David Washington is impressive as ODU rolls past Hampton 54-21

NORFOLK, Virginia --There were some opening-night jitters, and some key mistakes. At times, Old Dominion’s offense faltered, and the defense gave up some big plays.

But in a game delayed a day by tropical storm Hermine, ODU gave its home fans something Sunday night they haven’t had for three years – the chance to cheer an old fashioned, blowout victory.

Showing no ill effects from knee surgery nine months ago, quarterback David Washington tossed four touchdown passes, and ODU's defense looked much improved, as the Monarchs pulled away in the second half to pummel Hampton, 54-21, at Foreman Field.

ODU last won by such a lopsided margin on Nov. 2, 2013, when the Monarchs downed Rhode Island, 66-14. It was the most points ODU has scored since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA.

The game was a critical test for Washington, who had surgery to repair two torn ligaments and meniscus in December. He had not been tackled live since being injured last November at Southern Mississippi.

Dayton Wins Opener Over Central State 31-19

DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Dayton (1-0) jumped ahead early and hung on late to take down Central State (0-1) in the 2016 home opener on Saturday evening at Welcome Stadium.

SCORING
• Dayton's first touchdown of the 2016 season came on a one-yard run from Jack Adams that capped a seventy-one yard scoring drive and put the Flyers up 7-0.
• The Flyers made it 14-0 when Alex Jeske found Jack Euritt in the back of the endzone with an eight-yard connection.
• UD capped off the first half scoring with a Jeske nine-yard scamper that put Dayton up 21-0.
• Senior kicker William Will knocked in his first field goal attempt of the season from 22 yards out to give the Flyers a 24-0 lead.
• Jeske connected with J.P. Forcucci for a 10-yard touchdown, putting Dayton ahead 31-0
• Central State got on the board with a De'Michael Jackson one-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, but a bad snap prevented the extra point, 31-6.
• The Marauders returned a punt 80 yards by Clim Robbins to make it 31-12 late in the fourth quarter.
• Central State wrapped up the scoring with short Jackson run from inside the four to bring the game to its final score of 31-19.

• Dayton outgained the Marauders 408 to 365. That included 152 yards on the ground and 256 in the air.
• Dayton forced 6 turnovers in the game. Sophomore safety David Leisring led the Flyers with two interceptions.
• Redshrt sophomore quarterback Alex Jeske was 18 of 27 for 256 yards. Jeske threw for two touchdowns and an interception.

Alabama A&M Routed by Middle Tennessee State 55-0

MURFREESBORO, Tennessee – It didn't take long for Middle Tennessee to get in the end zone for the first time Saturday in its 55-0 win over Alabama A&M, and once it did the floodgates opened.

The Blue Raiders needed just 1:18 to find the end zone when redshirt senior I'Tavius Mathers, a Blackman product who came home to Murfreesboro prior to last season after three years at Ole Miss, capped the five-play, 61-yard opening drive with a 32-yard rushing score.

"I just saw the defense load up to the left and, I think, a corner was out on top of Demetrius [Frazier], and I just trusted the line to do their job and Demetrius to do his job; the rest is just me running into the endzone," he said. "I have to give credit to the offensive line and receivers for blocking it up and making my job easy."

Mathers finished with seven rushes for 62 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half, in his first game in front of his hometown crowd. Redshirt freshman Terelle West led the way on the ground with 83 yards on 15 carries in his first-ever collegiate game.

"I'Tavius had a couple of nice runs in there; I thought he did a really nice job … Terelle and Ruben, I thought they did a really good job," head coach Rick Stockstill said. "For the first game, and until you watch the film you never know, but I thought those guys competed really well."

With the running backs setting the tone on the ground, redshirt sophomore quarterback Brent Stockstill and the new-look Middle Tennessee receiving corps were free to go to work.

Stockstill completed his first 22 passes of the game, breaking the previous MT school record of consecutive passes completed of 19 set by Logan Kilgore in 2011. Stockstill completed 30 of his 36 throws in the first half for 329 yards, five scores and one interception before giving up the reigns to backup redshirt freshman John Urzua after halftime.

"First of all, I felt like Coach [Tony] Franklin did a great job preparing not only me but this team throughout the whole offseason," Brent Stockstill said. "Coming into the game I was extremely confident, and to complete 22 straight balls 22 guys have to catch it, so credit goes to those guys."

Stockstill threw three of his five touchdown passes in the first quarter. Two players on the receiving end of those – sophomore Desmond Anderson and redshirt junior Patrick Smith – were making their first starts at wide receiver for the Blue Raiders.

In total, three receivers – Anderson, Smith and redshirt senior Dennis Andrews – made their first touchdown grabs at Middle Tennessee. True freshman Ty Lee also made his first start at MT and finished with four catches for 42 yards, and redshirt sophomore Richie James led the team with eight grabs for 73 yards and a score.

"There were a lot of firsts out there," Rick Stockstill said. "But I thought we pitched and caught it pretty well."

While the Blue Raider offense was impressive, scoring 45 points in the first half alone and gaining 681 total yards in the game, their defense was equally strong in the shutout.

Alabama A&M gained just 146 total yards of offense and punted 13 times in 16 possessions. The Blue Raiders came up with four sacks and an interception, and were led in tackles by junior Malik Hawkins with six and redshirt junior Myles Harges with five.

