Grambling State Tigers rallies to beat Jackson State, 26-23

Jackson, Mississippi -- Grambling State pulled off a late comeback and last-second defensive stand to take a 26-23 win over Jackson State in Jackson on Saturday.

Sophomore running back Dawrence Roberts scampered to paydirt from 10 yards out against a stacked Jackson State defensive line with 1:24 remaining to put Grambling up by three points. But the game was far from over with high-powered quarterback Casey Therriault behind center for JSU.

Therriault moved the home-standing JSU Tigers within scoring position in the final minute. Jackson State opted to go for the win as opposed to a field goal and overtime, but Theriault's pass to the corner of the end zone as time expired was overthrown.

"The most important thing is the way you finish and that's something we've done a good job of the past four weeks," a Gatorade-soaked GSU coach Doug Williams said. "The Grambling-Jackson State rivalry has always been big and a big part of (Southwestern Athletic Conference) football, and with (JSU) celebrating its football centennial, we knew this was going to be a big one."

Special teams play leaves J-State kicking itself

The words rolled off of Jackson State coach Rick Comegy's lips with the most disgusting tone. "Putrid," he said, referring to the Tigers' special teams play during Saturday's 26-23 loss to Grambling.

 JSU allowed a whopping 213 yards on six kickoff returns, muffed a third punt return this season and missed a late field goal. Grambling's average field position after a JSU kickoff? The 44-yard line.

The G-men returned the first kickoff to the JSU 20-yard line, a 56-yard return that eventually led to a field goal.

Part of the kickoff troubles can be blamed on injury. Kris Selita, the team's normal kickoff specialist and punter, didn't play because of an injury to his plant leg.

Grambling loss knocks JSU from black college title picture

Time has expired on Jackson State's bid for a black college national championship.

The Tigers tossed away a chance at a game-tying field goal Saturday, deciding not to use a timeout and allowing time to run out during a last-second throw to the end zone in a 26-23 loss to pesky conference rival Grambling.

This, a fourth straight defeat to Grambling (5-4), might burn the most.

Jackson State (7-2) entered as the No. 1 black college team in the country, three wins away from winning a mythical black college national title.

Stopping veteran QB key for GSU

GRAMBLING, Louisiana — Grambling coach Doug Williams talked less about his two young quarterbacks this Monday than any other week this season. The player taking the snaps against his defense this week, however, prompted more questions than any opposing athlete thus far.

"The one thing they have going for them that we don't have, but eventually will have, is the veteran quarterback," Williams said. "He's played well. He's an All-American ... They've got some mature players, and they're making plays."

"Playing well" might be an understatement for Casey Therriault's performance this season for Jackson State (7-1, 5-1). The 22-year-old senior has completed 183 of his 313 pass attempts (58.5 percent) for 2,441 yards (305.1 per game) and 17 touchdowns — all conference-leading statistics.  No other SWAC quarterback has more than 235 pass attempts, 122 completions, 1,446 yards or 12 touchdowns.

Billups is solid at Jackson State University

Jackson, Mississippi -- Jonathan Billups has become a solid part to one of the toughest defenses in college football. Billups, a former all-state player at Picayune High, is in his second season as a starting defensive lineman for Jackson State. The Tigers are 6-1 after Saturday’s win over in-state rival Mississippi Valley, and the JSU defense is the tops in Division I-AA against the run.

“I think I’ve been playing pretty well, but I am always trying to get better every day,” Billups, who lines up at both nose and tackle, said. “I think I have gotten better each year I have been here, and I just plan on continuing to work hard and improve each time out.”

So far this season, Billups has started every game and has recorded 31 total tackles, including 13 solo stops. He has one sack, and five tackles for loss, and he has one fumble recovery, one pass break up and one quarterback hurry.

JSU Tigers unable to hit long ball vs. MVSU Devils' scheme

Itta Bena, Mississippi -- Joseph LeBeau had seen this before. Watching from the sideline Saturday during Jackson State’s 17-16 win over Mississippi Valley State, he noticed the Delta Devils’ scheme in the secondary.

“They played more of an Alabama State defense on our offense,” the JSU defensive end said. All agreed that Mississippi Valley (0-7) mimicked a scheme Alabama State used three weeks ago to hand JSU a loss and force six interceptions from quarterback Casey Therriault.

