Southern Heritage Classic: Jackson State rallies to win shootout over Tennessee State

JSU's Therriault MVP after throwing three TDs

Memphis, TN - The way Tennessee State and Jackson State were marching up and down the field in the first half of Saturday’s Southern Heritage Classic, JSU coach Rick Comegy was ready to pull out the Dramamine.

Fortunately, the Tigers defense settled down in the second half and JSU managed to erase a 24-21 halftime deficit to beat TSU, 35-29, in front of 43,532 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. “What a see-saw,” Comegy said. “I think I was getting motion sickness it was so up and down. I’m glad we came out with the win.”

The win is JSU’s (2-0) second straight over TSU after dropping the previous seven meetings. Like most of their meetings, this one came down to the wire. JSU led 28-26 and was hoping to take some time off the clock when it took over from its own 11 with 6:34 to play. But a 17-yard pass from Casey Therriault to Rico Richardson gave the Tigers some breathing room.

A 22-yard strike to Keenan Tillman put the Tigers in TSU territory at the 41. That set up a 39-yard run by running back Tommy Gooden, who was tripped up at the 2-yard line.

Air Raid returns

Rico Richardson spiked the ball into the Liberty Bowl Stadium turf, the Sonic Boom blasted their horns and Jackson State had a second straight win in the Southern Heritage Classic.

Richardson's 21-yard touchdown pass from scrambling quarterback Casey Therriault in the final minutes sealed Jackson State's 35-29 win over Tennessee on Saturday night.

The touchdown toss gave JSU a nine-point advantage with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left and capped quite an offensive performance from a unit that struggled just last week against tiny Concordia College.

Behind a rebuilt offensive line - featuring two new starters - Therriault threw for 337 yards and three scores, and the Tigers had two running backs, Tommy Gooden and B.J. Lee, break 65 yards as they rolled up a whopping 477 yards of offense.

Jackson State defeats Tennessee State University in wild game

MEMPHIS, TN — After winning seven straight in the series, Tennessee State has now lost twice in a row to Jackson State after Saturday’s 35-29 defeat. A crowd of 43,532 at the 22nd annual Southern Heritage Classic watched Jackson State rally in the second half and then TSU make a late comeback attempt at the Liberty Bowl.

“What a seesaw,” Jackson State Coach Rick Comegy said. “I think I was getting motion sickness it was so up and down.”

Football Tour: Jackson State motivated despite setback

Jackson, MS - Jackson State has won a whopping 16 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships.

With Walter Payton Award candidate quarterback Casey Therriault and what figures to be a stingy Tigers' defense, JSU was primed to make a run at another league title in its upcoming 100th season of football. But last month, the school learned that both JSU and Southern University are banned from competing for the SWAC title because of low Academic Progress Rate scores.

The football team's score of 897 was less than the required 900, marking the third straight year the program has failed to reach 900. That led to the Tigers being banned from postseason play.

Nevertheless, that hasn't dampened the Tigers' enthusiasm for the 2011 season which begins Sept. 3 against Concordia College-Selma. "Sometimes, you've got to take the hand that's dealt," coach Rick Comegy said. "That hand's been dealt and the kids understand that and we're not sitting around.

JSU Tigers' Smith trying to overcome injury

Jackson, MS - Jabril Smith yanks back his left sock. There's no need to point at the 4-inch long, 1-inch wide stomach-churning scar he exposes.

Streaking along the outside of his left leg, just below his ankle and just above his foot, the discolored mark only serves as an ugly reminder, a stain he wishes to forget but can't quite remove.

"I haven't looked at it in a while," the current Jackson State and former Callaway High kicker says. "It only bothers me every once in a while."

It pains him more mentally, maybe, than physically these days. After all, that broken leg kept him from, possibly, winning Jackson State a championship...

Lots of action in JSU's final scrimmage

Jackson, MS - This is what they came to see: Jackson State's pass-happy offense slinging completions and scoring touchdowns, the Tigers' defense sacking quarterbacks and causing turnovers. About 50 fans gathered Saturday for Jackson State's second and final scrimmage of fall camp. It didn't disappoint.

Quarterback Casey Therriault completed his first 12 passes, finished 13 of 16 for 202 yards and tossed two touchdowns.

It wasn't just offensive fireworks, though. CB Ryan Griffin, an incoming freshman, returned a bobbled option pitch 80 yards for a score. CB Anthony Johnson, seeing his first full speed action of camp, intercepted backup QB Dedric McDonald. The defense had three sacks and two tackles for loss, too.

