DURHAM, N.C. -- N.C. Central men's basketball coach Levelle Moton was welcomed into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Thursday when the league held its preseason coaches' teleconference.
Moton said he was glad the Eagles have found another home in the MEAC after three seasons of barnstorming the country playing games. NCCU still is in transition to full NCAA Division I membership and full participation in the MEAC, but the Eagles will be competing against more teams from the conference this season.

S.C. State faces surprise unbeaten Bethune-Cookman
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina State on top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is no surprise. But Saturday's opponent, Bethune-Cookman, wasn't expected to be anywhere near first place at this point in the season.
Picked to finish eighth in the MEAC, the Wildcats (5-0, 3-0) have won their first five games by an average of 34 points. Now they get a chance to knock off the big dogs in the league. The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0) have won 21 games in a row in the conference.
"Any time you're playing a hot team, it's gonna be tough to get ready," Pough said. "They seem to be excited about what they're doing."

Virginia State Trojans take over first in CIAA North
ETTRICK, VA -- Daronte McNeill took Elizabeth City as far as he could, but it was a balanced Virginia State attack that prevailed 15-10 last night. Playing on just five days rest, the Trojans went with a wildcat offense that spread the carries around, then let sophomore quarterback Jarred Battle finish the job.The Vikings had McNeill, who nearly completed a second-half comeback, but his mud-stained jersey showed just how heavy the team rode its workhorse back. Unlike VSU, McNeill had no quarterback to lean on -- sophomore Namon Jones threw three interceptions in his first collegiate start.
Trojans hold off Vikings 15-10
ETTRICK, VA - The spotlight suits the Virginia State University football team. The Trojans played host to the CBS Division II game of the week and were seemingly unphased by the national audience. They jumped out to a first-half lead and held on to beat visiting Elizabeth City State University 15-10 on Thursday in a CIAA North Division game.
After fumbling on its first possession and punting on its second, Virginia State performed the football equivalent of batting for the cycle. The Trojans scored in every possible way - tallying a touchdown, two field goals and a safety en route to a 15-3 lead.

Elizabeth City State’s football team’s motto this season is “Seal the Deal.” On Saturday, the Vikings had several chances to seal the game and ultimately had to turn to a handful of backups to secure a 17-14 win over Virginia Union.

Last year, Elizabeth City State was riding high atop the division standings when it took a trip to Ettrick, Va. where Virginia State stunned the Vikings 23-10 to begin a skid that cost ECSU a trip to the CIAA championship game.
The Vikings (4-2, 3-0) are in the same position and cannot afford a loss at Virginia State (4-2, 2-1) when the two teams meet tonight in a nationally televised contest.

JSU Tigers aiming to feast on Southern Jags
For offensive coordinator Earnest Wilson and quarterback Casey Therriault, it can't get much better than this. Owner of the best passing offense in the Football Championship Subdivision, Jackson State (4-1, 2-1 SWAC) hosts a Southern team that struggles in defending the pass.
The Jaguars (2-3, 1-2) have a young secondary that has just four interceptions through five games this season - that's next to last in the conference. "We like to throw a little bit," coach Rick Comegy said when asked about Southern's struggling pass D.

Greg LaFleur is in a tight spot. On one hand, the Southern University athletic director has to please the school's rabid fan base. On the other, he has to raise money for the university. When LaFleur moved Southern's home football game last year against Jackson State to 60,000-seat Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, it did two things:
It doubled the amount of money the school would have made had the game been played at the school's 24,000-seat A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge. And it ticked off many Jaguar fans.

Alcorn visits Grambling in East-West showdown
A preview of the SWAC championship game could take place this weekend at Eddie Robinson Stadium. Alcorn (3-2, 2-1 travels to Grambling (4-1, 3-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a battle of East and West Division leaders. Both have a shot at reaching the league title game on Dec. 11 at Birmingham’s Legion Field. Alcorn is tied atop the Eastern Division with Jackson State.

