B-CU's Brian Jenkins puts student before athlete

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Brian Jenkins makes no secret about how badly he's pining for a championship.

Just a few days before his Bethune Cookman University football team rebounded from a 21-0 deficit to beat Alabama State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Sunday, Jenkins told reporters during his first weekly press conference that he was less than impressed with his 18-5 record he'd built during his first two years as the head coach.

"I hate those five games we lost more than the 18 games we won," Jenkins quipped toward me when I asked him if he was content with his early tenure with the Wildcats football program. "Whenever I become satisfied with 8-3 seasons then I need to get out of coaching."

Normally, that type of response would make me nervous. In today's morally challenged environment of college sports, that answer reeks of a power hungry leader willing to sacrifice anything to win. Thankfully, that's not the case with Jenkins.

Lincoln comes to Wofford as a willing opponent

WOFFORD, South Carolina - Wofford head coach Mike Ayers has been asked the question since the football schedule was released in February.  Who is Lincoln?

And while Ayers is perhaps tempted to sarcastically answer “16th president of the United States,” he has to explain that Lincoln University is an NCAA Division II school near Philadelphia. The Lions play in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and will be Wofford's opponent at 7 p.m. Saturday in the home opener at Gibbs Stadium.

“People said, ‘What do you know about them?' ” Ayers said. “I told them, ‘Nothing right now because we haven't played Gardner-Webb yet.' ”

Wofford, No. 10 in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, took care of Gardner-Webb, 34-7, in last week's season opener. Lincoln, picked sixth in a preseason CIAA poll, lost to rival Cheyney (Pa.) 34-21, despite 363 passing yards and nearly doubling the opposition in total yards. Eight turnovers, including five lost fumbles, were the Lions' undoing.

WSSU basketball adds two players

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - Winston-Salem State has added two late signees in men's basketball — Michel-Ofik Nzege, a 6-foot-8 wing from Switzerland, and Kevin Powell, a 6-7 post player and junior-college transfer from Fayetteville.

"We were able to get Michel-Ofik late, and he'll be a welcome addition," said coach Bobby Collins, who didn't lose any starters from the team that won the 2012 CIAA title. "We've got 15 players on our roster and a 16th (JuCo transfer Maurice Nash) will be eligible for second semester."

Nzege, who played last season at Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham, was being recruited by several Division I schools but didn't have the required grades, Collins said. Old Dominion and Xavier made hard pushes late in the recruiting process.

MEAC time: S.C. State begins Bethune-Cookman preparation

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina - No rest on Labor Day is a common practice for the South Carolina State coaching staff under Buddy Pough.

The Rowe Hall offices were especially active Monday morning as the Bulldogs turned their complete attention to Saturday’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opening opponent — Bethune-Cookman. Much like last Thursday’s game won by S.C. State over Georgia State 33-6, Pough emphasized the “sense of urgency” with this matchup, particularly against a Wildcats’ team which has enjoyed success in recent years at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

“As I said earlier, it’s live or die,” said Pough during Monday’s press conference. “It’s pretty much like it was last week against Georgia State. We had to win that game and this situation is very, very similar. I’m pretty sure they’ll (Bethune-Cookman) say the same thing.”

The coaching staff received high praise from Pough for the game plan against Georgia State. S.C. State tallied 488 total yards on offense and collected six sacks and two turnovers on defense as Pough believed his team accomplished the rare feat of “outcoaching and outplaying” their opponent.

Florida A&M's Kevin Elliott earns spot on Jaguars roster

ORLANDO, Florida - There is really only one thing harder than sitting around waiting for a phone to ring. That has to be sitting around waiting for a phone to not ring. That was Kevin Elliott’s predicament Friday night as NFL teams began cutting their rosters down to the 53-man minimum by the 9 p.m. deadline.

Elliott, the former Orlando Colonial High and Florida A&M standout, has been working as a free-agent wide receiver in the Jacksonville Jaguars camp ever since being signed by the Jaguars one day after the NFL Draft in April.



He had an extremely strong preseason camp, during which he had two touchdown catches in preseason games, including a 77-yarder against Atlanta on Friday night. Then it was time to wait. The Jags told Elliott that if he didn’t hear his phone ring by 9 p.m., Saturday, he was safe. The problem was, his phone kept ringing. And ringing.

“Ah man it was crazy,” Elliott said of hearing his phone ring constantly Saturday night as the hours ticked away.

