Six More Commit to Ford, TSU Basketball

NASHVILLE, Tennessee  --  On Friday, Tennessee State men’s basketball coach Dana Ford announced the signing of six more players to add to his recruiting class. Keron Deshields, Zachary Lee, Christian Mekowulu, Marcus Roper, Rodney Simeon and Charles Tucker all signed letters of intent and will be on next year’s roster.

“We are excited to add these fine young men to our basketball program here at Tennessee State University. They all possess the abilities to perform at a high level both in the classroom and on the floor. They are the future of Big Blue basketball and we couldn’t be happier about that,” Ford said.

Keron Deshields is a guard originally from Baltimore Maryland, but played the last three seasons at the University of Montana. Deshields played a big role in the Grizzlies clawing to a 17-13 mark this past season, averaging 11.8 points per contest and leading the team with 36 steals. Deshields was Honorable Mention All-Big Sky Conference a year ago and was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams during his freshman and junior seasons. He will have to sit out 2014-15 due to transfer rules.

Ford went all the way to New Mexico to snag Zachary Lee, who suited up for Eldorado HS in Albuquerque last year. Rated as the fifth-best prospect in the state by Full Court Press, Lee proved he could defend almost anyone while playing small forward, tallying 4.2 blocks per game. The 6-foot-8 wing also averaged 11 points and eight rebounds in both of his varsity years for coach Roy Sanchez, earning him All-State honors as a senior. Lee also attended Elev8 Sports Institute.

Christian Mekowulu

Christian Mekowulu is a power forward from Nigeria, but played high school basketball in Marietta, Ga. for Covenant Christian Ministries Academy. At 6-foot-8, Mekowulu will provide size to TSU’s front court and his ability to crash the glass (11 rebounds per game) will fit Ford’s defense-first style. Mekowulu can also score, as he improved his average from 10 points to 12.8 per contest from his junior to senior seasons. He was the 14^th best forward and 36^th best overall player from Ga. according to maxpreps.com.

 

Marcus Roper will transfer into the Tennessee State program after playing two years at New Mexico Military Institute JUCO. Last season, he averaged 15.8 points per contest while leading the team in blocks per game (1.2). The wing also shot 39 percent from beyond the three-point line and had nine 20-plus point games. One of those games was a 33 point and 10 rebound effort against Frank Phillips College. Roper played a significant role in NMMI increasing its win total by eight games between his freshman and sophomore campaigns.

As senior at Boyd Anderson HS in Florida last season, Rodeny Simeon averaged 15.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while captaining a team that went 25-6 including a 7-1 district mark. Simeon also led his team to a Final Four appearance in the 7A State Playoffs and No. 15 ranking in Fla.

 

Charles Tucker is a point guard from Lansing, Mich. that was rated a two-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals. He was selected to the 2011-12 USA Men's Developmental National Team comprised of the nation's top under-16 talents. As a junior at Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md., Tucker was selected to maxpreps.com’s 2013 Honor Roll after leading his team to a 19-5 record. Tucker played last season at ABCD Prep, a postgraduate school in Urbandale, Iowa.

 

The six signed on Friday plus previously inked Darreon Reddick, Xavier Richards and Christian Crockett give TSU nine incoming players for next season.

NEW ORLEANS -- Five from Xavier University of Louisiana, including a school-record four from the women's team, have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA All-Americans for the 2013-14 season.

Freshman Nour Abbes, sophomores Simone-Alyse Ewell and Brion Flowers and senior Kourtney Howell are the Gold Nuggets' All-Americans. Selected from the men's team was sophomore Kyle Montrel.  All five qualified for All-America by being top 20 in singles or top 10 in doubles in the ITA's postseason individual rankings.

Flowers, Howell and Montrel are repeat All-America selections. Howell was honored for the third consecutive year.

For the second straight year, the Gold Nuggets set program records for highest postseason national rankings. Abbes is No. 2 in singles, and Howell and Flowers are No. 2 in doubles. The previous postseason highs were No. 6 in singles by Howell and No. 3 in doubles by Howell and Flowers.