Unshaken JSU's Therriault not fazed by preseason hype

Jackson, MS - One year ago, a transfer from Michigan was competing for the starting quarterback job at Jackson State. No one knew much about him - except that he had spent six months in jail a year earlier. Folks couldn't even pronounce his last name - it's Terry-oh, by the way. And fans didn't expect a whole lot - after all, he had started just one season in junior college.

Now, Casey Therriault has already been the focus of two stories on ESPN.com, and he's expected to be featured in a segment airing on the network later this year. He's the centerpiece of the 2011 team poster celebrating the 100th year of Tiger football, is on the Walter Payton Award watch list and is the preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference offensive player of the year.

Feel any different, Casey?

Comegy and QB build expectations

Jackson, MS - Jackson State coach Rick Comegy believes he’s going to have a good football team this season. And he’s not afraid to say so.

“We’ve got guys who are mature and we’ve got guys who can play ball,” said Comegy, who enters his fifth season with the Tigers. “This should be the kind of year where we show how football at Jackson State is played.”

Confidence abounds at Jackson State, which is coming off an 8-3 season.

Much of that bravado is due to the return of quarterback Casey Therriault, who is coming off one of the best passing seasons in school history. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior threw for 3,436 yards last season and tied a school record with 31 touchdowns passes. He also rushed for 10 touchdowns in his first season...

JSU Opens Fall Practice with a Bang

Coach Rick Comegy
Jackson, MS - A chance for the SWAC title might not be in play for Jackson State this season, but that's not slowing down the Tigers at all. JSU holding its first practice of the fall earlier today and from the start you could see plenty of excitement and energy from the group.

The Tigers are building off of last season's 8-3 performance and will be riding the arm of preseason Walter Payton Award watch list candidate Casey Therriault.

Head coach Rick Comegy says he expects an improved special teams unit and defense this season. He says this team is unified and doesn't have just one key player.

Five-a-Side: Jackson State's Casey Therriault

FCS Walter Payton Award
Jackson, MS - The timing would be impeccable if Jackson State senior quarterback Casey Therriault wins the 2011 Walter Payton Award.

This season marks the 25th anniversary of the most prestigious award in the FCS - the Heisman Trophy of the division which is presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.

The legendary Payton, of course, played at Jackson State, which this season is celebrating its 100th year of football. Of course, the Casey Therriault story isn't ordinary regardless.

It was just over two years ago that Therriault was released from jail, having served a six-month sentence for his minor part in a January 2008 incident in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., in which a 21-year-old man was killed at a bar and restaurant. At the time of the altercation, Therriault was home from junior college.

The man, who was intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level of 0.27, harassed one of Therriault's friends before the incident escalated to ...

Jackson State University names new athletics director

Jackson, MS - Jackson State University has named a seasoned athletics director and college administrator as its new athletics director.

Vivian L. Fuller, 56, will take the helm of Jackson State’s athletics program later this summer, just in time for the start of JSU’s celebration of 100 years of football.

“I’m excited to be a Tiger,” Fuller said.

“Jackson State has such a long and proud tradition; I look forward to honoring that tradition and helping our student athletes be the best they can be.

JSU President Carolyn Meyers announced Fuller’s appointment on July 20 before a large crowd of JSU fans inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center’s Sports Hall of Fame.

“Vivian Fuller’s leadership skills, along with her experience as an athlete, academician, and director of athletics at three institutions, make her the best choice for Jackson State University at this time.” Meyers said. “I’m very confident that she will be able to lead our athletics programs to prominence, ensuring that JSU student-athletes succeed on the field or court as well as in the classroom.”

Fuller comes to Jackson State University from Sojourner-Douglass College, where she serves as dean of the college’s Cambridge, Maryland campus. Before joining Sojourner-Douglass in 2003, Fuller spent more than a decade directing the athletics programs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Tennessee State University and Northeastern Illinois University.

When named AD at Tennessee State in 1997, Fuller became the first African-American woman to lead a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Athletics program with a football team. That team finished its first season under her leadership with a 9-3 record and won the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

Jackson’s State’s new AD is a nationally known expert on academic support programs for student-athletes, academic advising, women in sports and management and gender equity. She has testified before the U.S. Senate in congressional hearings on gender equity and minority participation in sports and has been involved in numerous NCAA committees including the Management Council, the Peer Review Committee, the Initial Eligibility Standards Committee, the Gender Equity Task Force and the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), for which she served as chairperson.