Alabama A&M notebook: Lacey injuries ankle

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Alabama A&M running back Kaderius Lacey, a first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason pick, left Saturday's game with an ankle injury late in the second quarter and never returned.

Lacey suffered a sprain right ankle midway through the first half, but returned to the game with just over a minute left in the quarter. He finished the game with 47 yards on 12 carries.

"I tried to go back in and play, but I couldn't go 100 percent," Lacey said. "I believe I made the best decision for me and the team."

Lacey said he planned to be back next week when A&M opens SWAC play at Arkanas-Pine Bluff.

Bethune-Cookman rallies for 38-28 win in MEAC/SWAC Challenge

ORLANDO, Florida - Bethune-Cookman started the college football season a little later than the rest of the country. After spotting Alabama State 21 points Sunday in the eighth installment of the annual MEAC-SWAC Challenge at the Florida Citrus Bowl, the Wildcats roared back to claim a convincing 38-28 win in front of an announced crowd of 17,410.

B-CU forced three turnovers in the second half and outgained Alabama State 551-351 in total offense to score the comeback victory.  "We told our guys not to flinch and to keep believing in what we do," Bethune-Cookman coach Brian Jenkins said of the deficit. "We had no doubt in our mind that this was going to be a 15-round fight. That's what we expected and that's what we got."

The Wildcats took the lead with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter behind the stellar play of reserve quarterback Brodrick Waters. Waters called his own number on an option and scored from 6 yards to put B-CU out front 24-21.

Alabama State football loses its sting against Bethune-Cookman in MEAC-SWAC Challenge

ORLANDO, FLA. — A lot of things needed to go in Alabama State’s favor for the Hornets to win Sunday’s MEAC-SWAC Challenge battle with Bethune-Cookman at the Citrus Bowl.

For much of the first half, the Hornets were clicking, but a 21-point lead evaporated in a rash of mistakes and a strong Bethune-Cookman rushing attack as the Wildcats rallied to take a convincing 38-28 victory over the Hornets in front of 17,410 fans and an ESPN audience in the black college season opening showcase.

It was hard to tell what was more disappointing, a defense that surrendered 272 yards in a 34-minute stretch that included all of the second half and the final four minutes of the first half or an offense that managed just two first downs and 37 total yards from that same stretch late in the first half until midway through the fourth quarter, when the outcome was already decided.

“I was disappointed in both,” said Alabama State head coach Reggie Barlow. “Defensively, the best player on their team was the quarterback at one point, and no one was accounting for him. That’s disappointing and certainly something we have to correct.

North Alabama preserves 31-30 win over Miles with goal-line stand

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- UNA's Rod Woodson dropped Miles College running back Jordan Lewis one foot from the goal line on a two-point conversion with just 15 seconds remaining Sunday night to halt a dramatic Miles comeback and give his team a 31-30 win in the Labor Day Golden Classic at Legion Field.

It was a triumphant return to North Alabama for head coach Bobby Wallace, but it was a victory that in the second half may have had him pondering if he should have stayed retired. A game that had been a 24-7 yawner at halftime indeed turned into a classic.



Miles had battled back to tie the game 24-24 with 3:09 remaining when Patton Chambers kicked a 29-yard field goal, but the comeback finally awakened the visitors. UNA quarterback Chris Alexander led his team on a 14-play drive that ended when he tossed a 40-yard scoring strike to Brian Southerland with 1:05 left in the game.

Miles wasn't finished, however. Quarterback David Thomas hit passes of 22, 11, 13 and 13 yards to get his team in scoring range. Thomas hit Lonnie Outlaw on a 19-yard scoring strike with 15 seconds left to put Miles within a point.

Stillman scores three TDs in fourth quarter to win

DAYTON, Ohio| The Stillman College football team opened the season with a come-from-behind 28-27 victory in the 8th Dayton Classic. Both teams struggled coming out of halftime, each putting together drives that failed to produce points.

The offensive output came in the fourth period as Central State scored on a 28-yard pass play to build a 20-7 lead. Stillman answered, ending a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard run by LaKevin Camp. CSU scored on a 95-yard pass play giving the Marauders a 27-14 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.



Stillman needed four minutes to cut the lead to six points at 27-21 with 4:54 left. Backup quarterback Josh Straughan put together a nine-play, 69-yard drive, capping the endeavour with an 11-yard pass play to Damian Ford.

