University of Arkansas Pine Bluff signs 17 student-athletes

The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff football program has announced the addition of 17 student-athletes (PDF) who have signed National Letters of Intent to play for UAPB. The list of signees consists of 11 high school prepsters and six junior college transfers. "We're pleased with the young men we were able to bring into our football program," said Arkansas-Pine Bluff Head Football Coach Monte Coleman."

"We feel like we did a great job of addressing our needs both offensively and defensively. Boosting our core of linebackers and defensive backs was one of our top priorities on defense. Offensively we wanted to add depth at wide receiver and our other skill positions." Coleman believes this year's recruiting class will bolster the Golden Lions attack on both sides of the ball next season and during the years to follow. Last season Arkansas-Pine Bluff concluded their 2009 campaign with a 5-5 overall record while going 3-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Arkansas-Monticello 27, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3

Arkansas-Pine Bluff had put together a couple of lengthy drives. Mickey Dean was finding small holes to dart through. And, most importantly, it was keeping ultra-dangerous Scott Buisson from finding creases to run or pass through. No, the first half of Saturday’s season-opener against Arkansas-Monticello didn’t go exactly as planned for the Golden Lions. But there were enough positives to go into halftime with upbeat spirits and a three-point lead. But that’s when time seemed to travel back to last year’s loss to the Boll Weevils, when UAPB lost its starting quarterback and a series of turnovers led to Buisson making big plays that eventually buried the Golden Lions.

Three touchdowns scored off UAPB mistakes — a roughing-the-punter penalty that continued a drive and two fumbles — led to 20 UAM points in the third quarter of an eventual 27-3 win for the Boll Weevils at Golden Lion Stadium. For UAPB coach Monte Coleman, it was proof that all the plays that turned games into disaster for his team last season are not yet out of their system. “What caused it to happen? I have no idea,” Coleman said. “That’s the most disappointing thing about it, because I know for a fact we’re a better football team than what we played tonight.”

UAPB Coleman targets offense in second recruiting class

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff offense ranked in the bottom half of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in several statistical categories last season. Considering that fact, finding players who can provide immediate offensive help was UAPB’s main focus this recruiting season. And when UAPB coach Monte Coleman announced his second recruiting class as coach on Wednesday, he feels most of those needs were addressed.

Eleven of the 17 players who signed national letters of intent on Wednesday are expected to play on the offensive side for the Golden Lions. That includes six wide receivers, two quarterbacks, two running backs and an offensive lineman. Another wide receiver signed a letter of intent at a ceremony at his school on Wednesday, but as of Wednesday evening, Coleman had not yet received it. “There is a focus on that part of the ball,” Coleman said. “We needed receivers, quarterbacks and offensive (linemen).”

UAPB’s emphasis wasn’t put toward the offensive line as much as when it signed 10 players to those positions last year but directed more toward players at the skill positions. The Golden Lions, who finished 3-9 in Coleman’s first season as coach, were eighth in the SWAC in scoring offense, ninth in total offense and 10th in passing offense.

UAPB Coleman finally gets to celebrate

PINE BLUFF, AR — Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman is an emotional guy, and he had trouble holding it in Saturday. Coleman earned his first victory as a head coach as UAPB beat Lincoln University of Missouri 42-0 before a homecoming crowd of 14,852 at Golden Lion Stadium in Pine Bluff. UAPB (1-7) had 394 yards of total offense and held Lincoln (2-6 ), an NCAA Division II school from Jefferson City, Mo., to seven first downs and 181 yards of offense.

“I’m not looking at their record or what division they’re in. We got beat early on by some Division II schools. It’s all relative,” Coleman said. “We needed a victory, and we came out and got us a victory.” Martell Mallett had 146 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries to lead UAPB. Mickey Dean, Jeremy Morrow and Kenneth Esaw also had rushing touchdowns. The sixth touchdown of the day, doubling UAPB’s total from the entire season, came on a 91-yard interception return by James Harrell with 59 seconds left.

SWAC coach gets official reprimand

UAPB coach apologizes for comments

PINE BLUFF - The Southwestern Athletic Conference won't come down hard on Monte Coleman after the first-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach publicly criticized game officials following UAPB's 21-10 loss to Jackson State last Saturday. SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said in a statement Wednesday that the conference would formally reprimand Coleman, adding that "with all athletic competitions, emotions do run high, but that does not condone the comments of Coach Coleman."

Coleman opened his postgame press session Saturday by criticizing referee Anthony Johnson for charging him a time-out during the fourth quarter. "Absolutely horrible,"Coleman said after the game. "Anthony Johnson, he needs to get a zero for this game. He wanted to cost me a time-out because I asked him a question." Coleman also attacked the crew for what he believed was an unnecessary roughing the passer penalty.

