Howard Bison wins overtime thriller over Delaware Blue Hens

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University guard Glenn Andrews scored 28 points and hit a game-tying three-pointer to force overtime as the Bison men’s basketball team posted an 88-83 victory over the University of Delaware in an overtime thriller Thursday night at Burr Gymnasium.

The Bison, who improved to 4-9 on the season while snapping a four-game losing streak, also got 16 points from Calvin Thompson and 11 from Dadrian Collins. Andrews, playing in just his third game for Howard after transferring from Tulsa, went 9 of 18 from the field including 6 of 12 from behind the arc as the Bison snapped a three-game skid to the Blue Hens.

Delaware, which dropped to 5-5 on the year, got a career-high 17 points from freshman guard Jarvis Threatt, while junior forward Jamelle Hagins posted his seventh consecutive double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Devon Saddler reached double figures for the ninth time in 10 games by pouring in 14 points, while Josh Brinkley had 12 for the Blue Hens.

The game was tied at 70-70 in the final minute when Saddler drove the right side before feeding Kyle Anderson, who buried a three-pointer from the right wing to put Delaware in front by three with 43 seconds on the clock.

No. 18 Georgetown Hosts Howard on Saturday at Verizon Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 18/21 Georgetown University men's basketball team hosts D.C. rival Howard on Saturday in a non-league contest at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for noon.

The game will be shown live on MASN, with Jason Knapp and Mark Tillmon calling all of the action. Fans can also see the game on SNY in New York and Connecticut and on the Brighthouse Network in Florida. Locally, fans can tune into Rich Chvotkin's radio call on ESPN 980 AM.

The Hoyas improved to 7-1 with an 84-44 win over NJIT last Saturday, the team's fifth-straight win. Georgetown moved into the national rankings after five-straight wins, highlighted by victories over then-No. 8 Memphis (91-88 in overtime) and at then-No. 12 Alabama, 57-55. The Hoyas are ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll.

The meeting with Howard on Saturday will be the seventh all-time between the schools, with Georgetown leading the head-to-head series, 6-0. The last meeting between the teams was a 79-55 Hoya win during the 2004-05 season.

Junior forward Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola), who was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, led the team to three wins week, including the thriller at Alabama, when he hit a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to seal the team's second triumph over a top-15 team this season. Thompson is second on the team in scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (5.5 rpg). He is shooting 56.8 percent from the floor and 58.8 percent from three-point land.

Last week, Thompson averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists to lead the Hoyas to wins over IUPUI, Alabama and NJIT. He recorded his second career double-double in the win over IUPUI, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and against NJIT, he scored 20 points and set a career-high with six three-point field goals.

Howard enters Saturday's game with a 3-5 overall record following a 72-65 win over Delaware State earlier in the week. Calvin Thompson leads the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game, while Mike Phillips is second on the team with 9.8 points and leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Tarpley TDs help DSU Hornets stun Howard

DOVER, Delaware — Delaware State ended its eight-game losing streak by rallying from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit behind two Travis Tarpley touchdowns to edge Howard 39-36 Saturday for its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season.

Delaware State (3-8 overall, 1-7 MEAC) found itself trailing 36-24 with 13:39 to go after the Bison’s Terrance LeFall scored his second touchdown of the game.

“Our mind-set was to keep working hard and keep fighting and just stay together,” Tarpley said. “All season, the obstacle was just staying together as one unit, and that’s what the coaches put in our heads this game. If we played together, we’d have a great outcome.”

Facing second-and-10 at the Bison 38 on the Hornets’ next possession, Nick Elko moved to his right and passed to Tarpley near the line of scrimmage. Tarpley weaved through the Bison defense and ran into the end zone. With Mitchell Ward’s point-after kick, Delaware State closed the gap to 36-31.

Spruce Creek's star Austin O'Brien signs with Howard University

PORT ORANGE, Florida -- Austin O'Brien is going places, judging from his selection of Howard University as the launching pad for his college soccer career.

O'Brien, a senior striker for Spruce Creek, went to the nation's capital in March to make it official: He has signed with Howard, a prestigious historically black university that U.S. News and World Report ranks No. 2 among all HBCUs and in the top 100 of all U.S. colleges and universities`.

While Howard is No. 2 on the magazine's list of HBCUs, O'Brien came out ranked No. 1 in voting by area coaches and The News-Journal prep staff to decide the 2011 Boys Soccer Player of the Year honor.

O'Brien, who had 28 goals and 13 assists for a Hawks team that lost 2-1 to Miami Varela in the Class 6A Final Four and played some of the toughest competition in the state, edged teammate Kiro Roman and Taylor's Jose Rios, both of whom had extraordinary seasons. Roman scored 22 goals and had 19 assists for the 26-2-4 regional-champion Hawks, while Rios had 43 goals for the 16-4-1 district-champion Wildcats.

Several schools in the Sunshine State, including Florida Gulf Coast University and South Florida, recruited O'Brien. But in the end he opted for one of his out-of-state options, deciding on Howard, which plays in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Soccer Conference that also includes Adelphi (Long Island, N.Y.), Longwood (Virginia), New Jersey Institute of Technology and Houston Baptist.