For awhile last season, defensive line coach George Small wondered about nose guard Nicolas Hollinghead's desire. Small wanted to see a little more energy from the 6-foot-4, 284-pound redshirt junior. "I don't know how much he was committed to it," Small said. "I don't know if it was because of those older guys who were in front of him, but he just didn't really press it like I thought he would."
This past spring, the light came on for Hollinghead, who played just two seasons at Cocoa High School before coming for FAMU. He recommitted to putting in the hours in the weight room and worked on his technique to the point that he was unbeatable for the starting nose guard position coming out of spring camp.

That was Lorrin Rucker, who was punishing on the front line for Florida A&M to help the Rattlers defeat the Eagles 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the Lawson Center. It was FAMU's fourth straight win.
Rocker had 10 of her 13 kills through the first two sets. She watched most of the third set from the sideline, but as soon as she returned to the floor she delivered a kill to put FAMU within four points of completing the sweep.

When coach Joe Taylor adjusts the offense of his Florida A&M football team with a two-back set in an attempt to jump start the Rattlers' offense, the receiving corps can expect to see fewer opportunities for catches while they'll have to do more blocking.

Tehvyn Brantley of Winston-Salem State is short for a college wide receiver, and he carries a big chip on his shoulder. Brantley, a 5-7, 175-pound freshman, says he could have played at a Division I school, possibly using his outstanding speed as a kick returner, but that the conditions weren’t what he wanted. Instead, he’s making an impact for WSSU.“I had offers from N.C. State, North Carolina and South Carolina,” said Brantley, who is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Durham with his mother three years ago to attend Mount Zion Christian Academy. “I had a couple of offers from mid-majors, and North Carolina was actually going to give me a chance if I went to Hargrave Military, but I didn’t want to do that.”

Motorcycle enthusiasts will get a chance to ride around the Bowman Gray Stadium track Saturday during pregame festivities for Winston-Salem State’s game against Livingstone, and Athletics Director Bill Hayes, an avid rider, will lead a parade of motorcycles.
The ride will be at 4 p.m., and kickoff will be at 6 p.m. The cost to ride in the parade is $35, including a ticket to the game, and there will also be a special motorcycle tailgate spot. Jefferson H.S. QB Quentin Williams commits to Bethune-Cookman
The recruitment of Jefferson quarterback Quentin Williams took an unexpected turn this weekend when the Dragons senior orally committed to Division I-AA Bethune-Cookman University. Williams, who is in the middle of what could be the most prolific passing season by a Hillsborough County quarterback, struggled to get on the Division I-A recruiting radar, but appeared to be drawing more interest recently.Jefferson coach Mike Fenton described Williams' commitment as a soft verbal, but said Williams committed while attending Bethune-Cookman's homecoming win over Delaware State. "I think he still wants to take other visits and see if something else big comes up, but I guess he went up there and was talking with some of the other recruits and decided to commit," Fenton said.

Fayetteville State shocks division-leading Virginia State, 21-14
PETERSBURG, Va. - Fayetteville State shocked the CIAA North Division leader, Virginia State, 21-14, on Saturday night. It was the first road win of the season for the Broncos (2-4, 1-2). Fayetteville State built up a 21-0 lead after three quarters, then held off a rally by the Trojans.Quarterback Robert Benjamin threw three touchdown passes for the Broncos.

ETTRICK, VA - The stage was set for more late-game heroics from the Virginia State football team. Having won last week on a last-minute 50-yard touchdown pass, they looked poised to steal another game, this time from visiting Fayetteville State. But sophomore quarterback Jarred Battle's fourth-and-goal pass fell incomplete with 27 seconds left and the Broncos held on for a 21-14 victory.

Prairie View A&M University Department of Athletics has entered into a two-year agreement with the City of Shreveport and State Fair of Louisiana to bring to the city one football game each during the 2010 and 2011 seasons at Independence Stadium.Prairie View's first contest in Shreveport will take place on October 23rd, 2010 versus Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge). VUU Donaldson Reaches 2,000 Yard Plateau
Virginia Union University's Tarian Donaldson rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, but Elizabeth City State University downed VUU 17-14 in Elizabeth City, N.C., on October 9.
Donaldson became only the third Panther in the last 10 years to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in his career. The senior running back from Virginia Beach, VA, now has 2,022 career yards. Andre Braxton and Elihu Smith are the other Panthers to rush for more than 2,000 yards in their careers during the last decade.