Sticking with the theme of new guys making key contributions, Harges was making his first start at MT in his third game played, and Hawkins was wearing the blue and white for the first time.

"I've been ready to play for my team all year and all summer," Harges said. "I've been waiting for this since I got here."

Losing 30 lettermen from last year's team and suffering a few key injuries during the offseason have created plenty of chances for new guys to step in and contribute this season.

Early returns on most of those players are that they are ready to take the torch and lead the Blue Raiders to a special season this year in Murfreesboro.

"We had some young guys in there playing for the first time, and I think they did a really good job," Rick Stockstill said.

Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays Vanderbilt in Nashville next Saturday at 3 p.m.

POSTGAME NOTES:
CAPTAINS: Today's game captains were OL Daniel Stephens, DL Raynard Felton and WR Demetrius Frazier.
HOME SWEET HOME: Middle Tennessee continued its strong play at home with the season opening win over AAMU. The Blue Raiders are now 18-3 at the friendly confines over its last 21 games and have won four straight.

STOCKSTILL MOVES PAST COLLIER: With 329 passing yards tonight against AAMU, Brent Stockstill moved past Marvin Collier for eighth place on Middle Tennessee's all-time list. Stockstill now has 4,375 career yards and will now look ahead to seventh place Teddy Morris (4,799).

JAMES JUMPS INTO TOP 10: With eight receptions tonight, sophomore Richie James jumped all the way to a tie for seventh place on the Blue Raiders' all-time list in just 14 games played. James now has 116 career receptions and needs six more to take over sixth place from Kyle Griswould.

NO. 9: QB Brent Stockstill added to his school career record of 300-yard passing games by throwing for 329 yards in the season opener tonight. Stockstill now has 9 300-yard passing games, including six in his last seven games.

SHUTOUT: Middle Tennessee threw a shutout in its season-opening win over Alabama A&M for its second goose egg under Tyrone Nix. It was also the first shutout by MT since blanking FIU, 48-0, on Nov. 9, 2013. The season-opening shutout was also the first by MT since 1986 when the Blue Raiders downed Miles, 47-0 at home.

MT SETS TOTAL OFFENSE MARK UNDER STOCKSTILL: The Blue Raiders recorded 681 yards of total offense against Alabama A&M, the most ever in Head Coach Rick Stockstill's tenure. MT was just four yards shy of tying the all-time mark of 685, which was set in a 70-58 win against Idaho on Oct. 16, 2001.

Virginia State Trojans Open the Season with a Win on the Road Against Lenoir-Rhyne

PETERSBURG, Virginia  --  The Virginia State University Trojans win season opener upsetting Lenoir-Rhyne University 34 – 9 amidst a crowd of nearly 6,000. The two teams have met only twice in the history of both institutions. In 2014 the Bears traveled to Virginia State and captured a 34 – 6 victory ruining the Trojans season opener. Virginia State and Lenoir-Rhyne won their conference championships that year. This year the Trojans traded places and left Hickory, NC with the season opening win and momentum to carry them into the 2016 Season 1-0. The contest was just 1 of 3 non-conference opponents the Trojans will endure before entering conference play in Week 4.

"Today was a great way to go out and start our season against a really good team. I'm just happy and proud for our coaches and players. The guys came out with the type of energy and enthusiasm we want, played well, did well, and we were able to come out with a victory," shared Head Coach Reggie Barlow.

Senior quarterback Tarian Ayres (Buckingham, VA) went 24-17 passing for 201 yards. (Offensively the Trojans were led by junior running back Trenton Cannon (Hampton, VA) scored two touchdowns in the first half, ending the game with 72 yards receiving and 66 yards on the ground. Senior running back Kavon Bellamy (Hampton, VA) followed up rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Stephen Mines (Chester, VA) visited the end zone today scoring his first touchdown as a Trojan on a 1 yard run.

"It's a great feeling. Getting my first one was just great," expressed Mines.

T.J Smith led the Bears offensively recording 87 yards on 4 receptions. Nelson Brown followed up with 70 yards rushing.
The Trojan defense was pioneered by All-CIAA Preseason honoree senior linebacker Geo Feggins (South Hill, VA) who recorded 15 total tackles (8 solo). Rodney Singleton led the Bears defensive effort recording 11 total tackles (6 solo).

Virginia State won the opening toss, but deferred putting the defense out on the field first. After a series of Bears first downs, an incomplete pass intended for T.J Smith forces the Bears to punt. The Trojans score on the opening drive putting together 9 plays for 85 yards sending Bellamy into the end zone on a 3 yard run. Senior kicker Mathew Hillquist (Glen Allen, VA) attempts the extra point kick to give VSU a 7-0 lead

On the next Lenoir-Rhyne drive the Trojan defense holds the Bears to 3 and out with a loss of 4 yards. Senior defensive lineman Bryant Frazier (Glen Allen, VA) ends the drive with a sack for a loss of 3 sending a message to the Bears offense early.

With 6:04 remaining in the first quarter Ayres (Buckingham, VA) launches a pass midfield to Cannon for a 33 yard gain. Four plays later Cannon enters the end zone on a 2 yard run to give the Trojans a 13 – 0 lead that they would carry into the second quarter.