"This is the worst officiated game I've ever been a part of in my life,"Coleman said. "They should not get paid. They should be suspended. Every last one of them."

Moral victory prizes plentiful for Coleman, UAPB Lions

About 20 minutes after his team lost for the fifth straight time to start the season, Monte Coleman walked slowly into the team’s weight room inside the J. Thomas May Field House. He approached a pair of reporters and, trying to keep a tense moment light, said: “Another consolation prize, huh?” Consolation prizes have come in bunches for Coleman in his first season as coach of the Golden Lions, but perhaps no more so than during Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Alabama A&M in both teams’ Southwestern Conference opener.

UAPB senior QB Jonathan Moore is nursing a thumb injury that has impacted performance of the Lion's offense.

UAPB played what Coleman said was its best game of the season. Its defense held the conference’s third best offense to less than 300 total yards and intercepted three passes, which tied the highest total in a game this season. The Golden Lion offense, while it struggled to sustain drives throughout the game, was able to score three times after a defensive or special teams play provided them with good field position. But as this season moves into October and the halfway point of Coleman’s first season, he’s still looking for his first win — and those consolation prizes have become harder to accept.

UAPB Coach knows Turner’s path to excellence

UAPB Coach Monte Cole-man: "Senior linebacker Tim Turner is the unquestioned leader of the Golden Lions defense with 122 tackles a year ago."

PINE BLUFF, AK — Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman probably thought he had a pretty interesting sports history. It’s not every day a young man grows up with his eye on other sports, hardly plays high school football, never receives a recruiting letter and yet goes on to become a standout linebacker in college and, later, the NFL. Yet for all the odd little bumps and curves that led Coleman to stardom, he’s not the only member of the UAPB football program who has followed that path... at least up through college.

A preseason All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection who led UAPB with 122 tackles a year ago, senior linebacker Tim Turner is the unquestioned leader of the Golden Lions defense. His speed — Coleman said he can run a 4. 5-second 40-yard dash — and 6-1, 220-pound size fit the ideal college linebacker mold, enough so that the New York Giants had a scout in Pine Bluff last Friday to do some firsthand observation.

Let the Monte Coleman era begin. Coleman’s tenure officially starts tonight when the Golden Lions open the 2008 season against the University of Arkansas at Monticello at 6 p.m.

“Feels like Christmas,” Coleman said of his head coaching debut. “Can’t wait for the next morning.” Coleman hopes to give a present to all Golden Lion fans by beating the Boll Weevils. And while UAM is a Division-II opponent, Coleman acknowledged that a victory won’t come easy for his squad.

SWAC: In with the new

University of Arkansas Pine Bluff head football coach Monte Coleman

Fresh faces, schedule changes could impact SWAC

So many new quarterbacks. Another crop of new coaches. And a return to the seven-game format, along with a new tweak to the master schedule. This is Southwestern Athletic Conference football 2008.

New quarterbacks

Southern, with SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Bryant Lee, and Prairie View, with Mark Spivey getting a sixth season of eligibility for a medical hardship after going 5-1 as a starter in the Panthers’ last six games, are the two known, successful constants. The rest of the conference spent the spring and preseason camp and this week evaluating quarterbacks.

Inside UAPB Camp

The excitement is back at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. This is the first year for head coach Monte Coleman and you can see the difference in practice. Defensively, the Golden Lions should be solid with Stewart Franks, Kevin Thornton, Jared Dorn, Ledarius Anthony, and Tim Turner all returning from last season.

Offensively, returning starters include Jonathon Moore at quarterback, Mickey Dean, and Martell Mallet at the running back spot. The Offensive line should be solid and there are high expectations for the upcoming season.

UAPB Report: Lions have bad luck with WRs

In less than two weeks, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions went from looking for a secondary receiver to complement senior Bruce Peters to looking for a secondary receiver, period. Senior Ryan Watley was lost for the season last week after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in practice. Then Tuesday, the NCAA informed Golden Lions offensive coordinator / academic liaison Jonathan Cannon that freshman wideout Gionni Harris would be ineligible for the 2008 season.

Harris, who helped lead Fayetteville to the Class 7 A state title in 2007, was considered one of the Golden Lions' quicker receiving prospects. Coach Monte Coleman said one of the test scores used to admit Harris to the university came from an exam not taken on one of the national testing days. Harris can remain as a student at UAPB and can have four years of eligibility starting next season if he meets the school's academic requirements.

UAPB Poised For Success Under Coleman

The Monte Coleman era has begun at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Defensively, the Lions return 8 starters that could be the reason they go back to Birmingham, AL for the SWAC championship. Offensively, senior Jonathon Moore will lead the Lions this season. They're offensive line averages over 350 pounds and that's good news for running backs Martell Mallet and Mickey Dean.

