Gold Rush continue mastery of NCAA Division I Nicholls
It was the fourth consecutive year that the Gold Rush (3-1), ranked third nationally, defeated the Colonels (2-7). The dual match was scored using NAIA rules.
Gabriel Niculescu and Shaikh Abdullah won in doubles and singles for XULA. Niculescu and Samir Chikhaouigave the Gold Rush a 3-0 lead with an 8-5 victory against Moritz Borges and Nestor Giribet Lopez at No. 3 doubles, then Niculescu made it 4-0 when he beat Eduardo Marino 6-3, 6-0 on the fourth singles court.
Abdullah clinched on the third singles court with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Giribet Lopez. Abdullah and Santiago Perez scored the first point of the dual with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles against Oleksandr Podgursky and Tobias Lentz.
The No. 2 doubles team of Chris Anders and Pierre Andrieu scored the other point in an 8-3 victory against Marino and Alvaro Barranco.
XULA led in three of the four unfinished singles matches. The dual lasted slightly less than three hours and was contested under sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s.
XULA has won three consecutive duals and allowed only one point since an opening loss to South Alabama. Nicholls is 0-5 on the road.
XULA's men and women will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to play William Carey at 1 p.m. Friday on Carey's campus. Starting time was pushed up one hour. XULA's women are ranked third in the NAIA, William Carey's women are ninth, and its men are 11th.

Rush earn quick rematch with Panthers in postseason
The Gold Rush (17-13) and the Panthers (11-18) will meet at 11 a.m. EST Friday in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at Jacksonville, Fla. The venue will be the Adams-Jenkins Sports and Music Complex (1859 Kings Road, zip code 32209) at Edward Waters College.
XULA is seeded fourth, and Philander is fifth.
XULA head coach Alfred Williams isn't a fan of playing the same opponent in consecutive games, but he's certain of what his team must do to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
"We have to be able to match Philander Smith's toughness, and we have to able to execute," Williams said. "Philander is a scrappy, tough, defensive-minded team. They will make adjustments after Monday's game."
Monday's game was one of XULA's best of the season: a 93-76 home victory. William Loyd and Ed Carter scored 27 points apiece for the Gold Rush, and Carter made eight 3s to tie the XULA game record.
There have been other highlights this season — including Rayshawn Mart's last-second scores in victories against William Carey, Virgin Islands and Campbellsville — but this year's Gold Rush team enters the postseason with five fewer victories than it had a year ago. Last season the Gold Rush finished 24-9, shared the GCAC regular-season championship with Dillard, lost to the Bleu Devils in the GCAC Tournament final, then earned an at-large bid to the NAIA Division I National Championship tournament.
"This has been a roller coaster season that didn't quite meet expectations," Williams said. "But we are excited about going to the conference tournament with some momentum and think we can keep it going. Hopefully we have learned from our setbacks during the regular season. I really feel that we haven't peaked yet — we haven't played our best basketball yet."
The XULA men may be on the right track. They closed the regular season with three straight double-digit home victories against GCAC opponents. Conversely, the Gold Rush were 1-5 against the three teams ahead of them in the conference standings: Tougaloo (0-2), Talladega (0-2) and Dillard (1-1).
Loyd, a 6-foot-5 junior forward from Baton Rouge, La., leads the Gold Rush with 13.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Mart (6-3 sophomore guard, Houma, La.) averages 12.3 points, Carter (6-1 sophomore guard, Detroit) averages 10.0, and Jeff Dixon (6-2 senior guard, New Orleans) averages 9.8.
The XULA-Philander Smith winner will play top-seeded Tougaloo (ranked fourth nationally) or eighth-seeded Rust in the semifinals at 7 p.m. EST Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. EST Sunday. The tournament champion will receive the GCAC's automatic bid to the national tournament March 20-26 at Kansas City, Mo.
If the Gold Rush win the GCAC Tournament, it will be a major drought-breaker. The XULA men have not won this event since it beat SUNO 81-66 in the final on March 2, 1996, at Mobile, Ala.

Top-seeded Nuggets to meet SUNO at 5 p.m. EST Friday
The GCAC announced pairings, venues and times late Tuesday. Top-seeded XULA (23-6) and eighth-seeded SUNO (6-22) will play in the Adams-Jenkins Sports and Music Complex (1859 Kings Road, zip code 32209) at Edward Waters College.
XULA clinched a tie for the GCAC regular-season championship with a 55-54 home victory last week against SUNO, then won it outright Monday with a 66-57 home victory against Philander Smith. The championship is the Gold Nuggets' 30th of the Title IX era and their first in the GCAC regular season since 2012-13.
"We've really been a work in progress the whole year," 20th-year head coach Bo Browder said. "I felt like we had a good team on opening night, and it looked like our chemistry kept getting better as the season went along. I think we surprised a lot of people, but we're not surprised because we knew about the kind of team we would have if we worked hard and played together."
Although SUNO finished 12 games behind XULA in the regular-season standings, the Gold Nuggets needed fourth-quarter rallies to beat the Lady Knights twice this year. In addition to last week's one-point decision, XULA won 45-40 at SUNO Jan. 28.
Jas Hill, a 5-foot-7 junior guard/forward from Mobile, Ala., leads the Gold Nuggets in scoring with 15.0 points per game. Essence Wells (5-10 junior guard, Irving, Texas) averages 8.8 points, and Kyla Duncan (5-10 freshman forward, Metairie, La.) averages 6.6. Mikayla Bates (5-7 senior guard, Baton Rouge, La.) leads the Nuggets with 5.4 rebounds per game and 51 steals.
The Gold Nuggets have made 186 3-pointers, breaking the school season record of 167 set in 2003-04 and tied in 2011-12.
The XULA-SUNO winner will meet fourth-seeded Edward Waters or fifth-seeded Philander Smith in the semifinals at 5 p.m. EST Saturday. The championship game will tip off at 2 p.m. EST Sunday. The tournament champion will receive the GCAC's automatic bid to the NAIA Division I National Championship March 13-19 at Billings, Mont.