Howell is 13th in singles, and Abbes and Ewell are ninth in doubles. Also ranked nationally in singles are Nikita Soifer of the Gold Rush (26th) and Flowers (35th). Montrel and Soifer are 14th in doubles.

Abbes is from Tunis, Tunisia, and a graduate of Lycée Sportif d'El Menzah. Ewell is from Detroit and a graduate of The Roeper School. Flowers is from Lafayette, La., and a graduate of St. Thomas More High School. Howell is from Cypress, Texas, and a graduate of Cypress Woods High School. Montrel is from Atlanta and a graduate of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. Soifer is a junior from Beer Sheva, Israel, and a graduate of Hof Sasharon.

Xavier's women were 17-7 in 2014, reached the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship for the second consecutive year and ranked third in the postseason coaches poll. The men were 13-12, reached the national quarterfinals for the third straight year and ranked eighth.

Black college football heads to the Bahamas: Central State takes on Texas Southern

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the first time, two Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) will play a football game in Nassau, Bahamas.  HBCUX, a recently launched digital media network, and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism are teaming up to produce the inaugural"Bahamas HBCUX Classic."

HBCUX is planning a weekend of events this fall in Nassau highlighted by a football game and battle of the bands competition between Central State and Texas Southern Universities, preceded by a star-studded tailgate concert. The game will be held in Nassau's refurbished 15,000-seat, multi-purpose Thomas Robinson Stadium on Saturday, September 13, 2014.



HBCUX Network founded by President & CEO Curtis Symonds and General Manager & COO Clint Evans showcases the talent, diversity and value of HBCUs that have been around for 177 years.  "Bringing an HBCU football game to the Caribbean will truly be a unique experience on many different levels," Symonds said.

"This is the culmination of a dream, and a combination of 'out-of-the-box' thinking, hard work, commitment and faith on our part as well as the Minister of Tourism Obediah Wilchcombe and his staff to advance tourism in the Bahamas.  The game allows two HBCU presidents to provide a cultural experience for their students in addition to promoting their universities to a wider audience.  Paramount to this experience is allowing the Caribbean and international communities to see first-hand the educational value HBCUs have to offer." Symonds added that HBCUX Network is committed to hosting the event for the next three years.

Representing The Bahamas, the Permanent Secretary for the Bahamas Ministry of Financial Services Harrison Thompson said, "The Bahamas HBCUX Classic not only supports our goal to bring more people to our beautiful islands, but Bahamians can experience American football at home, and gain insight into what two HBCUs have to offer should one decide to continue their education in the United States."  Both schools will have staff available to speak to potential students during the weekend.

Symonds hopes to attract thousands of existing students, alumni and football enthusiasts to the inaugural Football Classic. Tickets to the game start at $25.00. HBCUX Network will be offering packages starting around $375.00 for a two-night hotel stay at the Atlantis resort, transfers, game tickets and a one month subscription to the HBCUX Network.

HBCUX Network headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a 24/7, education, entertainment, lifestyle and sports programming network. The programming includes original series, student productions, music, movies and specials. HBCUX Network is an advertiser and subscription supported service, with a portion of the proceeds generated going to scholarship funds to attend HBCUs.

Tone deaf NCAA deals FAMU a low blow

The penalties FAMU was forced to accept say far more about the NCAA than they do about Florida A&M University

TALLAHASSEE, Florida  -- Florida A&M University's two prime-time sports programs suffered a low blow a couple of weeks back when the NCAA ruled that the Rattlers' football and men's basketball teams will be banned from post-season competition during 2014-2015.

Student-athletes on those teams did not satisfy the APR (Academic Progress Rate) standards the NCAA instituted 10 years ago.

Shame on the NCAA for being tone deaf in a surround-sound world.

The well-staffed NCAA should know better than to take a one-size-fits-all approach to evaluating the hundreds of universities it governs.

Simply put, FAMU does not have the resources required to play the APR game. Not to diminish the value of what happens in the classroom, but APR numbers are not an accurate reflection of a school's student-athletes' academic performance.

Bethune-Cookman coach Brian Jenkins ready for MMA fight

The 5-foot-9 Jenkins could potentially have his face rearranged by the 6-foot Green.

