BIRMINGHAM, Alabama --It was a parade in downtown Birmingham that Miles College football fans have been waiting for some time. Today the school celebrated it's first ever SIAC football championship.
"I'm so proud and blessed. I'm so elated that Miles College one of my favorites, has made it," Evelyn Toney, a Miles fan, said. Many of these supporters have suffered through a number of losing seasons backing the Golden Bears.
"It means a lot. It's been years. One and nothing. One and eleven. Now we are seven and four and the championship, it means a lot," Reed Jesse, a Miles fan, said.
First year coach Reginal Ruffin turned the football team into a championship squad. The coach had confidence in his players.

The Golden Bears stunned Albany State for a 20-17 victory on Patton Chambers’ 29-yard field goal with nine seconds left for a 20-17 victory at Clark Atlanta’s Panther Stadium. Miles (7-4) earned its first SIAC championship and knocked Albany State (8-3) out of contention for its seventh consecutive bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
It’s the first time since 2000 that either Albany State or Tuskegee didn’t win the SIAC. With only four winning seasons since 1963 and a 3-8 record in 2010, Miles seemed like an unlikely candidate to break through. But first-year coach Reginald Ruffin led Miles to the West division championship and won the league’s first championship game.
“When I interviewed for the job, we didn’t talk about just competing,” Ruffin said. “We talked about winning, and winning right now.”

Stanley Jennings leads Albany State to brink of SIAC title
QB Stanley Jennings |
“That was one thing I lacked, being a great vocal leader,” said Jennings, a former Marietta High School standout. “I got a little help from Coach [Uyl] Joyner [the offensive coordinator]. He was telling me that everybody is going to look at me because I am the quarterback.”
Eventually Jennings started speaking up, the Golden Rams picked up their play and now they are in position to win another SIAC title. East division champion Albany State (8-2, 6-1 SIAC) faces Miles (6-4, 5-2) in the inaugural SIAC championship game Saturday at Clark Atlanta.
The Golden Rams are seeking their sixth SIAC title in 12 seasons under coach Mike White. A victory Saturday also likely would assure Albany State of its eighth consecutive berth in the Division II playoffs when bids are announced Sunday.

Stillman Tigers falls in close one against Miles Golden Bears
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Oct.27, 2011) | The Miles College Golden Bears squeaked by rival Stillman College to claim the Southern Intercollegeate Athletic Conference Western Division title with a 9-7 victory, one year after going 3-8 and finishing in near the bottom in the conference.
The Golden Bears (6-3) won with a suffocating defense, holding the Tigers (6-3) to just 210 yards of offense and forcing three interceptions, including two in the fourth quarter. They also got just enough offense, led by quarterback David Thomas who went 17 of 25 for 180 yards.
“It’s been a long time coming for Miles College,” first-year coach Reginald Ruffin said. “I asked these guys to just to buy, and these guys have bought in.”
The Golden Bears got off to a fast start, starting the game with a trick play. Quarterback David Thomas threw a 50-yard bomb to D.J. Fife on a flea-flicker pass on the first play from scrimmage. Several plays later, running back Jordan Lewis took a pitch in from four yards out for the score, diving into the end zone to cap off the scoring drive. The extra point was blocked.

SIAC West on line when Stillman meets rival Miles
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama | Trying to bounce back from its worst loss of the season, the Stillman College football team remains in contention for a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference division title.
“If I win, I win the West,” said Teddy Keaton, Stillman's first-year head coach. “If Miles wins, they win the West. This game is bigger than it's ever been. It's the first time that both of these schools have got a chance to play for the SIAC championship. That's huge for both programs. They're both under new leadership. I have great respect for coach (Reginald) Ruffin and the job he's done with his team up there. It's going to be a battle. They have some weapons. They've been playing really good football over the course of the last three or four weeks.
"We've got a lot of kids on our team from Birmingham. They have a lot of kids on their team from Tuscaloosa. So there's a lot of rivalry, a lot of bragging rights that goes into it.”
Last Week: Stillman Tigers took an ole fashion beatdown at FVSU Homecoming.

Stillman, UWA dream of postseason
Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- Teddy Keaton and Will Hall, a couple of young, enthusiastic head coaches, are preparing their football teams to face in-state rivals Thursday.
If Keaton's Stillman Tigers and Hall's West Alabama Tigers win, they'll enhance their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Division II playoffs. Stillman and UWA are ranked among the top 10 in Super Region Two. Both coaches know that the top six teams qualify, and both know that the best way to get there is to keep winning.
Hall said the top two teams in the region get byes for the first playoff round. The No. 3 seed opens against No. 6, and No. 4 will play No. 5.
Stillman plays at home Thursday, facing Miles College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. Both teams are 4-1 in league play, and the winner claims the West Division championship.
“That's how big this game is,” Keaton said.

