Abdellatif, Price run into record books at UNO Opener
It was the first meet of the season for the XULA distance runners.
Abdellatif ran 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 25.4 seconds in his collegiate debut. It's the seventh-fastest time by a Gold Rush runner at that distance — records date to 2002 — and the second best by a freshman. He finished 17th overall in the race.
Price, a senior and a two-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference individual champion, ran 4,000 meters in 16:47.6. It's the fifth-fastest time by a Gold Nugget at that distance. Price placed 17th in the women's race.
Both XULA teams placed sixth in team scoring.
Also running for the Gold Rush were Ahmad Wilson (39th place, 18:33.3), Ghassan Alansi (42nd, 20:18.2), Devin Macklin-Jackson (43rd, 20:24.0) and Jordan Ashmore (44th, 21:11.8).
The Gold Nuggets' other runners were Ky'Reon McBride (31st, 20:17.3), Maliya Vaughan(33rd, 21:10.0), Alexis Milton (36th, 22:29.3) and Hajjia Mohammed (37th, 22.46.5).
The University of New Orleans men and the Tulane women won the team titles.
Next for the Rush and Nuggets will be the Allstate Sugar Bowl Festival at NOLA's City Park Sept. 14. The men's race will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women at 8:30. Both races will be 5Ks.

XULA beats Indiana Tech for 6th win in last 7 matches
It was the first time in eight years that the Gold Nuggets won despite hitting worse than .100.
XULA and Point, the only teams to go 2-0 during the tournament's first day, will meet at noon Saturday at the Convocation Center. XULA and Florida Memorial will conclude the Blastoff with a 6 p.m. match.
XULA's defense compensated for its offensive deficiencies, limiting the Warriors to a hitting percentage of .069 — the sixth time this season a XULA opponent hit worse than .100 — and forcing them into 38 attack errors.
XULA's Kayla Black had 13 kills and 10 digs — her sixth double-double of the season — and tacked on two aces and a block. Vivica Price-Spraggins had 11 kills, six blocks and three aces, Eva Le Guillou had 34 assists, nine digs and four blocks, and Si Si Mitchell had 21 digs.
Also providing defense for the Gold Nuggets were Ema Causevic with nine digs and three blocks and Taylor McGee with a career-high eight digs.
XULA (7-3) has won six of its last seven matches. Indiana Tech (5-1) lost for the first time this season.
Olivia Niekamp had 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks for Indiana Tech. Calista Helinski had 10 kills and three blocks, and Madeline MacDonald had 22 digs.
A Price-Spraggins kill clinched a first set in which XULA trailed 7-1 and 17-12. The Gold Nuggets trailed 12-10 in the second set but took the lead for good, 23-22, when Price-Spraggins and Black combined for a block. Maya Smith ended that set with a kill.
Indiana Tech rallied from 13-6 and 16-11 deficits to win the third set, but an early 5-1 run put XULA ahead to stay in the fourth. Black had five kills and Price-Spraggins three blocks in the final set, and Price-Spraggins ended the match with a kill.
Indiana Tech produced advantages of 49-39 in kills and 74-63 in digs, but the Gold Nuggets had 12 fewer attack errors.
XULA's seven victories are its most ever in August. The 2013 team held the previous mark of five.
Also Saturday, Indiana Tech will play Mobile at 10 a.m. and Point at 4 p.m. Mobile will play Florida Memorial at 2 p.m.

Nuggets blast off with 3-set opening win vs. Mobile
The Gold Nuggets' next match will start at 6 p.m. Friday against Indiana Tech.
Ema Causevic led XULA (6-3) with season highs of 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. The junior also had 11 digs, four blocks and two aces.
The Nuggets' Kayla Black produced her team-leading fifth double-double of the season — 11 kills and 12 digs. Black hit .320.
Vivica Price-Spraggins hit .538 with eight kills and two blocks for XULA. Maya Smith had five kills and six blocks, Si Si Mitchell had two aces and 12 digs, Eva Le Guillou had 39 assists and two aces, and Jaida Dowd had six kills.
Dowd had four kills to rally XULA from a 6-0 second-set deficit.
"I thought we served tough," XULA head coach Pat Kendrick said, "and our block defense was good."
Abigail Andrews and Rachel Hart had six kills apiece for the Rams (5-4), and Hart had three blocks.
"Xavier ran a good offense," Mobile head coach Jon Campbell said. "They had a nice quick tempo and were well balanced. They picked us apart."
XULA outhit Mobile .296 to .062 and produced advantages of 40-21 in assists, 4-1 in aces, 45-34 in digs and 8-4 in blocks.
XULA defeated Mobile for the first time since 2013. It was the Nuggets' first-ever three-set sweep of the Rams. Mobile leads the series 15-4.