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida  -- When Brian Jenkins and Chris Green meet in the middle of the cage Saturday night at Breakthrough MMA 12, they will be coming from very different backgrounds.

Jenkins, 43, is the head football coach of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.

 

Green, 27, is a cook at Joe's Crab Shack.

 

Perhaps as close as they will ever come to sharing common ground will be in the moments following the signal to start the fight because, for however long it takes to sort itself out, the cook and the coach are going to try to beat one another into submission.

 

“People are in disbelief that (Jenkins) is actually going to go in there and do this,” Breakthrough MMA Promoter Jason Arnett said. “But this is for real. This is the same Jenkins that led his team to a (MEAC) championship. People are just in awe.”

Green hopes to shock B-CU coach Brian Jenkins in MMA bout

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida  -- Chris Green knows the chips will be stacked against him when he steps into the cage to face Bethune-Cookman football coach Brian Jenkins in their mixed martial arts bout Saturday at Breakthrough MMA 12.

Jenkins is a rare athlete, good enough to earn a scholarship to play at Cincinnati, where he set a few records. He even had some pro football looks after college.

 

Green went to Mainland, took a few classes at Daytona State and is currently a cook at Joe's Crab Shack.

UNCG and N.C. A&T will play home-and-home in 2015-16 and 2016-17

GREENSBORO, North Carolina  --  UNCG and N.C. A&T's men's basketball programs reached a verbal agreement to play a home-and-home in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

The two schools are working on the contract and couldn't work out scheduling to play next season. The Spartans will travel to N.C. A&T's Corbett sports Center in the 2015-16 season, and the Aggies will play UNCG in the Coliseum in 2016-17.
“We ought to be playing that game every year," Record said. "I can’t speak for A&T, because obviously the Coliseum is our home court, but the opportunity to have a maximum of 21,000 people see our two community teams play to me is a bigger impact than playing in a smaller venue on each other's campus. But again, they value playing at home and I respect that. We’re looking forward to playing there.”

UNCG and N.C. A&T didn't play this season for the first time since the 2009-10 season.  The two teams didn't play from the 2002-03 season until the 2010-11 season.

Elizabeth City State University Chancellor Becton declares ECSU a “Beacon of Hope”

ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina  -- The North Carolina Senate is considering a budget provision that would dissolve constituent institutions with large declines in student enrollment. That decision could impact Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). This provision has not passed the NC House nor the NC Senate. It has not been signed into law.

“In my view, ECSU is, and will remain, a vital part of the University of North Carolina system. It has always been the premier four-year educational, economic, and cultural entity in northeastern North Carolina,” said Chancellor Charles Becton.

ECSU is a force for growth in northeastern North Carolina, bringing education, jobs, grants, and cultural events to a part of the state that has been historically underdeveloped. ECSU is the third-largest employer in the region, and its total economic impact on the Elizabeth City community is 118 million in output sales, 83 million in value added (gross regional product), and 59 million in labor income. The university provides 64.06% of the elementary and 38.46% of the secondary teachers for our geographic area. Over 60% of our students come from the 21 counties in northeastern North Carolina, and most of them, upon graduation, remain in the area filling much-needed jobs.

We have seen a decline in our enrollment during the past four years, but we are working hard to reverse that trend. Even at our current size, we are larger than hundreds of universities in this country and several in this state. Efforts are currently underway to right size the university and to develop signature areas to attract more students.

During the school year, even with a $4+ million budget deficit and an enrollment decline this academic school year we had our largest fall and spring graduation classes.

“During this year, when naysayers question our worth, we have been recognized nationally for our educational and other offerings,” Becton said.

For the second year in a row, ECSU was ranked #1 among baccalaureate colleges in one of Washington Monthly’s College rankings. We were ranked number one in the Top Public School Regional Colleges (South) category by U.S. News & World Report’s 2014 edition and #18 among the nation’s 100+ Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In 2014, ECSU was ranked seventh best out of the Top 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) where college freshman return after their first year. (U.S. News and World Report 2014); ECSU ranked #3 among the top 10 greenest historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) in the public institution category. (Building Green Initiative, 2014). ECSU has the lowest tuition among UNC system schools, and we represent one of the best values in education. ECSU will continue to be a beacon of hope for those wanting access to education and an enhanced opportunity for a better future.