Miles 19, Clark Atlanta 16
Atlanta, Georgia -- A homecoming victory for Clark Atlanta University in front of a crowd of more than 20,000, was conceivable until Miles College’s kicker Patton Chambers’ 18-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in the game lifted the Golden Bears over CAU 19-16 Saturday at Panther Stadium.
Anderson Davis put Clark Atlanta (2-4, SIAC 2-2) on the board first with a three-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which gave the Panthers a slim advantage. Miles (3-3, SIAC 2-1) then tied the game with its own one-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback David Thomas. A 7-7 tie remained at the half.
Running back Rashad Lewis’ three-yard run put the Panthers ahead 13-6, before a Miles safety by Alexander Morris made it a four-point game, 13-9, in the third quarter.
Miles struck early in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard pass from David Thomas to K.C. Logan that gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the game at 16-13. But the Panthers orchestrated a 64-yard drive on its next possession which led to a Kemuel Lawrence 30-yard field goal conversion that knotted the game at 16.
A 38-yard reception by Vondragu Hudson moved the Golden Bears to the Panthers four-yard line with 58 seconds remaining, and Chambers’ chip shot from the one-yard sealed the road win for Miles.

Benedict drops OT game to Miles
AUGUSTA, Georgia - A new coach brought some new enthusiasm for the Benedict College Tigers football team, but some old demons were too much to overcome as Mile College defeated Benedict 20-14 in overtime Saturday at Lucy Laney Memorial Stadium in the annual Augusta City Classic.
Miles drove 75 yards on 11 plays to score on a 1-yard run by Jordan Lewis with one minute left on the clock to cut Benedict's lead to 14-12. Lewis got the call again on the two-point conversion to tie the game. The key play on that drive was a 33-yard pass from David Thomas to Jerromy Mardis on fourth down and eight on their final drive in regulation.
The Tigers got the ball first in overtime, but quarterback Simeon Kelley fumbled the exchange on the second play in overtime, turning the ball back over to the Golden Bears.
On Miles' possession, Lewis carried the ball on all five plays, and ran in from one-yard out to seal the victory for the Golden Bears. Miles improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC.

UWG Wolves hang on to win No. 1 over Miles
Carrollton, GA - The first win can be the hardest, and the University of West Georgia football team took care of win No. 1 on the 2011 campaign with a 23-20 triumph over Miles College on Thursday evening at University Stadium.
The Wolves (1-1) held on against a late surge from the Golden Bears (1-2) for what UWG coach Daryl Dickey hopes is the first win of many this fall.
“It will be a lot easier to go to work and coach with a win under your belt. There’s no question about that. We’ve got to develop a habit of winning, and you can’t do that unless you start winning. I’m proud of our kids [Thursday]. They fought hard and found a way to stretch it out at the end with enough cushion that we were going to win the ball game,” Dickey said.
The first win was especially sweet for junior quarterback Emmanuel Taylor, who was playing his first game at University Stadium.

Morehouse rolls to 47-9 win over Miles in Labor Day Golden Classic
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- By the start of the third quarter, the light rain falling on the turf at Legion Field had turned into a downpour. Tropical Storm Lee was announcing its presence at the fifth Labor Day Golden Classic, but Morehouse College had already stolen the show.
The Maroon Tigers jumped all over Miles College from the start, grabbing a 23-point halftime lead and running away with a 47-9 victory Sunday to spoil Reginald Ruffin's debut as Golden Bears' head coach.
"I put all the blame on myself," said Ruffin, who came to Miles after five years as the defensive coordinator at Tuskegee. "I didn't have the guys ready to play. I thought we were ready to play, but unfortunately we weren't. I'm just very disappointed in myself, and I apologize to my coaches, I apologize to my team for not having them ready to play."
Led by junior quarterback Byron Ingram's two rushing touchdowns and one through the air, Morehouse encountered minimal resistance on its way to 427 yards of total ...

