Loyd, Mart receive NAIA All-America honorable mention

Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketballNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's William Loyd and Rayshawn Mart received honorable mention Thursday on the 2018-19 NAIA Division I All-America men's basketball team.

It's the 11th time in 13 seasons that the NAIA All-America Committee recognized Gold Rush athletes in this sport. It's the second straight year that XULA has a pair of honorees.

Loyd is a 6-foot-5 junior forward from Baton Rouge, La., and a former Madison Preparatory Academy and Spring Hill (Ala.) College standout. In 2018-19 he became the first Gold Rush player since 2005 to lead the team in scoring and rebounding in the same season Loyd averaged 14 points and 6.2 rebounds. Loyd also led his team in field-goal percentage (.596), games played (32) 20-point games (6) and double-doubles (3). Loyd was second-team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Mart is a 6-3 sophomore guard from Houma, La., and a former H.L. Bourgeois High School standout. He was XULA's No. 2 scorer (12.1) and rebounder (5.1) for the second consecutive season. Mart was second-team All-GCAC.

Mart scored last-second points three times in the first 13 games, including an offensive rebound and dunk with 2.7 seconds remaining Nov. 5 in a home victory against William Carey, an eventual NAIA national semifinalist.

All-time XULA has produced 20 athletes who accounted for one first-team All-America selection, four third-team selections and 19 honorable mentions.

XULA was 18-14 this season, finishing fourth in the GCAC regular season and reaching the semifinals of the GCAC Tournament.