N.C. Senate to consider closing Elizabeth City State University

RALEIGH, North Carolina  -- The North Carolina Senate’s proposed $21 billion budget would have the University of North Carolina system shut down “small, unprofitable” Elizabeth City State University.

ECSU, a historically black school in the northeast corner of the state, reports an enrollment of 2,421, including 2,155 full-time students. Among its students, 1,777 are black, 380 are white, according to the school’s website. North Carolina residents account for 2,163 students and the average SAT score is 889. Entering students have a 3.15 high school grade point average.

The proposal is the latest turn by Republican leaders to trim the UNC system. Last year, Gov. Pat McCrory suggested merging or closing campuses as well as eliminating course offerings to save money. That tone rankled HBCU alumni and supporters who fear the state will target the state’s black colleges, which generally are smaller and perennially underfunded compared to their larger peers.

A study published last month by University of Pennsylvania researchers found that North Carolina’s public black colleges have struggled to keep recover from the recession of 2008, which led to deep cuts in state funding. With a higher proportion of first-generation and low-income students on campus, HBCU enrollments have fallen or remained stagnant over the last five years.

ECSU enrollment has dropped from 3,307 in the 2010-11 academic year to 2,421 in 2013-14.

Students laptops stolen from Christiana Towers one day before start of UD final exams

NEWARK, Delaware  -- Five Delaware State University students, three of who are active members of the school’s football team and two who no longer play for the team, have been arrested in connection with two separate burglaries at the University of Delaware.

The men were identified by University of Delaware Police as Rashawn G. Barrett, 20, of Montclair, N.J., Malik Golson, 19, of Dover, Shubasz Gordon, 23, of Bloomfield, Conn., Cameren Judge, 21, of New Britain, Conn, and Gabriel E. Sherrod, 20, of Dover.

DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes confirmed the five are students at the Dover university. Golson, Barrett and Sherrod all are members of the school’s football squad; Gordon and Judge have exhausted their eligibility to play NCAA intercollegiate sports and no longer are on the Hornets roster, Holmes said.

Saint Augustine's University Releases 2014 Football Schedule

RALEIGH, North Carolina  -- Home games against Shaw University and Fayetteville State University and away games against CIAA division champions Winston-Salem State University and Virginia State University highlight the 2014 Saint Augustine's University football schedule, which was released Thursday, May 29, 2014.

The schedule includes four home contests this upcoming season. The Falcons will play six away games.

The season begins Sept. 6 with a trip north to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the first-ever meeting between both teams. A member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Indiana (Pa.) was ranked as high as seventh in the nation before ending the 2013 season ranked 24^th in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II poll. Game time is noon.

The Falcons play their first home game Sept. 13 against Wingate University at 1:30 p.m. In 2012, the Falcons beat Wingate 28-10 at home in the first-ever contest between both schools. Wingate plays in the traditionally tough South Atlantic Conference.

The Falcons hit the road again Sept. 20 to face Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at 3 p.m. central standard time. Last season, the Falcons handed Stillman a 35-7 trouncing at home. Stillman is a member of the always competitive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

The conference schedule begins Sept. 27 for the Falcons when they host Chowan University of the Northern Division at 1:30 p.m. The last time both teams met was 2009 with the Falcons winning 28-18 on the road.

After the Chowan game, the Falcons embark on a three-game road stretch including contests against conference division champions Virginia State and Winston-Salem State. The Falcons visit Virginia State of the Northern Division on Oct. 4 in Ettrick, Va., at 2 p.m. The last time both teams played was 2009 when the Falcons thumped the Trojans 27-14 at home.

The Falcons continue their road trek with a matchup against Livingstone College on Oct. 11 in Salisbury, N.C. at 1:30 p.m. This is the first of five games against Southern Division opponents. The Falcons have beaten Livingstone every season since 2002 including a 21-14 home victory on Homecoming Day in 2013.