Once Stillman regained possession, Straughan found Damian Ford, this time on a 2-yard pass play with just under two minutes remaining. Camp led the Tigers’ rushing attack with 17 carries for 56 yards and a score. Ford caught five passes for 79 yards and two scores while Reese Sturgis and Dondre Purnell each had two receptions for 46 and 36 yards, respectively.

NSU Spartans' linebackers pick up where they left off in 2011

NORFOLK, Virginia - After linebacker-led Norfolk State won the MEAC championship in 2011, senior Corwin Hammond proclaimed the Spartans "Linebacker U." Even with Hammond's departure, NSU has lived up to its newly proclaimed reputation.

On Saturday, during a 24-0 win over Virginia State in each team's season opener, the Spartans trotted out linebackers as three of their four captains.  Like last year, the Spartans won with defense. Like last year, linebackers led the way.

Senior Jamal Giddens came out in the second half with dehydration and still finished with seven tackles, 4 1/2 for loss, two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles, all of which came when the game was still tight.  "I feel like the linebacker unit gets better every year," Giddens said. "After the season, I felt like we might lose a step. But after spring ball, I felt great."

Giddens was Norfolk State's best player and the primary reason NSU led 10-0 at halftime. His sack and strip of Virginia State quarterback Jarred Battle gave NSU its first, and only, touchdown of the first half.

Lincoln's Cook throws for 345 yards in loss to rival Cheyney

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pennsylvania — Doug Cook (Dania Beach, Fla./University School of Nova SE University) threw for 345 yards and one touchdown, but the Lincoln University football team dropped its second straight Battle of the First rivalry game on Saturday afternoon as the Lions fell to Cheyney, 34-21, at Lincoln University Stadium.

“This was a tough loss, but our team is mentally tough,” Lincoln head coach O.J. Abanishe said. “Many of them have been through much more in life.”

Cheyney (1-0), which finished with 229 total yards, including 207 on the ground, scored a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter on runs by Justin Watkins and Jay Journigan. The Wolves added to the margin in the second quarter on a Marcus Jones run as Cheyney took a 20-0 advantage into the break.

Lincoln (0-1) fell behind 27-0 early in the third quarter as Triston Dillon went 99 yards on a fumble return, but the Lions quickly answered when Tyahir Mitchell (Wilmington, Del./Howard High School of Tech) scooped up a lateral and went 68 yards for the second, cutting the deficit to 27-7.

The Lions, who racked up 419 total yards of offense, continued to close the gap when Matt Coston caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Cook with 10:50 remaining as Lincoln trailed, 27-14.

After a Cheyney touchdown extended the advantage to 34-14, Coston added his second touchdown reception of the afternoon – a 15-yard catch - from Lincoln backup quarterback Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa.) with 2:02 remaining, but that was as close as the Lions would get.

Cook was 30-of-51 passing, while Charles Green (Coatesville, Pa.) was 2-for-2 for 18 yards. Coston finished with 11 catches for 125 yards to lead all Lincoln receivers. Philip Jean-Juste (Miami, Fla. /North Miami Beach HS) had 79 yards on seven catches. Gerald Swain (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS) led the ground game with 28 yards on 13 carries. Defensively, Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) recorded a game-high nine solo tackles and finished with 10 total tackles. He also added four quarterback hurries and one sack.

Jones paced the Cheyney ground attack with 85 yards on 21 carries. Blaze Wasserleben had 12 rushes for 92 yards. In the air, Wasserleben was 3-of-6 for 22 yards. Isaiah Fleming and Shannon Burch each had eight tackles to lead the Wolves.

The two teams, which were trying to shake off the early season rust, combined for 39 penalties for nearly 400 yards.

Lincoln returns to action 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 in Spartanburg, S.C., against FCS Division I member Wofford College.

West Virginia State 34, Johnson C. Smith 31

INSTITUTE, West Virginia - West Virginia State opened the 2012 campaign with a 34-31 victory over visiting Johnson C. Smith Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets scored 21 in the first quarter, grabbing a 14-point advantage at the end of one.

LeFloyd Phillips completed a nine-play, 70-yard drive to open the scoring. The visitors answered with 2:12 left in the first stanza. With just 61 seconds left in the first quarter, Ervin Kent hauled in a pass from Ricky Phillips for a 73-yard score for the Yellow Jackets. Then, Deraughn Brown scored on a pass from Phillips just 16 seconds later for a 21-7 lead with 55 seconds to play in the first.