UAPB Coleman glad to be in heat and pads

Friday was Monte Coleman’s kind of day. The sun was shining and he was on the football field. After two days of rain and cooler temperatures brought a reprieve from the nearly triple-digit temperatures to his team, Coleman was glad to see the mercury rising Friday.

“We needed the heat,” Coleman said. “Even though we play mostly night games, to condition in the heat gives you that extra endurance. Yesterday was a good practice day. Guys flew around. It gave them a break because it wasn’t real hot, which allowed them to run to the football.” Though Friday was the Golden Lions first day in full pads, the team still has a few players struggling with injuries. Freshman receiver Gionni Harris was noticeably limping during Friday’s practice, the result of a hamstring injury.

“We want to be patient with his injury. We don’t want it reaccuring,” Coleman said.

Unweathered: UAPB can't stop the rain; rain doesn't stop practice

Even Arkansas-Pine Bluff coach Monte Coleman couldn’t stop mother nature. The man who made a living stopping NFL running backs couldn’t stop the rain. With his team fully entrenched in a practice Wednesday afternoon, the skies opened up. Rain and lightning poured out and the Golden Lions were forced inside. UAPB doesn’t have an indoor practice facilty, so the Golden Lions were forced to halt practice until the inclement weather subsided.

But Coleman, UAPB’s first-year head coach and fifth-year defensive coordinator, refused to blame it on the rain.

“The weather is part of it,” the former Washington Redskin said. “If we had a game, we would have to be out in it. (The weather) is not going to hinder us. We got 100 percent when we stepped on that practice field.”

UAPB Golden Lions hold first practice

While Monte Coleman wasn’t in a hurry Monday, he wanted his team to be. In UAPB’s first practice of the season, Coleman, the team’s defensive coordinator and first-year head coach, was looking for one main component from his players: hustle. On a day to test his players conditioning and get his players implemented into the grind of football, Coleman was looking for those who would bust it from drill to drill.

“That’s about all I was looking for,” Coleman said. “We’re going to make mistakes. The young guys don’t know the plays, but they can hustle.”

That’s exactly what the Golden Lions did in the morning practice. Starting at 8:15 Monday morning, UAPB’s first session of the season was a conditioning test. Each player had to run 20 100-yard dashes. On the squad of more than 80-players not one person passed out our quit running. Every player completed it.

UAPB ready to put its newly added facilities to use

Expect to see some positively bug-eyed college football players when the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions report for their first official practice this morning at Golden Lion Stadium.

Many of them will be getting their first look at UAPB's new 27,000-square foot field house, one that features ample locker room space for home and visiting teams, a war room for the coaching staff, a new weight facility, offices for each coach and a training room complete with a hydrotherapy pool.

The team will spend the first two weeks practicing inside Golden Lion Stadium to let the grass take hold on a new practice field located behind the visitors stands. "I think some of the guys may cry, "first-year Golden Lions Coach Monte Coleman said.

Coleman Preaches Success at UAPB

Photo: UAPB Golden Lions first year head coach Monte Coleman.

(Click here to see UAPB's two-deep depth chart.)

Changes are in the mix for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions. The Golden Lions' successful recruiting class and eight returning starters will be the beginnings for new head coach Monte Coleman. Coleman is the same retired Washington Redskin linebacker who won three Super Bowl rings and played in the National Football League for 16 seasons.

Upon retirement, Coleman said he was denying himself of his true calling. As legendary as he's become in the sport that he now coaches, Coleman is also a prominent minister in the Assemblies of God denomination. "I was actually coming back to Pine Bluff to be a minister, then an opportunity here became available and I came on board," Coleman said.

"My first hope is for winning football games. I'm not used to losing. I especially want to win when I'm on the football field, but it takes players being disciplined. As a football team, if we put discipline in every thing we do, we can have some major accomplishments."

New Era for Monte Coleman, UAPB Golden Lions

A new era has begun at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Former Washington Redskins, National Football League veteran linebacker Monte Coleman will begin his tenure as head football coach of the Golden Lions. Coleman is no stranger to Pine Bluff, having lived there in his youth and assisted former Golden Lions coaches after his retirement. Coleman won three Super Bowl rings with the Redskins in 16 seasons and upon his retirement entered the ministry.

Holding a Bible in one hand and a whistle in the other, figuratively speaking, Coleman plans to create strong Christian young men who win with heart and determination.

“My first hope is for winning football games — I’m not used to losing,” Coleman said. “I especially want to win when I’m on the football field, but it takes players being disciplined. As a football team, if we put discipline in everything we do, we can have some major accomplishments.”