The scheme? A mix of cover-2, cover-4. Valley’s cornerbacks played as much as 15 yards off the ball and their safeties were in farther, preventing JSU’s go-to play: the long pass. “They didn’t let our receivers get behind them,” Therriault said. “They kept everything in front, looking for tipped balls, looking to jump routes. It was a good scheme.”

It worked, too, at least in the first half.

Jackson State and Tigers fan base are above the crowd

Jackson, Mississippi -- What some are proclaiming to be the "best show that the Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South Marching Band has performed in recent times," was missed by most of the nation. As usual, ESPNU cut away to Sports Center for the entire half-time period of the televised Texas Southern vs. JSU game on Sept. 29.

With over 26,000 in attendance (this has to be an HBCU attendance record for a Thursday night game) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the JSU Sonic Boom of the South, the Air Raid offense, the Darkside defense, and Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger made it a memorable event for JSU/TSU fans.

Ruettiger, the inspiration for the 1993 Disney movie "Rudy" spoke at a luncheon at Jackson State University and gave the JSU Tigers football team an uplifting speech before the game.

The rest is history as the JSU Tigers manhandled Texas Southern's No.1 ranked defense (in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision) with 37 points in the second quarter on their way to a 58-13 rout.

The Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul Marching Band made the trip to Jackson, and also performed extremely well.

There is no other fan like a fervent JSU Tigers fan. No doubt, they have some of the most passionate fans in all of college football.

1. Jackson State ranks second in the conference in total defense, in part because of a solid defensive front that makes the Tigers a formidable group against both the run and the pass.

"They're huge in the middle," Alabama State head coach Reggie Barlow said. "That's going to be a big challenge being able to run the ball on these guys. We haven't rushed the ball particularly well anyway and now you've got a big stout defensive front with big linebackers. We're going to have to create some other running opportunities."

2. The Hornets had their hands full last year trying to defend Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault, and they'll face the same daunting task again today.

"He's about as good as we've seen over the last few years in the conference," Barlow noted. "He's a pinpoint passer and has some receivers to throw to. They've got a real good scheme. It's patented for him. We're really going to have to be on top of things as far as coverage to have a chance of success against them."

SU pass defense to get test

Baton Rouge, LA - Although Southern’s pass defense has been relatively solid through two games - opposing quarterbacks have completed only 45 percent of their throws - second-year coach Stump Mitchell said he’s still looking for more big plays from his secondary.

More to the point: When the Jaguars (1-1, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) face Jackson State (2-0, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium, Mitchell would love to see some interceptions. During a 21-6 victory over Alabama A&M last week, SU had 11 pass breakups, but no interceptions.

The Jaguars are, in fact, still searching for their first takeaway this season.

"Classic" Not Just A Game

Memphis, TN - Kick off to the 22nd annual Southern Heritage Classic comes later in the evening but the festivities started long before the teams ever hit the field. It all started with the folks lined up along Park Avenue in Orange Mound. People flooded the streets this weekend taking in the sights and sounds of the Classic parade.

Mamie Harmon said, "I come every year. I owned a house on Dunmoore. I lived over there for 7 years. I watched the parade. Now I live over here and I've been here 4 years and I made every parade."

They come to see the dancers, the high stepping bands including the show stopping Sonic Boom band from Jackson State University and the Aristocrat of bands from Tennessee State University. For the crowd attending, it's a sneak peek of the battle of the bands they hope to see later on the football field. However, the parade is proof the weekend is more than just about the game.



The Tennessee State University Aristocrat of Bands visited the LeBonheur Children's Hospital of Memphis Tennnessee during their Southern Heritage Classic weekend. The annual visit gives the children inspiration and motivation on Friday afternoon, while allowing the students in the band the opportunity to perform music and give personal time and cheer to the children, before playing in Saturday's parade and football game. Therriault heeds JSU opportunity

Jackson, MS - Casey Therriault showed he is first rate at making the most of a second chance. Back on the football field after serving time for a manslaughter conviction, Therriault took full advantage of the opportunity afforded him at Jackson State and had a first year few in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will ever forget.

Last season, the Tigers’ 6-foot-5, 203-pound quarterback, was second in the Football Championship Subdivision with 3,436 yards passing and was third nationally in with 312.0 yards per game. He threw for a school record-tying 31 touchdowns while rushing for 10 more. His 3,600 yards in total offense was the best in the SWAC and second in the nation. Twice last season Therriault threw for five touchdowns and had seven 300-yard passing games. Additionally, he led the FCS in points responsible for with 23.1 points per game. The season culminated in his being selected 2010 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year -- he’s picked to win it again this year -- SWAC Newcomer of the Year, first team All-SWAC, a 2010 SBN All-American, 2010 Walter Payton Award and Conerly Trophy finalist.