JCSU reeled off 16 straight points, taking a 23-21 lead with 12:23 to go in the third quarter. However, head coach Earl Monroe’s team answered with 13 straight points to secure the victory.

Aubura Taylor scampered for a nine-yard touchdown run with 2:31 to play in the third. He then scored on a three-yard run with 8:24 to go in the contest.

Albany State Defense Dominates North Greenville

ALBANY, Georgia - A unique opportunity awaited the Albany State football team on Saturday night.

Dismissed by North Greenville in the 2011 playoffs, the Golden Rams got another shot at the Crusaders at the ASU Coliseum and the “Dirty Blue” defense set the tone for the 2012 season.

Albany State slowed down North Greenville for a 24-12 season opening victory. The Golden Rams held the Crusaders to three points in the first half.

Running back Nathan Hoyte set the pace with a 47-yard touchdown run in the first quarter giving ASU a 7-0 lead. The Golden Rams never trailed North Greenville only 10 months after allowing 63 points to the Crusaders in the Division Two playoffs.

Concordia-Selma scores on blocked punt return, late TD to top Mississippi Valley State 20-19

ITTA BENA, Mississippi — Concordia-Selma scored on a blocked punt return, then capitalized on two late missed extra points to upset Mississippi Valley State 20-19 Saturday night in a non-conference opener for both teams.

The NAIA Hornets, who trailed 7-0 after Garrick Jones’ 9-yard scoring pass to Dytanyl Greer, scored twice in the second quarter. Keith Ray threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Morris. Then Demarcus Heath returned a blocked MVSU punt 36 yards for a 13-7 halftime lead.

Early in the third quarter, Robert Simpson recovered a Hornets’ fumble in the end zone to tie the game. But Carlos Sanchez’s extra point was blocked. Late in the quarter, Trey Bateaste scored on a 3-yard run to regain the lead for MVSU. But Sanchez missed the point after and it was 19-13.

ECSU routed by Newberry in season opener

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- After the two teams traded early touchdowns, Newberry College scored 30 unanswered points as it handed Elizabeth City State a 46-20 defeat in the season opener for both football teams Saturday at Newberry.

Brian Spencer OF Newberry opened the scoring with a 40-yard return of an intercepted Namon Jones pass and ECSU responded with a 13-play, 77-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard run by Jones to even it at 7-7 with 8:15 left in the first period.

But for the next two quarters-plus, it was all Newberry.

Newberry rolls past Elizabeth City State, 46-20

NEWBERRY — Brian Spencer returned an interception on the season’s second play from scrimmage for a 40-yard touchdown to set the tone, as the Newberry Wolves rolled to a 46-20 victory over Elizabeth City State in both teams’ season opener at Setzler Field on Saturday night.

Newberry moves to 1-0 on the season and hosts Shorter next Saturday at 6:30 p.m., while the 0-1 Vikings host Delta State for a 6 p.m. kick.

The Wolves made the Vikings pay for early turnovers to pull ahead in the first quarter. After ECSU tied the game on its second possession of the game on a Namon Jones 4-yard quarterback keeper, the Newberry offense took over for its first drive of the game. W.T. Murden went 3-for-3 on the drive with an excellent 40-yard pass to Jason Livingston capping off a 4-play, 65-yard scoring drive to make it 13-7 after a missed PAT.

A.J. Booker recovered a Jones fumble on the second play of the next drive at the Viking 24, and Newberry needed just two plays to make it a 20-7 lead on a 13-yard scoring pass from Murden to Corey Washington.

After forcing ECSU to punt, the offense encountered its first resistance, with the drive stalling at the Newberry 30. JoJo Morris boomed a 45-yard punt and Arnez Gray forced a fumble on the return which was recovered by Lance Richardson at the Viking 30. Just four plays later and two plays into the second quarter, a John Gadson 3-yard TD carry made it a 27-7 lead.

Virginia Union Trojans defeats Benedict Tigers

RICHMOND, Virginia - Senior running back Jerrell Washington rushed for two touchdowns, including a 59-yarder in the fourth quarter, as Virginia Union opened its 2012 season with a 28-7 win over Benedict at Hovey Field.

Quarterback Kenneth Graham was 14 for 27 for 154 yards and connected with Devin Anderson for a 36-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Panthers a lead they never relinquished.

Rasheen Person had 10 tackles and two sacks to pace Virginia Union's defense.