Boys soccer chatter with Spruce Creek's Austin O'Brien

O'Brien, a senior forward, is the Hawks' leading scorer with 23 goals and 11 assists for a total of 57 points. Creek is the No. 1 seed in this week's District 2-6A boys soccer tournament in large part to the offense put up by O'Brien and fellow Hawk Kiro Roman (18 goals, 13 assists, 49 points). O'Brien spoke to staff writer Sean Kernan.

You're having a great season. The team is 19-1-4. What's the mood going into districts?

"We plan on winning and doing really well. We just want to play our game and reach our goals -- stay focused on winning districts, playing well in regionals and just continue on and play out the season."

How old are you and how long have you been playing soccer?

"I'm 18 years old and I've been playing soccer since I was 3 years old. My mother (Maria) got me into soccer. She was a runner. She was pretty good at it. So she saw soccer as a running sport. I guess when you're 3 you can't run track. At first we started off just kicking a ball around the house and when I got to be 4 or 5 she put me in a YMCA league. I guess she saw that I was pretty good and she never took me out of it."

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Howard lacrosse team fell in the quarterfinals of the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament on Friday at Richardson Stadium at the hands of the Jacksonville Dolphins. Senior Desiree Cox and freshman Courtland Lackey led the Bison with three goals a piece in the 22-7 loss.

Lackey got Howard (4-12) on the board quickly with 28:55 on the clock, responding to JU’s Morgan Derner who scored in the opening seconds of the match. Jacksonville (13-4) went on to take a 13-0 run in the first half before Cox and Chastity Dailey recorded late goals. Lackey was the only member of the Bison to record an assist, giving her four points in the game to lead Howard.

Howard’s leading scorers – Lackey and Cox – each dispersed two goals in the second half helping the Lady Bison to hold their NLC opponents 7-4 after halftime. Goalkeeper Amber Meeks recorded 15 saves in the match while Dolphin’s Elizabeth Gatch recorded four.

Overall HU was outshot 46-15 and Jacksonville maintained the draw control advantage 21-10. Cox was credited with four draw controls on behalf of HU. The Lady Bison were narrowly edged in groundballs 28-19. Leading the Bison in groundballs was Sydney Satchell with five. Five members of the Lady Bison recorded a caused turnover.

The loss marked the second time the Lady Bison dropped to the Dolphins this season. The Lady Bison will face Liberty University at 9:00 a.m. Saturday in the double elimination tournament.

Hampton Uses Defensive Formula to Shut Down Howard and Win Tourney Title

Winston-Salem, NC—(March 12, 2011)-- Hampton University employed the same formula that it has used throughout the tournament: Keeping the game close through the first half and then parlaying the scoring of its three veterans, Melanie Warner, Quanneisha Perry and Jericka Jenkins along with some stifling second half defense to pull away from its opponents.

The Lady Pirates continued that same formula to defeat Howard University, 61-42 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament championship at the Joel Coliseum.

"It is interesting that these two teams are 1-2 in the conference in scoring defense," said Hampton head Coach David Six, in his second year at the helm. "In the first half, we were feeling each other out. But in the second half, we got things going. We knew that if we did not turn the ball over and rebound well, we would win the game. We have been consistent in those areas all season."

Hampton (25-6) receives an automatic bid and will await the pairings that will be announced on Monday.

The first half was a grind it out affair with neither team being able to generate much offense. Both teams shot under 30 percent, but the seasoned Lady Pirates, who won their second straight tournament title, did just enough to maintain a 21-16 advantage at the half.

Perry, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-MEAC selection, struggled early but came on down the stretch to give her team a push. She scored six points and grabbed six rebounds while Warner added four and reserve Keiara Avant tallied five.

Hampton came out and imposed its will on the young Howard team, which is dominated by sophomores and who were playing in their first tournament championship.

"I think Hampton's experience was definitely a factor, especially when you have players like Warner, Jenkins and Perry," said Howard Coach Niki Geckeler, in her first tournament championship as a head coach. "But that was not the overriding factor. We just lost our legs. We played four games to get here. We are very young and I am excited about the future."

The Lady Pirates forced the Lady Bison into bad shots and turnovers and made them pay at the other end with trips with timely baskets and trips to the foul line, where they converted on 16 of 20. Warner, Jenkins and Perry took turns as they finished with 13 each.

"We knew that we had to play defense in order to win the championship," said Perry, named the tournament MVP. "We knew that if we continued to play hard and play great defense we would be successful."

Howard (16-18) began to press on offense and in the process, missed a number of point blank shots. The team-leading scorer and MEAC Player of the Year, Saadia Doyle, had problems getting touches and it proved to be a problem for the Lady Bison. And their point guard, Cheyenne Curley Payne, who was had an outstanding tournament before this game, was held scoreless.

"Their defense was really sagging and helping out a lot," said Doyle, who finished with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. "It made it hard to penetrate and we did not knock down the shots that we hot earlier in the tournament."