The Trojans wasted no time moving the ball to start the second quarter. A 13 yard completion to sophomore Josh Harris (William, VA) results in a VSU first down at the 50 yard line. On 3rd and 9 Ayres finds an open Cannon who takes it to the house for a 26 yard touchdown extending the Trojan lead 20- 0 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

With just over two minutes remaining in the first half the Bears make their mark on the scoreboard off a 15 yard pass from Kellar to Ray Beam.

VSU looks to get into the end zone one more time after Ayres links up with senior tight end Andrew Clark (Richmond, VA) for a 21 yard gain setting the Trojans up for 1st and 10 at the Bears 17 yard line. However, time is not on the Trojans side and they settle for a field goal on 1st and goal to end the half, but the kick by Hillquist is no good and the Trojans enter the half leading Lenoir-Rhyne
20 – 7.

The Bears defense slows the Trojans down in the third quarter, but the Trojans maintain their composure. A series of first downs eventually leads to a 2 yard touchdown for the Trojans as Bellamy burst through the Bears defense putting the Trojans up by 20 with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Both teams exchanged fumble recoveries early in the fourth quarter, with the Trojans getting the better end result of the ordeal as senior Bryce Bradley (Richmond, VA) picks up 44 yards after recovering a fumble on 2nd and goal for the Bears.

On the next drive Mines picks up a huge first down on a 41 yard carry and on 3rd and goal Mines gets inside the end zone for a 1 yard touchdown making it a 34 -7 VSU lead with under five minutes remaining on the game clock.

A safety penalty called on the Trojans with 21 seconds remaining in the game results in two points for the Bears. Despite the safety, the Trojans were already on the sidelines celebrating the victory. The players emptied their coolers out showering Head Coach Reggie Barlow in love and during the post -game huddle Feggins took a moment to toss Coach Barlow the game ball in admiration of embracing them and leading them to victory along with the coaching staff.

Seton Hill Wins 50-48 Shootout Over Bowie State in Season Opener

BOWIE, Maryland – Sophomore Robert Chesson (Annapolis, Md.) rushed for a team-high 131 yards and redshirt freshman Amir Hall (Bowie, Md.) passed for a school-record 427 yards and tied the school record with five passing touchdowns, but Seton Hill University won the shootout by a final score of 50-48 on Saturday afternoon.

Redshirt senior Nyme Manns (Baltimore, Md.) broke his own school record, with 211 reception yards and scored three touchdowns in the setback. The old reception yards in a game record was 194 at Central Connecticut State last season. Junior Lamar Montgomery (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Taylor Johnson (Washington, D.C.) paced the Bulldogs defense with nine tackles each.

Bowie State opened the scoring on their second possession. The Bulldogs were pinned on their own two yard line after a 72 yard punt by William Hodge was downed at the two. That did not stop Bowie State as Chesson took the next play and ran 98 yards for the game's opening touchdown. The Griffins tied the score at seven on a 14 yard touchdown pass from Christian Strong to Ardell Brown with 1:59 left in the first quarter. It didn't take Chesson long to break another long run, going 75 yards to take a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter. The Bulldogs' drive took just three plays and 51 seconds.

The Griffins took advantage of a short field on their first possession of the second quarter. They covered the 53 yards in only eight plays, capped off by a Jarvis McClam four yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14. The Seton Hill defense then forced a punt with the snap going over the head of Bowie State senior punter Christopher Palmer, giving Seton Hill the ball at the BSU 15 yard line. It took the Griffins just four plays to take the lead on a five yard TD run by Khalil Howard. Seton Hill led 21-14 midway thru the second quarter.

It did not take Bowie State's Bulldogs long to score as they hit another big play, this time a 59 yard touchdown pass from Hall to Manns. The PAT was missed by freshman Gene Carson, II and SHU leaving Seton Hill in front by a score of 21-20.

The Griffins fumbled on their next possession and Bowie State took advantage of the turnover to take the lead. The BSU combo on Hall and Manns connected on a 37 yard TD pass and catch to retake the lead at 27-21 with 3:17 to play in the first half. As the case most of the first half, Seton Hill snatched the lead right back. After an incompletion on their first play of the drive, Strong found Malik Scott with a 65 yard bomb to put Seton Hill back in the lead at 28-27 with 2:45 to play in the half. Bowie State sophomore Maurice Williams (Baltimore, Md.) ran the kickoff back to the Seton Hill 6-yard line and Hall scored three plays later to take a 34-28 lead with 1:52 remaining in the first half.

Seton Hill received the opening kick of the second half but was forced to punt. Bowie State then put together one of its longest drives of the game, going 82 yards in nine plays to extend their lead to 41-28 early in the second half. Manns hauled in his third score of the game, this time from 65 yards out.

Brown made a diving catch on a 46 yard reception to open the next Griffin drive. That play set up a 17 yard TD pass from Strong to Norman Darden that trimmed the BSU lead to 41-35 with 7:05 to go in the third quarter. Again a bad snap on a punt hurt the Bowie State special teams. This time it went out of the end zone for a safety, cutting the lead Bowie State lead to 41-37.