New chancellor's box boost to ECSU plans |
Fans at Roebuck Stadium Saturday noticed a new structure on the home side. A new chancellor’s suite was installed last week and will remain in place for Elizabeth City State’s final two home games. The building is a temporary structure that filled an immediate need Vikings’ officials saw.

Lane Dragons lose close one after controversial call
Lane College went from the brink of assuring its first win in 17 games to going to overtime in 46.7 seconds. Benedict beat the Dragons 30-23 in overtime at Lane Stadium on Saturday.Lane (0-6) held a 23-20 lead late in the fourth quarter with the ball on the Benedict 1-yard line. Lane quarterback Tahj Dent appeared to have dived into the end zone for the two-possession lead, but the referees said that Dent fumbled and called a touchback to give Benedict the ball on the 20-yard line with 46.7 seconds remaining. Lane still held the 23-20 lead.

Fourth-quarter burst lifts Hampton past NC Central 27-13
DURHAM, N.C. – Hampton scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and rallied beat North Carolina Central for the second straight year. The Pirates prevailed 27-13 thanks to a 19-yard touchdown reception by Javaris Brown and interception returns of 55 yards by Matt Davis and 68 yards by Ricardo Silva all in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Hampton won its fourth straight game this season and seventh straight over the Eagles in the series that was renewed last season with NCCU's acceptance into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. A year ago, Hampton scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter to beat the Eagles. Next season with NCCU gaining full conference membership, the game will count in the MEAC standings.

Texas Southern Tigers defense flusters Bridge in Alcorn State loss
LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State quarterback Brandon Bridge has shown such great promise since becoming the starter three games ago that the ASU sports information department is trying to think of nicknames for him. But he is still a true freshman. And against Texas Southern’s relentless pressure, you could tell.
The Tigers’ pressure flustered Bridge all game long, forcing him to throw two interceptions, cough up a fumble and take a crucial sack in the final minute of the Braves’ 30-20 loss. Southern Jaguars hold on to win
Was this really about to happen? In the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s game between Southern and Mississippi Valley State, before they pulled away for a 38-20 victory in front of a nervous but happy homecoming crowd of 19,762 inside A.W. Mumford Stadium, the Jaguars had bungled a chance at collecting their first blowout win of the Stump Mitchell era.
Worse yet, the winless Delta Devils had scored back-to-back touchdowns; their sideline was full of life, and they were primed to get the ball back with plenty of time to take their first lead of the season. Was this really about to happen? This was Mississippi Valley. This was winless Mississippi Valley.
SU defense holds up
The fourth quarter of Saturday’s game between Southern University and Mississippi Valley State proved to be gut-check time for a Jaguars defensive unit that has struggled at times this season. This time, the defense was up to the task shutting out the Delta Devils in the final quarter while Southern tacked on two insurance scores to salt away a 38-20 win at Mumford Stadium.
Southern’s William Griswold kicked a 37-yard field goal to extend the Jaguars’ lead to 24-7 midway through the third quarter, but Valley scored twice to cut the margin to 24-20 entering the fourth. From there, the Southern defense made sure its offense would have plenty of breathing room.
Special teams play remains inconsistent
Five games into this first season under Stump Mitchell, Southern is still waiting for a clean, sound performance on special teams. The new coach has certainly noticed.
Saturday night, during the Jaguars’ 38-20 victory over Mississippi Valley State, the Delta Devils’ first touchdown came on another special-teams gaffe, when SU kicker William Griswold tried a 43-yard field goal and drove it low, into the line of scrimmage. Markkus Davis returned it for a 62-yard touchdown. Instead of leading 10-0, the Jaguars found themselves in a 7-7 tie.