Tamoria Holmes finished with 12 for Howard in a losing while Curley Payne pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.

In addition to the contribution of the Big Three for Hampton, Avant aided the cause with 9 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

This is the second straight trip to the NCAAs for Coach Six and his Lady Pirates. He says that he is looking forward to the experience.

"Our performance in the NCAAs last year left a bad taste in our mouths," said Six. "We wanted an opportunity to get back there and atone ourselves. We do not just want to be there; we want to win. I think we are good enough to win."

Six was named the Tournament Outstanding Coach while Perry, Jenkins, Shawntae Payne (Coppin State), Doyle and Curley Payne were named to the all-tournament team. Perry was named tournament MVP.

Florida A&M has a 24-6 lead in its all-time series against Howard, which is coming off back-to-back losses to start the 2008 season. Bison coach Carey Bailey wants his players to forget all that by kickoff, as well as anything else that might have gone wrong. "You live in the past and you have no future," Bailey said earlier this week during MEAC coaches conference call. "The thing about football is you don't have a lot of time to celebrate or mourn. You have to go get your mind on the next game."

The next game is FAMU today at Green Stadium in Washington, D.C., where Howard used a spread offense to baffle Hampton before falling 38-27 last weekend. The loss kept Howard winless on a day that quarterback Floyd Haigler put himself in the program's record book by passing for 456 yards. The offense that Haigler is directing could make the afternoon interesting for the FAMU defense because of similarities to what the Rattlers saw in their first game against Alabama State. FAMU could not get more than a seven-point lead, mostly because of the short underneath passes that often caught the defense off-guard. That and Haigler's speed has been a concern for FAMU head coach Joe Taylor this week.

Senior Linebacker Could Be Howard's Next NFL Star

This electrical engineering major could be Howards next big NFL star.

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- On Monday, Howard University senior linebacker Endor Cooper -- already named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's preseason defensive player of the year -- was honored as the conference's defensive player of the week. In Sunday's 12-7 loss to Georgetown University, Cooper recorded a career high 18 tackles, including 13 unassisted and 2.5 tackles for losses, according to the official Web site of Howard athletics.

Cooper burst onto the scene as a sophomore when he recorded five sacks in a game against Bethune-Cookman. That was the most ever in a game in Howard football history.
Cooper's talent was noticed when he played at Hylton High School in Woodbridge. He was selected as one of George Michael's Golden 11 and received scholarship offers from big programs.

Ray Ray McElrathbey Begins a New Chapter at HU

There is a 13-year-old running around in Cook Hall, hanging out with the football players and playing video games. Fahmarr McElrathbey seems like a typical kid but he's far from that. He followed his brother Ramon "Ray Ray" McElrathbey to Howard University from Clemson University where his brother is an alum and also played football.

While most students have classes, extracurricular activities and maybe a job to juggle, McElrathbey who is a graduate student studying Mass Communications, has more responsibilities than the average college student. In 2006, he adopted Fahmarr from his mother who is a recovering drug addict. And wherever big brother goes, little brother isn't too far behind. Finding a place to live and searching for the perfect school for Fahmarr are some of the decisions the 21-year-old has to make.

Howard alumna Florida's first African-American female chief justice

At a heady time when an African American and a woman are serious contenders for the White House, Florida is marking its own milestone. The state Supreme Court is about to have its first African-American female chief justice.

Justice Peggy Quince, known for a quick mind and probing questions on the bench, and an engaging personality off, was elected by her six fellow justices for the rotating, two-year post, the court announced Friday. Her term begins July 1.

"It is an honor and a privilege being a member of the Court and serving with outstanding Florida public servants," Quince said in a written statement. "I thank my colleagues for their trust in me and look forward to serving the people of this state in this new capacity."

Justice Quince is married to Fred L. Buckine, attorney at law, and they have two daughters, Peggy LaVerne, a graduate of Florida A & M University, and Laura LaVerne, a graduate of the University of Central Florida.

Justice Quince graduated in 1970 from Howard University with a B.S. Degree in Zoology; she received her J.D. Degree from the Catholic University of America in 1975. While a law student she was active in Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the Black American Law Students Association; she received an award for her work with Catholic's Neighborhood Legal Services Clinic.

In 1999, she received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the Stetson University College of Law. In 2004, she received an honorary doctor of laws degree from St. Thomas University School of Law.

A Howard Bison's fast track to the Super Bowl

How was it that, he, Geoff Pope, cornerback from Howard University, undrafted by every NFL team, cast away by the worst club in the league, told years ago by the football coach at Eastern Michigan that he wasn't even good enough to play there, wound up on the New York Giants? On the field? Going to the Super Bowl?

"It's certainly a rush," Pope said that evening as he sat in a Starbucks near downtown Bethesda, Maryland. He wore a gray pinstripe suit, purple tie and a Giants playoff cap. Across the table sat his business manager, Omar Sillah. And they had put together an ambitious agenda for this first Tuesday of his Super Bowl life with the stock exchange visit in the morning, then some television interviews in New York, a flight to Washington and more television appearances before resting here while a car service waited on the street outside.