Seton Hill's McClam returned the free kick 47 yards to the Bowie State 17 yard line. That return set up a 17 yard TD pass from Strong to McClam, shifting the advantage back over to the Griffins at 44-41 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. The Griffin defense then stepped up and made a big stop late in the third quarter. Seton Hill turned the ball over on an interception, giving Bowie State the ball at the Griffin 31 yard line. The Bulldogs could only manage two yards on three plays and Carson's 46 yard field goal fell short with 28 seconds left in the quarter.

Bowie State regained the lead for the final time on their first possession of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs traveled 70 yards in 6 plays, capped by a 26 yard TD pass and catch from Hall to Williams to take a 48-44 lead with 11:41 left in the game. The Griffin offense responded right back with a touchdown drive of their own. Strong hit Scott for 11 yards and 30 yards on the drive and ended the drive with a 37 yard TD pass to Darden. The Griffins PAT was missed but Seton Hill led 50-48 with 9:42 to play. The Seton Hill defense forced Bowie State to go three and out on their final two drives and the Griffins offense was able to convert a fourth and three that allowed them to run the clock out and preserve the win.

Christian Strong was 28-of-44 for 447 yards and five touchdowns. The five touchdowns tie a Seton Hill single game record. Ardell Brown had nine catches for 157 yards and a TD. Malik Scott finished with four catches for 131 yards and a score. Norman Darden added five catches for 81 yards and 2 TDs. Fardan Allen had a strong game defensively. He led the team with eight tackles and added an interception, forced fumble, tackle for loss and pass break up. Tim Johnson and Alex Attia each added seven tackles.

Seton Hill racked up 26 first downs to just 16 for Bowie State. Bowie State's Bulldogs outgained the Griffins 523 to 508. However, the Bulldogs were penalized 11 times for 121 yards compared to six penalties for 60 yards for the Griffins.

Redshirt senior Nyme Manns broke his own school record, with 211 reception yards and scored three touchdowns in the setback. Chesson also recorded a personal career-best 103 reception yards. Graduate student Antoine Young (Washington, D.C.) had eight tackles and recovered one fumble. Redshirt junior Rahman Kamara (Bowie, Md.) picked off two passes and sophomore Bryson McAdams (Odenton, Md.) recorded one interception.

Bowie State University will host Johnson C. Smith University next Saturday (9/10) at 4 p.m.

Wingate claims 38-28 season-opening triumph over Johnson C. Smith

WINGATE, North Carolina -- Wingate University junior running back and pre-season first team All-South Atlantic Conference Lawrence Pittman (Charlotte, N.C.) had 16 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead the WU offensive attack as the Bulldogs claimed a 38-28 victory in its season and home opener against the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field Saturday. Pittman was a Harlon Hill Award nominee as a sophomore.

Wingate is back in action at home next Saturday, Sept. 10, when they host the Shaw University Bears for a 1:30 p.m. kick-off. JCSU hits the road again next week as the Golden Bulls venture to Bowie State University. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.

"We had a great attitude coming into this game," Wingate head coach Joe Reich says. "We were very relaxed, ready to go and excited to go to battle against a good JCSU team. We knew they were going to give us a great game."

The 'Dogs jumped out to the early 7-0 advantage in the first quarter on a 36-yard rushing touchdown by redshirt freshman wide receiver BJ Muckelvene (Waxhaw, N.C.) at the 8:04 mark. It was the Cuthbertson High School Cavalier's first collegiate carry. "It was very cool to see (BJ score a touchdown)," WU redshirt senior quarterback Kyle Johnson (Hickory, N.C.) says. "BJ looked really good throughout camp...it was awesome to see him get this opportunity in his first game."

Tuskegee runs by Clark Atlanta in season opener

ATLANTA, Georgia -- The 17th-ranked Tuskegee University Golden Tigers used every facet of the game to pull away from Clark Atlanta University 36-13 in the season opener at Panther Stadium in front of a capacity crowd Saturday night.

Tuskegee (1-0) used four interceptions to set the stage for the offense and it started on the first possession of the game. The Golden Tigers gave up a big play on the first play from scrimmage, but on the second play, Darnell Hill picked off a pass from Vanderbilt transfer Johnathon McCrary to stop the Panthers drive and give Tuskegee the ball.

The Golden Tigers responded on their first drive, marching 92 yards on 11 plays to take a quick lead. The drive took 7:23 off the clock and culminated with a quarterback sneak from the one, giving the Golden Tigers a 6-0 lead. During the drive, Tuskegee was able to run the ball eight times and used three completions from Lacey to jump on the scoreboard.

Tuskegee turned to special teams on the next Clark Atlanta possession.

A bad snap went through the hands of Panthers' punter Ty Woods and into the end zone, where the freshman was able to fall on it after being tackled by Osband Thompson. The junior linebacker was almost able to strip the ball from Woods, but tackled him the end zone for an 8-0 Tuskegee lead with 5:27 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Golden Tigers weren't done in the opening quarter, using good field position and taking just two places for a 15-0 lead. Lacey hit senior tight end Leo Gilbert with a 38-yard touchdown pass after a short run from scrimmage with 4:30 left to play in the quarter.

Clark Atlanta ended an 11-quarter scoreless streak by punching into the end zone as time expired in the opening quarter, trimming the Tuskegee lead to 15-6.

