Reports: Lawrence Kershaw top candidate for Fayetteville State football coaching job

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina  --  Lawrence Kershaw, Florida A&M's former offensive coordinator, has emerged as the top candidate to become Fayetteville State University's next head football coach, but hasn't been offered the job, according to the school's athletic director.

However, the school has called a special meeting of the Board of Trustees for Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chancellor's Conference room to discuss a closed-session item. The hiring of a football coach would require a vote of the trustees.

Kershaw was on the FSU campus Monday and attended the school's basketball game against Bowie State. The Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat newspaper reported Monday in a story about Florida A&M's new head coach, Earl Holmes, that Kershaw was going to be Fayetteville State's next head coach.

And Aaron Taylor, son of former Florida A&M head coach Joe Taylor, posted on his Facebook page that he will be coming to Fayetteville to join Kershaw's staff. Taylor served as running backs coach for the A&M Rattlers the last four years.

FSU athletic director Edward McLean denied that Monday evening.