Fuller began her career in higher education at Bennett College in 1978 as the director of intramural and instructor of physical education. From 1984-87 she served as assistant director for advisement programs for student-athletes at North Carolina A&T, earning a promotion to assistant director of athletics. In 1987, she became associate director of intercollegiate athletics at Indiana University in Pennsylvania, where she was responsible for internal operations of the program and developing the academic component for student-athletes.

Fuller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Fayetteville State University in 1977, a Master’s of Education from the University of Idaho in 1978, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University in 1985.

Incoming Jackson State student ready for college life, football

Natchez, MS — Joseph Perry Jr. has wanted to build bridges and buildings ever since his days of tinkering with Legos. The Natchez High School Class of 2011 Valedictorian will attend Jackson State University in the fall to study civil engineering, a field on which he has been hooked since he was young.

“All my life I’ve liked the concept of putting things together,” Perry said. Perry said he chose Jackson State based on his academic passion, but he will not be neglecting his athletic passion in college — football. He will be a walk-on for the Tigers in the fall.

“I can’t wait to put some pads on and get on that field,” he said. Other universities offered Perry football scholarships, he said, but he accepted an academic scholarship at Jackson State because of the school’s engineering program. Perry graduated with a 4.1 GPA, showing a dedication to academics.

But the voluntary football workout in nearly triple-digit heat Wednesday proved his dedication to the game. Perry said he sometimes works out early mornings during the summer with the Natchez High football team to stay in shape for the fall.

Improvements planned as JSU takes over Miss. Veterans Stadium

Jackson, MS - Gone will be that ancient video board towering over the field and that puny broken one atop the opposite end zone. Upgrades are coming to those rickety elevators and that paint-chipped press box, too.

Jackson State fans will see a few noticeable differences at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium this fall, the first year the university is in control of the 60-year-old venue. Today, JSU takes ownership of the stadium from the Department of Finance and Administration for at least three years, according to a legislative bill passed in March. University officials said earlier this year they will pour $1.5 million to $3 million into the structure - most, if not all of those funds, coming from a legislative bond bill.

The worn press box will get a new paint job and the elevator to the press box and club levels will be renovated. But more importantly, JSU fans will see two new scoreboards when they enter the 60,000-seat stadium on Sept. 3 for the team's opener against Concordia College.

The stadium's outdated jumbotron is to be replaced with a massive virtual scoreboard that will more than double the size of the current video screen.

JSU Tiger Nation learning to live with SWAC title ban

Jackson, MS - It's become a tradition for Charles Bishop. As soon as Jackson State releases its football schedule each year, he picks up the phone, dials a Birmingham hotel and books his room for the weekend of the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship football game.

Nine times out of the last dozen years, JSU didn't qualify for the title game, and Bishop had to call back six or so months later to cancel. This year, he didn't have to wait nearly that long. "I had to call the other day," Bishop said earlier this week.

Jackson State's banishment from this season's league championship game has been a powerful punch in the gut to diehard fans like Bishop. It's been a disappointing shock wave to players who signed with the school in February. They're all feeling the sting of the SWAC's ruling last week to make the Tigers ineligible for the 2011 title game - a decision that conformed with the NCAA's postseason ban, placed on JSU for low academic performance.

SWAC issues postseason bans for low APR

Presidents Adopt Postseason Ban Policy; SWAC adheres to NCAA ban, effective immediately

Birmingham, Ala. - The SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted Thursday to adopt a league policy to prohibit any member institution subject to NCAA postseason bans to include SWAC championships and tournaments. The policy is effective immediately.

Currently, the policy prohibits Southern University and A&M College and Jackson State University from being eligible to participate in the 2011 Farmers Insurance SWAC Football Championship, and it prohibits the Southern University and A&M College and Grambling State University men’s basketball teams from participation in the 2012 Farmers Insurance SWAC Basketball Tournament.

The NCAA already hit both schools with a postseason ban because of low APR scores, which were released last month. But the SWAC football championship did not apply because the NCAA considers the game an extension of the regular season. The league does not receive an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Jackson State Taylor's situation remains in limbo

Coach Denise Taylor-Travis
Jackson, MS - If Jackson State fires women's basketball coach Denise Taylor without cause, the university would owe her nearly $190,000. Taylor, who just completed her 10th year with JSU, is heading into the third month of paid administrative leave.

Taylor, through her attorney, said she was asked to resign or be fired on May 13.