However, the Golden Tigers responded when junior linebacker Quavon Taylor intercepted a McCrary pass and raced 37 yards into the end zone for the first defensive touchdown of the game, and a 22-6 Tuskegee lead with 8:50 remaining in the contest.

After Clark Atlanta closed to within nine at the half, the Golden Tigers were able to pull away in the second half for the victory. Josh Matthews scored from one-yard out with 8:57 remaining in the third quarter for a 29-13 lead, and the scoring was complete when Jamarcus Ezell hit a diving Javarrius Cheatham in the back of the end zone with 11:28 remaining for the 36-13 lead.

Lacey led the Golden Tigers attack with 179 yards passing, pacing an offense that totaled 405 yards in the win. The senior quarterback did not miss a pass, finishing 8-for-8 on the night; while Ezell came off the bench to finish with 93 yards and a touchdown through the air. On the ground, Jayjerien Craig led the way with 61 yards on eight carries, while Kenny Gant finished with 53 yards on 10 carries for the Golden Tigers.

Thompson led the Golden Tigers defensively with 16 tackles, including eight solo and three tackles for loss. Tuskegee was able to force two sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while having four different players with interceptions on the night.

Tuskegee returns to action next Saturday in the Whitewater Classic against Albany State. Kickoff is set for 5 pm (est) at Garrett-Harrison Stadium and can be seen on the Tuskegee Digital Network.

Lincoln Blue Tigers Fall in Battle of the LUs

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- It was a defensive tussle in the first half, but Langston scored 17 second-half points to hand the Lincoln football a 23-13 loss in the Battle of the LU's on Saturday (Sept. 3).

The contest was scoreless for the first 29 minutes, but the final minute of the second quarter contained some excitement. Langston broke the tie on a one-yard quarterback sneak, but Faleaoga Russell blocked the extra point attempt to hold the Lions' lead at 6-0. The Blue Tigers then responded with a quick seven play drive, beginning with a 13-yard reception by Darius Hicksand a 33-yard touchdown catch by Anthony Townsend.

Townsend's reception was a nice juggling catch, as the ball bounced off his hands before he finally pulled it down despite tremendous coverage from the defense. Townsend finished the game with a team-high 58 receiving yards. Alex Templeton, meanwhile, nailed the extra point to give Lincoln a 7-6 lead at halftime.

The Blue Tigers forced Langston into a three-and-out to open the second half, but Lincoln fumbled at its own seven-yard-line on its opening possession to set the Lions up with great field position. The Blue Tiger defense kept the Lions out of the end zone, but Langston made a 20-yard field goal to re-take the lead, 9-7.

On Lincoln's next possession, the Blue Tigers were forced to punt, and a 37-yard return set Langston up at the Lincoln 21. Three plays later, Langston hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass to go ahead, 16-7.

That was how the score would remain until the 4:19 mark of the fourth quarter, when Langston scored on a 34-yard touchdown reception. The Blue Tigers nearly scored on the drive before that, as Delvon Rouser hauled in a pass from Dennis Vinson on a run-pass option and out-ran the defense into the end zone. One of Lincoln's offensive linemen was a little too far downfield on the pass, however, and the play ended up being called back.

On Lincoln's first drive after Langston's score, C.J. Closser hauled in a 23-yard pass on a 4th-and-14 to move the Blue Tigers onto the Lions' side of the field. Vinson then connected with a Deonte Latimer on an 11-yard pass before finding Townsend in the end zone again for a 25-yard score. The Blue Tigers went for two to make it an eight-point game, but Vinson's pass was dropped by a Lincoln receiver.

Will Randolph led LU with 32 rushing yards while Reko Lysius was next with 22. Vinson threw for 124 yards and a pair of scores while Templeton averaged 60.5 yards on kickoffs and 36.3 yards on punts. Addison Tucker and Amani Nelson each made a team-high nine tackles while Jeff Jones made an interception and Isaiah Doss forced and recovered a fumble.

The Blue Tigers fall to 0-1 on the season while Langston improves to 1-0.

Winston-Salem State can't hold off UNC Pembroke

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State failed to close it out in its opener on Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium, and UNC Pembroke was more than happy to take advantage for a 20-17 come-from-behind victory in front of 4,500 fans.

“It’s disappointing,” said safety Cameron Sullivan, who had an early 28-yard interception return for the Rams. “We had it going in the first half. Then it happened.”

What happened was the Braves figured out quarterback Rod Tinsley and the offense in the second half, holding the Rams to just 17 plays and 40 total yards. The Rams’ defense, meanwhile, put in overtime as quarterback Patrick O’Brien of the Braves found plenty of openings.

Coach Kienus Boulware of the Rams watched his team enjoy a 17-3 lead at halftime, but that lead fell apart as the Braves grabbed the momentum and never let go.

“They caught a momentum swing in the second half and it was hard to stop them,” said Boulware, who has now lost four straight nonconference games going back to last season. “Offensively, we couldn’t get out and sustain a drive and do what we were doing in the first half. A mistake here and a mistake there cost us. It just didn’t swing our way.”

Gold Nuggets tame Mustangs in Big Easy Blastoff

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana produced four players with double-figure kills and four with double-figure digs Saturday in a 23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-17 volleyball victory against Southwest (N.M.) in the second annual Big Easy Blastoff at XULA's Convocation Center.
     
