WSSU 'officially' accepted back into CIAA

The NCAA has granted Winston-Salem State its re-admittance to Division II. WSSU, which spent four years in transition to Division I, decided to halt that process last September. WSSU was also granted re-admittance into the CIAA.

Jimmy Jenkins, the president of Livingstone College and the chairman of the CIAA board of directors, said: "I speak on behalf of my colleagues as I express our excitement about the fact that Winston-Salem State University has returned." The Rams spent 61 years in the CIAA before leaving following the 2004-05 academic year.

SIAC moves headquarters to Atlanta

SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore continues to take steps to strengthen the conference’s visibility by moving its offices to downtown Atlanta.

ATLANTA, GA – Better web site? Check. Facebook? Check. Move to a more appropriate location? Check again. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference officially moved its headquarters from Tucker to Atlanta on Friday, the latest move in an effort to increase public awareness for the conference. “The move to downtown Atlanta is beneficial to the SIAC and its member institutions,” said Edythe Bradley, Albany State’s University Sports Information Director. “The move means more visibility and more exposure in a corporate environment.”

The relocation to the South Tower of the Peachtree Center — which is in the heart of downtown Atlanta — makes sense, since it is closer to sponsors and the location of the SIAC basketball conference championship, but it isn’t exactly new territory. “The irony of the whole thing is that we moved back into the same building we were in 10 years ago,” SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore told The Herald in an exclusive interview by telephone Friday. “But it’ll make the basketball tournament bigger and better, and increase the visiblity of the conference, where we’ve made great strides in the past.

“The goal is to make our conference more accessible as well.” Moore — who made the decision for the move after consulting with advisors — has also made a series of changes since he was hired a year and a half ago, among them adding a Facebook page for the conference and signing a deal with web design company SIDEARM Sports to increase visibility on the Internet.

JCSU hires Steelers great as mentoring consultant

Johnson C. Smith University has hired four-time Super Bowl champion Donnie Shell to launch a mentoring facility on campus. JCSU's Center for Spiritual Life will facilitate spiritual and religious outreach on campus and the surrounding faith community. Shell's consulting firm will also help the university develop responsibilities for the center's director. School officials will review his findings and implement them in the fall.

“In my conversations with Mr. Shell, I have been impressed with his approach to mentoring young people spiritually,” Johnson C. Smith President Ronald L. Carter said in a statement. “I have asked him to develop a similar mentoring program on campus.”

Shell, a South Carolina State University graduate, won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers and retired with 51 interceptions. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Shell has been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was named to the Steelers' all-time team, the College Football Hall of Fame, and the NFL's silver anniversary Super Bowl team. He was director of player development for the Carolina Panthers from 1994-2009, where he mentored players in their education and post-football activities.

Donnie Shell is one of our all time favorite players...this is a funny Roast of Shell.

"I want to thank Paula for all her hard work and dedicated service in a variety of roles at SSU," said new SSU AD Bart Bellairs. "She is going to be a big asset at Lincoln University and will be missed by many people at SSU. I appreciate what she has done during my brief time as athletics director."