School officials have refused to discuss Taylor's situation, citing personnel matters. Even when asked if Taylor remained the women's basketball coach, interim athletic director Robert Walker would not comment. Taylor is in the second year of a contract that pays her $91,000 per year and runs through June 30, 2013.

JSU Football Receives Postseason Ban

Jackson State University head football coach
Rick Comegy is in final season of contract.
Nearly 90 percent, 16 of 18, of Jackson State University's athletic programs scored at or above the national average when the National Collegiate Athletic Association released its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) report Tuesday, May 24. Two sports, football and baseball, failed to meet the standards.

Two JSU teams were nationally recognized for being in the top 10 percent, in regards to Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and achievement. The women’s golf and tennis teams both received perfect APR scores of 1,000. Four other teams recorded scores of 970 and above: men’s tennis (970), volleyball (978), softball (982) and women’s cross country (994). Eight teams scored in the range 926-968: bowling (926), men’s indoor track (943), women’s indoor track (946), men’s outdoor track (946), men’s golf (946), soccer (963), women’s outdoor track (965) and men’s cross country (968). The women’s basketball team recorded a score of 917 and the men’s basketball team scored 906.

Football and baseball were the only two sports to fall below the national benchmark of 900. The football program scored 879 and the baseball team scored 888. The football team will be limited to 50.46 scholarships, 16 hours of practice time five days a week and a ban from post-season play (with the exception of the Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship game according to NCAA Bylaws). However, the final decision...

NCAA Academic Metric Hits HBCUs

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has banned a record eight teams from postseason play because of their athletes’ poor academic performance -- the most since the academic penalty system was first used two years ago. But, in a sign of the widening gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” in college sport, four of those punished teams are from historically black colleges and universities, and a fifth is from an institution designated by the federal government as predominantly black.

Tuesday, the NCAA released its annual set of Academic Progress Rates -- scores for each Division I sports team based on the academic eligibility and retention of each scholarship athlete. Teams scoring below certain APR thresholds can face penalties ranging from scholarship losses and practice time reductions to postseason bans and, ultimately, suspension of their institution’s NCAA membership. The longer a team scores below a certain threshold, the more severe its penalty. Each teams is judged on the four-year average of its APR. The latest scores are from the 2006-7, 2007-8, 2008-9 and 2009-10 academic years. (A searchable database is available showing complete APR scores and penalties per institution and team.) This year, of the 6,400 teams in Division I, 103 teams from 67 institutions were punished. Sixty teams lost scholarships, 16 received public warnings, 19 lost practice time and 8 have postseason bans.

SWAC tourney: Jackson State overcomes Prairie View

SHREVEPORT, La. - Prairie View A&M went toe-to-toe with Jackson State in its Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament opener but came undone in the seventh inning en route to a 6-3 loss Wednesday afternoon at Fair Grounds Field.

Jackson State, the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Division, scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and advance to the winner's bracket. Prairie View, seeded third in the Western Division, will face the loser of Wednesday night's matchup between Western top seed Southern and Eastern fourth seed Alabama State at noon Thursday.

The Panthers (24-20) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Giovanni Angel and Evan Richard. Prairie View starter Michael Listi made that lead hold up through the next two innings but ran into trouble in the seventh.

This fall marks a century for JSU Football

You knew about Walter Payton. You knew about Jackie Slater and Harold Jackson and Willie Richardson and Jimmy Smith and Robert Brazile and W.C. Gorden. If you follow football at all, you knew about Jackson State's remarkable pedigree in the sport. But did you know about John R. Pinckett?

I didn't, not until Thursday when JSU kicked off its centennial celebration of playing college football with a public relations event at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

One hundred years ago this fall, Pinckett gathered together a group of 22 students to form the first JSU football team. The Tigers - were they the Tigers then? - played one game that first season. We're not sure about the date or the site, but we do know the score. Then Jackson College lost 17-0 to Alabama State, then Lincoln Normal.

We're not sure how Lincoln Normal managed 17 points, but...

Jackson State AD search on hold, but 1 candidate emerges

A.D. Charles McClelland
Even though Jackson State's search for an athletic director hasn't officially begun, one former finalist for the position has voiced his interest in the job again.

Charles McClelland, a Jackson native entering his fourth year as athletic director at Texas Southern, said the "opportunity to get interest from JSU and come home is exciting.

"Being from Jackson, I understand the rich history and tradition at JSU and what it means to the city of Jackson," said McClelland, a finalist for the job in 2006.