Hillary Leads Coastal Carolina To Season-Opening Win Over North Carolina A&T

CONWAY, South Carolina - Senior quarterback Aramis Hillary threw for one score and ran for another from a yard out to lead Coastal Carolina to a season-opening 29-13 win over North Carolina A&T Saturday night at Brooks Stadium. Hillary finished the game with a career-high 274 yards on 19-28 completions and gave rookie head coach Joe Moglia his first win on the Chanticleers' sideline.

Hillary threw 33 yards for a score to junior receiver Matt Hazel early in the third quarter to put Coastal on top 24-10. After that, Coastal fed senior running back Jeremy Height, who responded with a career high 109 yards on 20 carries that included a first half scoring run of 22 yards.

Coastal led from the 4:49 mark of the first quarter when Hillary pushed his way into the end zone from a yard away. And following Dontavais Johnson's second interception of the half, Coastal moved again to score quickly. Height's scoring run capped a 57-yard drive made the score 14-0 at the close of the first quarter and the Chanticleers looked like they were on their way to an easy win. But the Coastal didn't put the Aggies away until the fourth quarter.



The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter before North Carolina A&T drove 72 yards to score on a 23-yard pass play with just three seconds left in the half to make the score 17-10.

Hazel's scoring reception helped Coastal regain the momentum to start the second half, as it finished off a 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive.

Junior receiver Niccolo Mastromatteo helped the offense with a career high 114 receiving yards on seven catches, including two of more than 30 yards. Defensively, Johnson grabbed a third interception late in the game and junior linebacker Mike McClure led the way with 12 tackles.

Oklahoma State football: Cowboys dismantle Savannah State, 84-0

STILLWATER, Oklahoma — It was as ugly as advertised.

But as efficient as Oklahoma State could have hoped against a clearly inferior team.
As expected, the No. 19 Cowboys throttled Savannah State 84-0 in their season opener Saturday, setting modern-day school records for points scored in a game and largest margin of victory.

“At times, I saw our (defensive) guys running across the field fast,” coach Mike Gundy said. “I hope that holds true throughout the season. We were able to function on offense at a quick pace (with) the new quarterback (Wes Lunt), so I was pleased with that early in the game.”

What matters, though, is how those scores piled on.

The Cowboys (1-0) put together 10 touchdown drives that each lasted fewer than two minutes. They amassed nine rushing touchdowns, a school record, and compiled 395 yards on 42 carries. It held SSU (0-1) to 139 yards of total offense.

And in true freshman starting quarterback Wes Lunt's debut, he was perfect, connecting on all 11 passes for 129 yards in just four drives. It was the first time in OSU history that a quarterback completed 100 percent of his passes with a minimum of 10 attempts.

WSSU holds on to beat UNC Pembroke

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - Ninth-ranked Winston-Salem State took UNC Pembroke's best shot Saturday night and survived for a 28-23 victory at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Defensive back Larry Hearne played a key role for the Rams, intercepting two passes and knocking down a Luke Charles pass to the end zone on the game's last play. "I just tried to come out and play hard and do my job," said Hearne, a junior making his first career start.

On the final play, with five seconds left from the Rams' 39, Charles had single coverage on his best receiver, Te'vell Williams, but just underthrew the ball.

"I saw the ball, and I tried to knock it down," Hearne said. "If I would have tried to intercept that, coach (Connell) Maynor would have probably met me out in the field and given it to me, so I knew to just knock it down."

Maynor said: "I told them to back up and knock the ball down and don't try and pick it off. We just told them to be smart and get back there and knock it down, and Larry did that."

WINSTON-SALEM – Visiting UNCP amassed nearly 400 yards of total offense, but ninth-ranked Winston-Salem State tallied a pair of momentum-changing interceptions and stopped a potential game-winning drive to hold off the Braves, 28-23, on Saturday evening at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Junior Te’vell Williams hauled in eight catches for 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace the Braves (0-1) who also got 94 rushing yards (17 carries) and a third quarter score from Damonte Terry. Luke Charles threw for 281 yards on 32-of-46 passing with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions for the Black & Gold as well.

Maurice Lewis rushed for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 27 carries for Winston-Salem State (1-0) who improved to 3-0 all-time against UNC Pembroke. Jamal Williams caught five passes for 103 yards, while Kameron Smith completed 15 of his 22 pass attempts for 190 yards and a second quarter scoring toss.