Power-packed Sims gives JSU Tigers options in backfield

Jackson, MS - As Rakeem Sims ripped through Jackson State's defense during a scrimmage at practice last week, observing players gave their genuine opinions. "I told you he was the best running back," one said. Added another: "You can't tackle him at the legs."

Sims, a 5-foot-11, 225-pound bulldozing running back from Richton, has impressed just about everyone who's seen him barrel over defenders, hurdle would-be tacklers and race past others during the first three weeks of practice.



A 2010 signee who did not qualify academically to play last season but was enrolled in school, Sims is the new face in Jackson State's stable of running backs, the guy who might give the Tigers their first 1,000-yard rusher since 1999.

JSU's McDonald making push to regain backup role

Jackson, MS - Dedric McDonald began his quest of regaining the spot as Jackson State's backup quarterback Sunday. For the first time in camp, he practiced full speed and donned shoulder pads.

McDonald, who was awaiting medical clearance to practice, lost the starting quarterback job to Casey Therriault last fall camp. He'll spend this one battling for the No. 2 spot with ex-Callaway QB Mark Thigpen and Tevin Chapman.



"It's going to be a great battle," coach Rick Comegy said. "It's exciting to see."

Comegy said Chapman, a sophomore from Hattiesburg, emerged as the No. 2 QB after spring drills. "That's how we felt," Comegy said. But the coach doesn't expect McDonald, a junior, to be the Tigers' No. 3 or 4 when the season opens ...

Century of greatness convenes as JSU unveils all-time football team

Jackson, MS - A white visor pulled low shielding most of his face, Eddie Payton scans the packed locker room at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. His eyes fall on the greatest football players in Jackson State history.

There's Rodney Phillips, a two-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference tight end, and Willie Richardson, a four-time All-SWAC receiver.

There's Jesse Griffin, who led JSU's 1977 defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation, and Mario Kirksey, the 1982 SWAC defensive player of the year. And there's Perry Harrington and Jeffrey Moore, the first pair of players on the same team to rush for 1,000 yards each in Division I-AA.

"You can't," Payton said, "put a price on this."

Alabama State Upsets JSU; Wins Eighth Straight

JACKSON, Miss. – The Alabama State Men's basketball won its eighth game in succession with a 63-53 victory over Jackson State. It was a significant game in regards to seeding for the Southwestern Athletic Tournament. ASU (14-16, 11-6) now moves into third place in the standings. JSU falls to 15-14 overall and 11-6 in the conference.

ASU forced the Tigers into its lowest scoring output in conference play “We wanted to make them take tough shots”. Head coach Lewis Jackson said. We fought hard on the boards, made our free throws when they counted, and that was the difference”.

Two months ago in the conference opener, JSU prevailed in overtime 58-52. ASU missed 21 free throws in that game.

Tyrone Hansen entered the contest for JSU as the third leading scorer in SWAC. Despite 14 first half points from Hanson, ASU only trailed by two points at halftime 30-28. Hansen would go on to score a game high 21 points.

JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State men's basketball team fell 63-53 to the Alabama State Hornets Monday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

With the loss JSU falls to a 15-14 overall record and an 11-6 conference mark. Alabama State improves to a 14-16, 11-6 record.

Tyrone Hanson came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points to lead JSU. Jenirro Bush followed with 11 points. Tremayne Moorer led ASU with 16 points and Chris Duncan added 10.

JSU lets 15-point lead slip away, takes hit in SWAC standings

The shot bounded off the side rim. Grant Maxey's head dipped. And Jackson State missed a monumental opportunity. Texas Southern overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to stun JSU 70-67 on Saturday night, clawing back into the game in the final moments to take control of the conference lead.

"To say the least, it was very disappointing," JSU coach Tevester Anderson said. "This game will hurt for a while because it was a big game."  Huge.

It was a battle between the conference's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, a clash involving the third- and fourth-ranked squads in Division I black college basketball - both scrapping for a leg up in the league in front of an announced 2,002 crowd at the Athletics and Assembly Center.