On Oct. 18, the Falcons travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Southern Division champion Winston-Salem State at 1:30 p.m. The games between the Falcons and Winston-Salem State have been competitive since the Rams returned to the CIAA and last season was no different. The Falcons only trailed 7-3 at halftime against the nationally-ranked Rams at home before falling 35-17.

The Falcons return home to host Fayetteville State for Homecoming on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. Two seasons ago, the Falcons hosted Fayetteville State for Homecoming and topped the Broncos 34-28 in three overtimes.

The final away game of the season is against Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte N.C., on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Last season, the Falcons edged Johnson C. Smith at home 13-6. Their last win over Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, N.C. was 34-24 in 2010.

The last regular-season game is Nov. 8 against Shaw at home at 1:30 p.m. Two seasons ago, the Falcons downed their crosstown rival at home in the regular-season finale. They scored on the game's last play to win 43-42 in a thriller.

The five-game home schedule is highlighted by SSU's "Homecoming" game against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Norfolk State on October 4 at 2 p.m.

The home opener on September 13 against Fort Valley State will be an "Orange Out". Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Cheyney Wolves Release 2014-15 Hoop Schedule; Drinks Named Captain

CHEYNEY, Pennsylvania  -- Cheyney University Men's Basketball Coach Dominique Stephens has announced that Mike Drinks will be the captain of the Wolves 2014-15 squad.  The University has also released the 2014-15 men's basketball schedule.

Drinks will be a senior next year.  He netted a career high 16 points in a conference loss to Lock Haven during the 2013-14 season.  At the Annual All-Sports Banquet, Drinks was awarded the teams' sportsmanship award.  Drinks is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Delaware Valley Charter High School.  He is a majoring in Recreation and Leisure Management.

The 2014-15 schedule features home and home contests against the other eight schools in the PSAC East (Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Kutztown, Millersville, Shippensburg, West Chester and East Stroudsburg).  Through a random draw the Wolves will also battle six schools from the PSAC West.  Cheyney will play Gannon, Clarion and UPJ at home while traveling to Edinboro, Mercyhurst and IUP on the road.

The non-conference portion of the schedule features the Annual Battle of the Firsts.  Cheyney will host Lincoln in a rare Saturday night double header with the women's teams tipping off at 6:00 pm followed by the men.  The other non-league home contest will feature a tilt against the University of the Sciences.  The Wolves will travel to Virginia State and Bowie as well as open the season at the West Virginia State Tournament.  Opponents for the season opening tournament will be announced later this summer as will the game times for the away contests.

Johnson named Interim Head Football Coach at Cheyney U.

CHEYNEY, Pennsylvania  -- Anthony Johnson has been named Interim Head Football Coach. Johnson came to Cheyney in 2010 as the Offensive Coordinator under Head Coach Jeff Braxton and continued in that role under Coach Lockard. As the offensive coordinator, Johnson also coached the running backs and quarterbacks.

Prior to his appointment at Cheyney he spent three years at Salisbury University. While at Salisbury, Johnson was responsible for the running backs and slot backs which featured a nationally ranked offense and the number one rushing offense in the nation. Four of his backs earned all- conference honors and the Seagulls participated in the ECAC Southwest Championship Game.

Johnson was an All-Conference performer at Salisbury and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 at Salisbury University.  In 2004 as a player, the Seagulls finished the regular season undefeated, for only the third time in program history, and were ranked No.5 in the nation. He has won two conference championships and has two NCAA tournament appearances at Salisbury University.  Johnson earned a B.S. in Interdisciplinary studies specializing in Physical Education, while minoring in Athletic Coaching and a M.ED in Post-Secondary Education in 2010. He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association.

"I am extremely grateful, honored, and blessed that Cheyney University has recognized all the hard work I have been doing for my four years at this University," Johnson states.  "I will surround myself with great men that bring a wealth of knowledge along with a passion for the game. We are leaders of men first and foremost under my leadership.  I understand that being an educator is the most important aspect of being a coach," he adds.  "My passion, energy, and competitive drive are noteworthy.  I thrive off helping each student reach his full potential by teaching core values that will enable all students to become visionary leaders and responsible citizens in society and life."