Langston Edged by Last Second Field Goal against Div 1-AA UAPB

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas  -  After a quiet first quarter on offense from both teams, the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff managed to break the scoring drought with a 19-yard touchdown run by running back Dennis Jenkins. UAPB quarterback Ben Anderson ran an option play to the left side, pitching the ball to Jenkins late, who scampered into the endzone untouched with 7:39 left in the first half. Mother nature then made its presence felt in Little Rock. A storm passed through War Memorial Stadium, forcing the referees to halt play for 30 minutes until the weather cleared up.

After play resumed, Langston would quickly even up the score. Only a few minutes later in the 2nd quarter, the Lions answered with a 38 yard score to sophomore wide receiver Kyron King on a post route over the middle. Junior Lion quarterback Jac’Quon Miles delivered a perfectly timed strike, allowing King to extend for the ball and continue to the endzone unimpeded. Just as LU gained momentum, however, it was given right back to the Golden Lions of UAPB. With less than 4 minutes remaining in the half, UAPB drove down the field quickly and scored with 45 seconds left on a 33-yard pass to receiver Dezmond Beverly to give the Golden Lions a 14-7 lead after two quarters.

The third quarter passed by much like the first quarter, with neither team able to sustain a long drive. Midway through the third quarter, the Lions recovered a muffed punt deep in UAPB territory. The Lions could not capitalize as they committed two consecutive holding penalties that stalled their drive.



Langston took possession to begin the fourth quarter, and started on a 10 pay, 80 yard scoring drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown from Lion running back Will Taylor. Taylor’s touchdown tied the score at 14-14 with 10:44 remaining in the contest. UAPB was unable to answer the Lions scoring drive, and were forced to punt. Langston took the ball with 2:41 left in the game, with Miles looking to engineer a game winning drive. Starting on their own 19, the Lions marched into UAPB territory on a 14 yard reception to receiver Justin Robinson.

Langston looked to be in control, but two plays later Miles was sacked and fumbled. The ball was kicked backward deep into Langston territory, and was eventually recovered by UAPB defensive lineman Damien Lee at the Langston 25. Lee returned the fumble 6 yards to the LU 19, with only 1 minute remaining in the contest. UAPB was able to make a field goal as time expired, giving the Golden Lions a 17-14 victory.

Langston’s next football game will be its 2012 home opener against Bacone College. The game will be at 7:00 p.m. at W.E. Anderson Stadium.

NCCU 54, FSU 31: Eagles unveil historic attack behind new QB

DURHAM, North Carolina — N.C. Central time capitalized on another team’s turnovers — instead of being buried by its own — and beat Fayetteville State 54-31 in Saturday’s season opener.

The Eagles put 34 points on the board in the second half, a far cry from last year’s team that lacked the legs and overall stamina to finish games. NCCU handed down that punishing sentence in front of 9,077 at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, punctuating it with a 57-yard punt return by redshirt freshman Adrian Wilkins as the final seconds ticked off.

FSU put NCCU on its heels in the first quarter when the Eagles were punting from their own 38. FSU’s Joseph McLean blocked the punt, and teammate Christopher Person picked it up at the 2 and scored.  When these two squads last played each other in 2008, FSU scored on a blocked punt. FSU won that game 33-22 at NCCU.

NCCU coach Henry Frazier III said he’s not sure how last year’s team would have responded to getting punched like that, but he said the situation was the sort of thing he’s been preaching to the Eagles. 

“That’s what we talk about in practice,” Frazier said. “When something bad happens, do you hang your head, or do you go out there and try to make a play? And they went out there and they made a play.”

N.C. Central’s Irvine steals show as QB Goggans makes historic start in win

DURHAM -- N.C. Central quarterback Matt Goggans was making a historic start as the first white starting quarterback in Eagles’ history, but it was veteran wide receiver Geovonie Irvine who stole the show.

Irvine combined for 191 all-purpose yards, with 79 receiving and 112 return yards, along with two touchdowns to lead N.C. Central to a 54-31 win over CIAA opponent Fayetteville State Saturday.

The Broncos upset the Eagles four years ago in Durham, but in that game Irvine, a redshirt senior, was watching from the sidelines.  Saturday, the preseason All-American was so drained, he received IV fluids after the game.

N.C. Central coach Henry Frazier was high on adrenaline after his first home win as a coach. Frazier was caught doing a little jig as the clock wound down.

“It just feels good to get that first victory,” said Frazier who went 0-5 at home last season. “We needed to get off to a good start.”