The Gold Nuggets won their only match of the day and finished fourth in the five-team standings at 1-2. They're 3-10 for the season.
     
XULA's Juliana Tomasoni, an all-tournament selection, produced her sixth double-double of the season. She had 17 kills, 15 digs, two blocks, an ace and hit .318. Monet Fontaine, Hasani Salaam and Terri Drake had 10 kills apiece, with Drake's total a career best. Amanda Perry had 19 digs — she increased to 12 her school-record of consecutive matches in double figures — Tiffany Phillips had 11, and Kaelan Temple had 10.
     
Phillips had 43 assists in her eighth assist/dig double-double of the season. Temple reached double figures for the third straight game; she had a career-best 14 digs in each of XULA's Friday matches.
     
Ashley Preuss and Shelby Bartley had 12 kills apiece for Southwest, and Kristin Silva had 21 digs.
     
XULA evened the match when Phillips, Fontaine and Drake closed the second set with kills. The Gold Nuggets rolled in the third set with the help of a 12-1 run, and they limited Southwest to minus-.031 hitting in the clinching set.
    
XULA outhit the Mustangs .215 to .138 for the match and had advantages of 51-45 in kills, 79-70 in digs and 7-5 in blocks. Both teams served six aces. Ralitsa Slanchev led the Gold Nuggets with a season-best two aces.
     
Southwest and Pikeville both finished 3-1 in the tournament. William Carey was 2-2, and SUNO was 0-3. In the other Saturday matches, Pikeville defeated William Carey 25-16, 25-9, 20-25, 25-17 and SUNO 25-15, 25-16, 25-21, and Southwest beat William Carey 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. For the season Southwest is 6-2, Pikeville is 8-2, William Carey is 2-5, and SUNO is 0-6.
     
Joining Tomasoni on the all-tournament team were Southwest's Bartley and Brenda Pargas, William Carey's Megan Zulli and Pikeville's Savanna Zakman and Sydney Hall. Zakman, a sophomore setter, was the MVP.
     
XULA, the five-time defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champion, will play its GCAC opener at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Tougaloo. The next home match will start at 5 p.m. Sept. 12 — one week from Monday — against GCAC opponent Philander Smith.

Southern tight end Dillon Beard emerges as a threat in Jaguars' 38-21 loss at ULM

MONROE, Louisiana -- Heading into Saturday's season opener at ULM, quite a few parts of Southern's offense were known commodities.

Senior running back Lenard Tillery was the workhorse of the unit. In a 38-21 loss at Malone Stadium, that proved to be true; Tillery did his part, running for 161 yards on 26 carries.

Senior wide receiver Willie Quinn was key to the passing game. That, too, was true: He had nine catches on 15 targets.

What wasn’t so obvious about the offense was tight end
Dillon Beard’s role in it all.

Beard, a first-year starter, only caught 10 passes last season for 102 yards and a pair of scores as the third option to starters Montrell Jones and Bradley Coleman.

But Jones and Coleman are gone, along with nearly every other bit of experience the Southern receiving corps had last season. Quinn and Randall Menard are the only returning receivers who recorded a catch last season, and Menard missed Saturday’s game with a lingering hamstring injury.

Southern fades in second half, drops season opener to Louisiana-Monroe 38-21

MONROE, Louisiana -- — Southern coach Dawson Odums was hopeful his team would play a meaningful fourth quarter against Louisiana-Monroe in Saturday’s season opener.

That happened, but the rest of Odums’ wish did not come true as the Jaguars faded in the second half of a 38-21 loss at ULM.

“You still were in the ballgame,” Odums said. “You’ve got to make plays.”

The Jaguars were outscored 24-9 in the second half as they allowed ULM to roll up more than 300 yards in the final 30 minutes.

ULM quarterback Garrett Smith threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns while adding 150 yards and a score on the ground. His previous career high in rushing yards was 38.

Despite the rough second half, the Jaguars did what their coach wanted them to do. With 8:11 remaining, they had made things interesting.

Willie Quinn beat his man in the middle of the field to catch a 9-yard touchdown pass from Austin Howard, capping a 71-yard drive that took only 2:37 and cut ULM’s lead to 10.

UTSA downs Alabama State in season opener, 26-13

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Dalton Sturm completed 20-of-25 passes en route to piling up 326 yards of total offense to lead UTSA to a 26-13 win against Alabama State on Saturday night at the Alamodome in the debut for head coach Frank Wilson.

The Roadrunners improved to 5-1 all-time in season openers in what was their first opening game at home since the inaugural contest against Northeastern State five years ago to the day.

"Winning feels fantastic. I'm so excited for our players, our program and this city" Wilson said. "The thing I told our team after postgame was be excited, man, we just won a game. They are hard to come by, so we'll take it how we can get it."

Sturm threw for 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added 52 yards on the ground, highlighted by a 51-yard score in the second quarter that put UTSA ahead for good.

Meanwhile, Josiah Tauaefa led the defense with 13 tackles, including nine solo and a pair of sacks, while Marcus Davenport also registered two sacks to help the Roadrunners set a school record with six as a team.