Men's Basketball: JSU 67, Texas Southern 70

JACKSON, Miss. - Despite having three players score in double figures and owing a 16-point second half lead the Jackson State men's basketball team fell 70-67 to Texas Southern in a battle for the No. 1 spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings Saturday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

With the loss JSU falls to 13-11 overall record and a 9-3 SWAC mark. Texas Southern improves to 12-10, 10-1 record.

Grant Maxey led JSU with 18 points in 21 minutes. Tyrone Hanson added 16 and Jenirro Bush scored 15. Travele Jones recorded a double-double as he scored a game high 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Texas Southern. Lawrence Danner-Johnson scored 15, Keithtrick Denson added 14 and Kevin Galloway scored 10.

Bench scoring proved to be the difference in the game for TSU. Texas Southern got 22 bench points while JSU got 14 bench points.

JSU jumped out to an early lead and took a 37-28 advantage into halftime. In the second half, JSU led by as many as 16, 53-37, with 13:06 left to play. Texas Southern then outscored Jackson State 23-8 to pull within 61-60 on Kevin Galloway's free throws with 2:28 remaining.

Jackson State returns to action Monday, Feb. 14 when the Tigers host Prairie View A&M on ESPNU. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.

JACKSON, Miss. - Three Lady Tigers scored in double figures to help the Jackson State women's basketball beat Texas Southern 56-49 Saturday at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. JSU swept the regular season series against Texas Southern.

With the win JSU improves to a 6-15 overall record and a 5-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference mark. Texas Southern falls to a 4-18, 2-9 record. Jackson State is ranked seventh in the SWAC standings.

Alcorn beats rival Jackson State 81-75

ASU Braves Coach Larry Smith

LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State took the lead with 1:25 left in the second half over SWAC rival Jackson State with a three-pointer by Marquiz Baker. The late shot put Alcorn up 73-71 and they were able to close out the visiting Tigers with an 81-75 victory.

“Jackson State is a good team, they’re solid. Our defense did a great job, we shut them down in terms of percentage,” head coach Larry Smith said. “Our kids played hard for 40 minutes and we stepped up down the stretch.”

Early in the game, the Braves led by as many as 10 as the offense took advantage of many put backs and fast breaks points. Meanwhile, the defense contested every shot well, not allowing the Tigers to have any open looks at the basket.

JSU Turnovers lead to Alcorn State Lady Braves 66-54 win

The Lady Braves of Alcorn State defeated conference rival Jackson State 66-54. Alcorn, now 7-12 (6-4), outscored the Lady Tigers despite shooting a lower field goal percentage. However, the Lady Braves were more efficient from with three-pointers and from the free throw line.

The Lady Braves shot 50 percent from downtown, making eight while shooting 20-29 from the free throw line.

Baker, Braves ambush Tigers

Not this time, Marquiz Baker told Jackson State. Not this time. Baker, Alcorn State's fiery shooting guard, scored 23 points - seven of those coming inside 2 minutes - and the Braves beat Jackson State 81-75 on Saturday night, upsetting the conference-leading Tigers and breaking a seven-game losing streak to their bitter rivals.

Said Baker: "I was determined not to let Jackson State beat us at home this time."

The conference's ninth- place team entering the day, Alcorn State (3-17, 3-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) rarely trailed and knocked off the the Tigers (12-10, 8-2) three weeks after losing to them by 26 points in Jackson.

With its largest crowd of the season (6,809) on hand and about 20 football recruits watching from courtside seats, Jackson State turned this Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown into nothing but a snoozer. Said JSU's Tyrone Hanson: "We were really souped up for this game."

Hanson and the Tigers beat Mississippi Valley State 83-73 Saturday night, remaining atop the conference standings and sending the league's most surprisingly successful squad home with its first loss since Jan. 10.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State women’s basketball team fell 67-54 to in-state rival Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

With the loss JSU falls to a 4-13 overall record and a 3-5 SWAC mark. MVSU improves to 7-12, 5-3. Rachel Jones led JSU with a 15 point, six rebound effort. Tiffany Kellum came off the bench to add 10 points.

Woods, Mississippi Valley Devils beat SWAC drum after singing gym blues

Coach Sean Woods makes sure you get it correct. The Mississippi Valley State basketball team didn't have the luxury of practicing in a high school gym. "Middle school," he said. "A middle school gym."

