, but shot just 8-of-28 from the floor and was 6-of-18 from 3-point range.

HU sophomore hits four homers in one softball game

Four home runs would make a good month for many players. But for Hampton University shortstop Rebecca Magett, they came in one game -- not surprisingly, a school record. Magett, a sophomore from Grand Rapids, Mich., enjoyed the best day of her softball career in Game 2 of a home doubleheader Friday. She capped it with a game-winning two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-9 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Magett was 4-for-5 with four runs and five RBI, countering the five RBI produced by UMES catcher Ashley Johnson. HU overcame an 8-3 deficit. Hampton (13-21, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won the opener 9-1.Magett was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI, Nina Ferguson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Jada Jefferies pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks.

Hampton Pirates takes title and trip to NCAA's in win over S.C. State

Quanneisha Perry scored a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hampton University to a 57-46 win over South Carolina State.


Hampton wasn't going to be denied this time. The Pirates, who lost last season's women's MEAC championship game to N.C. A&T, rolled to the title yesterday behind forward Melanie Warner, beating upstart S.C. State 57-46 at Joel Coliseum. As for interim Coach David Six, the director of intramurals at Hampton this time last year, it's probably time to lift the interim tag. "I've never said to the players anything about the interim label, I was just their coach," said Six, who before going to Hampton was a successful high-school coach.

"Things will work themselves out. … This is a dream come true and I'm living the dream. It wasn't that long ago I was a high-school coach, and Hampton gave me an opportunity and I had a ball with it." The Pirates (17-13) won their first title since 2004 and their fourth in school history. Warner led the way with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Quanneisha Perry had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Bernadette Fortune scored 12 points. "It's great that we are going to the NCAA Tournament, and I don't think that's hit us yet," Warner said of securing the conference's automatic bid.

North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies wins MEAC crown

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - It started ugly and only got worse for the Hampton Lady Pirates on Sunday. Playing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament championship at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Lady Pirates had more turnovers than field goals, struggled to slow down top-seeded North Carolina A & T and never seriously threatened as the Lady Aggies claimed a 76-54 victory.

The win secured the MEAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the Lady Aggies. "This all started from the day we lost (in last year's MEAC title game)," A & T coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs said. Senior forward Brittanie Taylor-James agreed. "Every day, in the locker room, we saw this posterboard that said 'unfinished business.' " Taylor-James said. "We took care of business today."

Defense helped the Lady Pirates (15-16) stay in the game early. Hampton trailed 7-4 with 12 minutes left in the first half, until N.C. A&T senior guard Amber Bland, a three-time first-team all-conference player, took over. Bland, the preseason conference player of the year, hit six straight shots, including four 3-pointers, as the Lady Aggies (26-6) won for the eighth straight time and 20th time in its past 21 games.

LANDOVER, Md - Norfolk State's men's track team, led by Marlon Woods, captured their fourth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference track and field title Saturday with 150 points at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. Morgan State was second with 103 points. Woods was named the Outstanding Performer by winning the high jump and triple jump and finishing second in the long jump.

"I'm really proud of my team," Woods said. "We haven't had the best of weather to practice in, but our whole team came together to get the win." Katie Wright, NSU's pole vaulter, set a MEAC record by clearing 3.36 meters and helped the Spartans finish second to Hampton in the women's competition. Hampton outscored NSU 148-107.

NSU's Kenneth Giles was named the Outstanding Coach for the 15th time.

Aggies cruise past Hampton in O.T. thriller

Aggies battle back from six-point overtime deficit

RALEIGH, N.C. – One day soon Patricia Cage-Bibbs will no longer have to describe Lamona Smalley as if she is someone who just stepped on campus. Those who know N.C. A&T women’s basketball, realize Smalley has been the spark plug in a number of the Aggies wins this season.

Count Friday afternoon’s 74-71 overtime victory over Hampton in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament at the RBC Center as one of those games. Smalley hit the game-tying shot to send the game into overtime. She then hit a crucial game-tying overtime shot and made the assists on the game-winning basket in overtime.

In addition, she made several key defensive stops down the stretch and her line was reflective her performance. She scored 12 points, had 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals to help the Aggies advance to their first MEAC Championship game in 14 years. It was Smalley’s seventh career double-double and her sixth of the season.

The Aggies will play Coppin State Saturday afternoon at 1 from the RBC Center.

Hampton advances over Maryland-Eastern Shore

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Bad basketball can still lead to good results. The Hampton Pirates took what they could get in the second round of the MEAC Tournament Thursday — a 56-49 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore and a ticket to the semifinals vs N.C. A&T.

But getting there wasn’t pretty. A combined 5-for-31 on 3-point attempts and a 24.2 first half shooting percentage for the Pirates. But still, they advanced. “We might have been a little nervous. I talked to some of the freshman and tried to calm them down,” said Hampton guard Rachel Butler, one of the game’s bright spots, scoring 20 points.

Howard Lady Bison routed by Hampton University

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University Lady Pirates basketball team concluded regular-season play with a 28-point shellacking of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Howard University here on Thursday, defeating the Lady Bison 74-46 at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton, 17-12 overall and 10-6 in the MEAC, led 41-31 at halftime. Howard ended the regular-season with records of 4-25 overall and 3-13 in the conference. Mebane said his team’s performances over the last three games are hopefully an indication of the level of preparedness his players have for next week’s MEAC tournament, which will be played at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. on March 10-15.

Winston-Salem, NC – The Lady Pirates of Hampton University scored 35 points off the bench on their way to a 58-38 victory over the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University.

Ashlee Finley scored 14 points while Stephanie James and Quanneisha Perry both scored 10 points as the Lady Pirates improved to 10-6 on the season, while the Lady Rams fell to 1-13.

Hampton led 40-20 at halftime while shooting 53 percent from the field, hitting 18 of 30 shots. The Lady Rams were held to just 23 percent shooting in the first half, connecting on just six of 26 shots. The Lady Pirates scored 22 of their first half shots off WSSU turnovers.