The game began when Eric Banks forced an Alabama State fumble on the opening kickoff that was recovered by Andrew Martel at the Hornets' 6-yard line. Three plays later, Sturm connected with Marquez McNair in the back of the end zone to give the home team an early 6-0 lead.



Alabama State answered when Khalid Thomas capped a 13-play, 77-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring plunge. The extra point put the visitors ahead 7-6.

The Roadrunners regained the lead with Sturm's long scamper down the right sideline. The Goliad native then found Greg Campbell Jr. on the two-point conversion to make it 14-6.

By the end of the first half, Sturm was 10-of-11 through the air.

UTSA extended its lead to start the second half. Jalen Rhodes ended a quick, six-play, 74-yard scoring march with a 1-yard TD run, but the extra point was wide left, leaving the score at 20-7.

The Roadrunners tacked on another score in the fourth when Sturm and Kerry Thomas Jr. hooked up on a 25-yard connection. The home team again went for two, but this time it failed.

With less than three minutes to play, a 36-yard TD pass from Quinterris Toppings to Palmer Graham provided the final 13-point margin.

UTSA will travel to Fort Collins, Colo. to face Colorado State (0-1) at 3 p.m. (CT) next Saturday, Sept. 10.

Savannah State Tigers’ new coach sees lessons in loss

STATESBORO, Georgia -- — Savannah State’s side of the scoreboard showed nothing Saturday night. But Tigers first-year coach Erik Raeburn hopes his team got something out of a 54-0 loss to Georgia Southern at Paulson Stadium.

SSU managed just 114 yards and eight first downs against a stingy Eagles defense.

The Tigers deepest penetration was GSU’s 33.

“Obviously, this was a tough game,” Raeburn said. “Hopefully for our guys, playing against (Georgia Southern), they’ll learn from this.”

Raeburn used three quarterbacks in the first half and each struggled against Georgia Southern’s underrated defense.

Senior Leon Prunty started but was sacked and fumbled during his two first-half possessions.

Blake Dever entered and immediately had some success thanks to a leaping catch over the middle by Cantrell Frazier for a 14-yard gain. Dever had a 15-yard completion to former Calvary star Derek Kirkland on the next possession.

TSU Tigers Trounce UAPB Lions, 44-0, in John Merritt Classic

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Tennessee State opened the 2016 season in dominating fashion as they shutout Arkansas-Pine Bluff 44-0 in the 18th Annual John Merritt Classic. The performance marked the first time the Tigers held an opponent scoreless in the JMC and the first time since defeating Butler 31-0 in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs in 2013.

The defense was able to hold the Golden Lions to 168 total yards and just 49 yards rushing. It is the lowest opponent total since holding Tennessee Tech to 150 yards on Sept. 20, 2014.


Ebenezer Ogundeko was named Defensive Player of the Classic after collecting two sacks and five tackles, four solos. The junior was in the UAPB backfield the entire game and was credited with a Quarter Back Hurry.

Offensively, the Tigers started slow and settled for a pair of field goals to take a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The junior hit from 43 and 23 yards out, before tacking on a 38-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Leading 6-0, the Tigers would get rolling as the opened their sixth possession with a 44-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive. Ronald Butler was able to tap the bomb from O’Shay Ackerman-Carter to himself just before entering the end zone for his first catch and receiving touchdown of his career.

The senior has played his first three seasons as a reserve quarterback for TSU. Butler started to receive reps at wide out early in camp.

The Tallahassee, Fla. native entered the game at quarterback with just over two minutes remaining in the third stanza. He went on to rush for 27 yards on three carries, including a 10 yard scoring run to make the produce the final score.

Ackerman-Carter was named the Classics Offensive Player of the Game as he hit seven separate receivers completing 18-of-32 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore teamed up with Patrick Smith for a 30-yard scoring play, giving the Tigers leading receiver from 2015 his first touchdown of the year and 11th in his career.

Smith pulled in six receptions for 100 yards to lead all receivers. Freshman Steven Newbold impressed in his debut as he pulled in five receptions for 74 yards.

On the ground, eight Tigers carried the ball totaling 202 yards on 38 carries. Erick Evans topped the Big Blue with 67 yards on 13 touches. TSU also received a solid performance from true-freshman Sabree Curtis who ran for 48 yards on seven attempts. Evans and Curtis each crossed the goal line for the Big Blue.

Evans entered the end zone 31 seconds before half time to give TSU a 20-0 lead heading into the break.

The Tigers opened second half by kicking out of bounds giving UAPB the ball on their own 48. The Golden Lions would work their way down to the 13 yard line and faced a 4th and one. Ogundeko was the first to hit Brandon Duncan, before Chris Collins and a slew of Tiger defenders joined in to stuff the UAPB runner short and turning the ball over on downs.

TSU did not waste the defensive stand as they marched down the field for a nine play, 87 yard drive, which was capped off by Smith’s touchdown, extending the lead to 27-0.

The Tigers continued to attack UAPB on the next drive as Curtis made the score 34-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Mitchell Boudreaux popped up a shallow kick allowing Trevion Duncan a clear shot at the ball carrier, forcing a fumble. Blair Edwards came up with the ball, which led to Clark’s final field goal of the evening and a 37-0 advantage.