Heading into tonight's Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown with Jackson State, the Delta Devils have come quite a ways. Their basketball arena floor is no longer a bubbling, waterlogged mess. They no longer practice in that middle school gym. They don't play "home" games at county civic centers any more. And, they aren't thought of as a middle-of-the-pack team.

Picked to finish seventh in the 10-team conference before the season, Valley (7-13) is 6-1 in the league, tied atop the standings with Jackson State (10-9) and Texas Southern (8-10).

Jackson State hands FIU men third loss in a row

Jenniro Bush scored 23 points to help lead Jackson State to a 61-52 victory over visiting FIU on Saturday night. Jackson State (2-6), playing at home for the first time this season, struggled to take advantage of its surroundings and fell behind 22-12 with 3:57 left in the first half. But three consecutive three-pointers from Bush and a layup by Chris Hyche cut FIU's lead to 24-23 at halftime.

Jackson State surged in the second half, shooting 12 for 21 (57.1 percent) from the field to take a 59-46 lead with 50 seconds remaining. FIU has lost three in a row after starting the season 4-1.

No place like home: Bush, Tigers rally past Panthers

Jackson, Ms. - Starting the season with seven straight road gameEdit HTMLs looked like it was affecting Jackson State early in Saturday's home game against Florida International. Coach Tevester Anderson said he felt like he was coaching in a strange gym. Junior forward Jenirro Bush, a transfer from Arkansas-Fort Smith, was playing in a strange gym.

It didn't take long for either of them to overcome all that, however. Bush scored 23 points to lead the Tigers to a 61-52 victory over Isiah Thomas-coached Florida International in JSU's first home game of the season and Bush's first game as a Tiger at the Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

50K Expected To Attend Capital City Classic - JSU vs. Alcorn State

JACKSON, Miss. -- More than 50,000 fans are expected to attend Saturday's Capital City Classic, which means that parking will be at a premium. Kickoff for the game, which pits Alcorn State University against Jackson State University, will be at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. But Jackson police are asking fans to show up at least two hours early. The stadium parking lot was already about half full Friday afternoon.

Alcorn looks to end season with win over rivals

LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State might not be playing for a SWAC East division championship today, but the Braves are playing for something almost as important — pride. The Braves will travel to Jackson to take on arch-rival Jackson State in the annual Capital City Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.

Even though both teams were eliminated from the division championship race last week, both teams will be looking for bragging rights in the annual SWAC showdown. Alcorn State head coach Earnest Collins said a victory over its rival is also important due to the recruiting ramifications.

They've all been waiting for this — coaches, players, fans of Jackson State. They've been waiting for running back Alfred Moreland to go wild. They've been waiting for Moreland to show the stuff that made him a three-star recruit out of Georgia's Banneker High School. They've been waiting to see those juke and jive moves and that fearless running style that led to an early scholarship offer from Ole Miss.

"Moreland had a great high school career, and we just hadn't seen him touch upon that yet," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. "He just never broke out here." He's out now. The wait is over.

With leader suspended, JSU Tigers use 2nd-half explosion to win big

PINE BLUFF, ARK. — Rushing off the field following a convincing victory, a group of Jackson State assistant coaches pointed at a reporter and screamed: "We won this one," they said, "for Big Coach!"

With coach Rick Comegy absent from the sideline, Jackson State scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to rout Arkansas-Pine Bluff 52-30 Saturday, winning its first true road match of the season. Said running back Alfred Moreland: "It was all for Coach Comegy."

As sweet as the victory was, the Tigers still fell short of their ultimate goal - the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game - when Alabama State beat Southern University later Saturday.

DE Robinson redeems himself in major way

PINE BLUFF, ARK. — Donavan Robinson had some making up to do. And Saturday, he did it. The JSU defensive end had nine tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss in Jackson State's 52-30 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, trying his best to wash away lingering thoughts of last week's flag that sealed the Tigers' loss at Alabama State. Said Robinson with a big smile: "I had to make up for last week." Consider it done.

Jalil Johnson and Jackson State's secondary tried their best to defend Arkansas-Pine Bluff's prolific receiver, Raymond Webber. Despite the 52-30 victory Saturday, they failed in slowing the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior. Webber finished with 10 catches for 140 yards and drew two pass interference penalties. One thing missing from those stats? Touchdowns. He had none. And for Johnson and the rest of the JSU secondary, that was a plus.

"He's a good receiver," Johnson said, "but I felt like I am one of the best corners in the conference so I had to prove it."