KSU 'Breds win big with homecoming looming
In convincing fashion, the Kentucky State football team defeated Central State 41-24 Saturday in Wilburforce, Ohio, improving to 3-4 overall (2-3 SIAC). The ‘Breds opened with a touchdown just eight seconds into the game as Jerrel Noland connected with Jamaree Gordon on a 40-yard pass (PAT missed).
Central threatened to score on its first possession of the game, driving the ball 55 yards on eight plays, but KSU’s Cory Spalding intercepted Jeffrey Brooks’ pass in the end zone and returned it to the 15-yard line.
The Thorobreds were unable to get into Central territory on their next drive and were forced to punt. The Marauders started their second drive with 7:33 to play in the first quarter and on eight plays drove 47 yards, but were left to settle for a field goal (6-3 KSU).

Home Sweet Home: Albany State Rams rip Miles College in Homecoming game
ALBANY, GA — There was something special in the air at Albany State University Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Maybe it was the cloud of smoke rising from the parking lot, where new and old friends laughed and tailgated together to their heart’s content. Maybe it was the blare of trumpets, echoing from ASU’s and Miles’ bands as they competed for pride and the crowd’s attention.
Or maybe it was a little bit of magic emanating from the fingertips of Rams quarterback Stanley Jennings as he hit receivers for touchdowns — again and again. Whatever the reason, it was a homecoming to remember for Albany State fans as the Rams defeated Miles, 34-7, in front of a capacity crowd to move to No. 1 in the SIAC after Morehouse lost to Tuskegee, 31-15.

"This is my first Homecoming in all of these years," said Clano Stephens. Stephens graduated with the class of 1931. This is his first homecoming, he was the grand marshal.

A-Mayes-ing: JSU Tigers receiver puts on 3-TD show
Posed a question about his final hurrah of an extraordinary afternoon Saturday, Anthony Mayes had to pause and think. What? You expect the Jackson State receiver to remember all three of his touchdowns? "Hmmm," Mayes said, scratching his face in thought. "Let me see ... the last one ..." Yep, it was just that kind of day for Mayes - and the rest of JSU's Air Raid offense, too.
Mayes hauled in three scoring passes and quarterback Casey Therriault again sliced easily through an opponent's secondary as Jackson State beat Alabama A&M 30-14, picking up a victory that might just send the Tigers back to Birmingham. For the last four seasons, the winner of the A&M-JSU game has won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division and advanced to Birmingham for the league title game. "It's super big," coach Rick Comegy said afterward. Said Mayes: "We're riding high."
Surprise: A&M's starting QB out with injury
Call it smart. Call it clever. Call it deceitful or unfair. The bottom line is that Alabama A&M played without its starting quarterback Saturday and not many knew it until the backup strolled onto the field for the first play of Jackson State's 30-14 victory at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium..
"It was a well-kept secret," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. A&M coach Anthony Jones kept quarterback Deaunte Mason's injury - a groin pull - out of the media all week. In turn, JSU spent time in practice on defending the triple option, something Mason does well. A&M ran the option twice Saturday.
Notebook: Kicker will miss rest of season
Kicker Jabril Smith, a Callaway High grad, will miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle, Jackson State coach Rick Comegy confirmed following the Tigers' 30-14 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday.
Smith suffered what was thought to be a mild injury in the win over Mississippi Valley State two weeks ago. Midway through this week, Comegy said he expected him back in two weeks. Smith had surgery on the ankle Oct. 1, and Comegy was made aware later this week that he would not be returning this year. That leaves punter Reed Gallagher...

It's just past lunch time Thursday. John Doyle is sitting in his bustling classroom at Wyoming Park High in Michigan with the phone pressed to his ear, listening intently. He's being read Casey Therriault's statistics through four games as Jackson State's quarterback: 360 yards a game, 28 completions per game, 12 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
"It doesn't surprise me one bit," Doyle said chuckling a bit. "You should see his stats from high school." To Doyle, Therriault's high school coach, the numbers the QB is posting, while head-shakingly good, are the norm.

Nickelberry Announces Men's Basketball Schedule for 2010/11
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard University head coach Kevin Nickelberry announces the 2010 -11 men's basketball schedule. The Bison open the season with a home game against Bowling Green. Howard will then travel to West Lafayette, IN to take on nationally ranked Purdue on November 14.