The Tigers improve to 1-0 and will head to Memphis next week for a matchup with Jackson State in the Southern Heritage Classic.

Mistakes costly for Morgan State football in season-opening 51-24 loss to Holy Cross

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- Running back Orlando Johnson hobbled from the Morgan State locker room wearing a gray T-shirt with "BELIEVE" — the Bears' mantra for 2016 — printed on the back.

Doesn't that word ring hollow after Morgan State's 51-24 football loss to Holy Cross at Hughes Stadium on Saturday?

"We believe," insisted Johnson, who rushed for two touchdowns in the Bears' opener. "We made some stupid errors. This was a learning experience, and the [loss] is already behind us."

The 51 points were the most Morgan State has allowed since its second game last season, when it fell to Illinois State, 67-14. It was a rude christening for Fred Farrier, 44, the Bears interim head coach who played at Holy Cross.

"It is what it is," Farrier said of the rout by his alma mater. "When we get the opportunity to do that, we'll do it, too."

Early on, Morgan State held its own and led 17-14 midway through the second quarter. But the Crusaders reeled off 30 straight points and kept the Bears at bay for more than 30 minutes. Quarterback Peter Pujals passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns as Holy Cross amassed 498 yards of total offense.

North Carolina A&T Aggies Breeze to Season-Opening Victory

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – There was great anticipation about the 2016 North Carolina A&T football season because many wanted to know what the Aggies follow-up act would look like coming off one of the best season’s in program history.

The truth is, after the Aggies 62-0 drubbing of Division II Saint Augustine’s Saturday night at Aggie Stadium, that anticipation still exist. The Falcons (0-1) were so overmatched it is hard to gauge whether there is an encore performance of 2015 coming in 2016.

“I’m not sure what we learned from this (game) as far as our team is concerned other than the fact that we did what we set out to do and that’s dominate. And we should because we’re a level above them, so we should be able to compete and beat those guys pretty good,” said N.C. A&T head coach Rod Broadway after seeing his team score 40 or more points against a Division II opponent for the fourth straight time.

There was some indication that the Aggies are ready to compete for another MEAC title. Broadway thought his team played a cleaner game than it did in the 2015 season opener in terms of execution and effort, even as the Aggies came away with a 61-7 win over Division II Shaw in that one.

N.C. A&T’s passing game was effective. Sophomore starting quarterback Lamar Raynard connected on 17 of his 21 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore backup Kylil Carter was 5-fo-7 for 70 yards and a touchdown and senior Oluwafemi Bamiro threw his first career touchdown pass, an 8-yarder to Deshaun McFadden. If Broadway had his druthers, his senior playmaking All-American running back Tarik Cohen would have received more touches. With the Falcons bringing their safety closer to the line of scrimmage, however, he understood why the Aggies had to throw it 29 times.

Cohen did get enough touches to break another school record. Cohen rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. His two touchdowns gave him 42 for his career, leap frogging him past Stoney Polite’s 41 for the new school record. Cohen has 40 rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns in his career. All 41 of Polite’s touchdowns were rushing touchdowns, therefore, he still owns the rushing touchdown record, one ahead of Cohen.

“I feel like I got enough touches,” said Cohen. “I had two touchdowns. I know the team wants to have me for the rest of the season, so we don’t want any stupid injuries getting in the way of that.”

While Cohen didn’t have his normal standout game, the N.C. A&T defense was true to form. They held the Falcons to 159 yards of offense and forced four turnovers. All four of those turnovers led to touchdowns as the Aggies scored nine TD’s on the day.

In fact, the Falcons turned the ball over on each of their first two possessions. Junior Joshua Patrick caused the first mishap by blitzing SAU quarterback Darryl Johnson from the outside. Patrick rushed the passer unblocked, sacked Johnson, and forced the ball out of his hands. Sophomore Julius Reynolds fell on it at the SAU 18-yard line. Three plays later, Cohen sprinted through a huge hole to score the Aggies first touchdown.

On SAU’s next possession, Johnson connected with Sam Boyd across the middle. It was a bad place for him to be as senior Angelo Keyes came running full speed toward Boyd, collided with him and forced the fumble. Senior Malik Hampton-Prioleau fell on the football, leading to Raynard finding Angelo’s little brother Denzel Keyes on a diving 5-yard touchdown reception for a 14-0 Aggies lead.

“It’s been two weeks since we really competed against each other but I thought the guys were focused and we were able to make plays,” said Broadway. “We didn’t get anybody hurt, so that was big for us too.”

It is big because the Aggies will be the underdog playing a team at a higher level next week when it faces Division I-FBS Kent State 6 p.m., Saturday at Dix Stadium.

Miami ushers in Mark Richt era by crushing Florida A&M

MIAMI, Florida -- The Mark Richt Era began with a flourish Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium, as the Miami Hurricanes made Richt’s homecoming a joyous one by crushing Florida A&M 70-3.

Miami scored 42 points in the third quarter, a UM record for one quarter, to reach the 70-point mark — six points shy of the most ever allowed by the Rattlers and the most ever scored by a Richt-coached team.

It was Miami’s third largest margin of victory ever and only the fourth time it scored at least 70 points.

“Very thankful for the victory,” Richt said. “I'll just say this: I really, really like it here.”