Miles ultimate weapon: Jordan Lewis gives Golden Bears explosive running threat
FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- As far as anyone knows, scientists have not begun cloning humans. But if they started the practice today, Miles head football coach Reginald Ruffin knows he would love to clone senior running back Jordan Lewis.
"Jordan Lewis is a tough football player, mentally and physically," said Ruffin, entering his first season at Miles. "If I had more Jordan Lewises, we'd be a really good football team. Nothing gets to him. The guy's got heart. He's a grinder. That's what I love about him."
Lewis, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound junior from Fairfield High School, rushed for a modest 307 yards and four touchdowns for the Golden Bears in 2010. But this season he is expected to blossom into one of the team's explosive offensive weapons. He was named to the preseason All-SIAC second team offense.

Lane drops 18th straight game to Miles
Lane College head coach Derrick Burroughs didn't mince words after the Dragons lost their homecoming game, 20-6, to Miles College at Lane Field on Saturday.
The bottom line ... we are not very good, but it won't always be like that," Burroughs said. "Today, I saw what I had heard before I took the job, that (Lane football) was very undisciplined, and I would rather go 0-10 with guys who want to be here."
Leading 7-0 at intermission, Miles put together back-to-back scoring drives to open the second half giving the Golden Bears a 20-0 lead, using 10 plays total to drive 47 and 36 yards, respectively.

Home Sweet Home: Albany State Rams rip Miles College in Homecoming game
ALBANY, GA — There was something special in the air at Albany State University Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Maybe it was the cloud of smoke rising from the parking lot, where new and old friends laughed and tailgated together to their heart’s content. Maybe it was the blare of trumpets, echoing from ASU’s and Miles’ bands as they competed for pride and the crowd’s attention.
Or maybe it was a little bit of magic emanating from the fingertips of Rams quarterback Stanley Jennings as he hit receivers for touchdowns — again and again. Whatever the reason, it was a homecoming to remember for Albany State fans as the Rams defeated Miles, 34-7, in front of a capacity crowd to move to No. 1 in the SIAC after Morehouse lost to Tuskegee, 31-15.
ALBANY, GA (WALB) – One of the highlights for thousands in town this weekend and locals is the ASU Homecoming Parade. The parade didn't disappoint it had more music, dance, and floats. "This is my first Homecoming in all of these years," said Clano Stephens. Stephens graduated with the class of 1931. This is his first homecoming, he was the grand marshal.
"I'm enjoying this one immensely it's been really good," said Stephens.
Now 98-years-old he is back to help the university celebrate its 107 year history. "Oh everything has changed since then, but we had a good time, and where the president's office is now we built that when I was here," said Stephens. He graduated from what was Georgia Normal and Agricultural College 85-years ago.

Corcordia adds win notch over Miles
SELMA, AL — Concordia College weathered two rain showers, a lightning delay and a host of injuries to win its home opener, 52-20 over Miles College on Saturday.
After trading scores — and leads — in the first half, Concordia shut out the Bears in the second half and racked up four touchdowns to win going away. “We know we can play at a high level,” Concordia quarterback T’chelipo Woods, said. “We were playing fast and executed. We hit on all cylinders.”
Hornets coach Shepherd Skanes was less enthusiastic, but happy with the win.
“I wanted them to close it out,” Skanes said. “We had West Georgia (last week), but we left some points out on the grass. They closed it out today, and did a good job.”

“I wanted them to close it out,” Skanes said. “We had West Georgia (last week), but we left some points out on the grass. They closed it out today, and did a good job.”

Miles beats Stillman its first play of overtime
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Needing one scoring play to win, the Miles College Golden Bears didn’t hesitate. Senior quarterback Carlton Hill threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Breante Allen on the Bears’ first play in overtime, giving Miles a 35-29 victory over Stillman College in the Labor Day Golden Classic.
“The coaches said we were going to end it,” Allen said. “It ain’t no time to be babies. They told me to suck up my (ankle) injury, and I delivered for them. I was happy that they had that much faith in me.”
Allen ran a hitch-and-go pattern along the right sideline. Hill faked a throw, and Allen was able to run free to make the catch in the end zone. “I lost the ball in the lights,” Allen said. “I just said, “God, please just let me catch it,’ and I caught it.” Hill completed 19 of 29 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns.

Miles still looking for offense from offensive guru Billy Joe
Miles football coach Billy Joe has the reputation of an offensive mastermind, built mainly during an 11-year stint at Florida A&M when he employed what he dubbed the "Gulf Coast Offense." It is Joe's version of the spread attack and FAMU had great success running it. The Rattlers were one of the highest-scoring teams in the nation in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision during his tenure.
But in Joe's first two years at Miles, his offense has yet to take flight. The Golden Bears averaged only 10.8 points per game in his first season in 2008 and only 16.4 points in 2009. Predictably, Miles suffered through losing seasons, compiling records of 2-8 and 4-7.