Lastly he states "Now being appointed Cheyney's Head Football Coach, my primary objective would be to revive the Cheyney University football program by changing the culture of the student athletes. I envision instilling an unparalleled work ethic, strict discipline, and mature self-confidence in the student athletes, thereby developing winners who want to contribute and help the football program grow to be a championship caliber team.  I further envision building a structured program with a solid foundation based off recruitment, education, community service, and fundraising. This will be done through the recruitment of staff and the efforts to adhere to all NCAA rules and regulations would be imperative."

As the offensive coordinator Johnson played a significant role in obtaining the first PSAC win in snapping a 32 game losing streak and a 24 game PSAC East conference losing streak with a 20-17 win at Millersville. That same season the Wolves scored a career high 34 points against West Chester University, the second most the Wolves have ever put on the scoreboard against the Golden Rams. In 1979, the Wolves scored 36 points and won by two. Johnson also led the Wolves offense to beat Lincoln the first time in school history two years in a row. Johnson has spoken at several Glazier clinics up and down the east coast on the Triple option.

It hasn't gone un-noticed that in each of the last three years one student athlete has been presented an Academic Award by the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Football foundation and College Hall of Fame.  Johnson has implemented a structured academic system for the student athletes to follow in the Academic Success Center which has led to improved retention rates.  The football roster has grown every year since Johnson has been associated with the program.  There has been an average of fifteen football student athletes that have earned a 3.0 GPA or better and been on the Dean's List each semester.

UAPB Football sets dates for youth camp

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football team will hold its' annual Monte Coleman Summer Football Day Camp for youth grades first through eighth on June 12 and high school camp for grades ninth through 12th on June 13 at Golden Lion Stadium.

The cost of the camp is $50 per camper with each camper receiving lunch and a t-shirt. Registration each day will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. with camp activities beginning promptly at 9 a.m. each day.

Athletic trainers are will be on duty to treat minor injuries and sickness. Camp medical staff will not be responsible for administering prescribed medication.

WSSU coaching search narrows

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Tonia Walker, the athletics director at Winston-Salem State, says the search for the next men’s basketball coach has been going well.

Walker said on Wednesday that there were 52 who applied for the opening that came about after Bobby Collins resigned and took the opening at Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Collins spent eight seasons at WSSU, the second-longest tenured coach for the Rams behind the late Big House Gaines, who was there for 47 years.

“We had a strong pool of applicants,” Walker said. “We are trying to identify a coach who will make sure our academic success will be maintained and that we remain competitive in the CIAA and that the coach has the ability to turn boys into men.”

Walker said that the new coach will be named in the next two weeks.

Kunz, Newell, Graham and Woinowsky Join Chicago State Volleyball

CHICAGO, Illinois – Jana Kunz (Olton, Switzerland/ Kantonsschule Solothurn/Palm Beach State College), Selena Newell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter HS/Palm Beach State College), Amber Graham (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View HS/Arizona Western CC) and Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule/San Jacinto College) have each signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Chicago State University volleyball program for the 2014 campaign.

"This is a very solid, athletic class," Chicago State interim volleyball head coach Dawn Barnes said. "I'm excited about this group and what they each bring to our program both on and off the court. They all add depth and athleticism to their respective positions."

Kunz, a 6-2 setter, was an all-state selection in high school and attended the Swiss Youth National Team Training Camps. She played for TV Schönenwerd for four years. She played setter, middle blocker and opposite hitter for Palm Beach State College.

"Jana gives us size and bigger block on the right side," Barnes said. "She is a versatile player and will raise the level of play in the gym. She will make an immediate impact at several positions."

Newell, a 6-0 outside hitter, was voted most outstanding player in 2013 at Palm Beach State College. She was listed as one of Max Prep's top athletes in 2012. She helped Pembroke Pines Charter High School to a pair of district championships and a regional appearance. Newell made the Dean's List and honor roll in high school. In 2011-12 she played with the South Florida Volleyball Club and won first place in gold at the Capitol Hill Classic. She was named the MVP in 2010-11 with the Ohana Volleyball Club.

"Selena is very dynamic and is a true outside hitter," Barnes said. "Her versatility and athleticism will allow us to do some different things offensively. She will definitely add creativity and competitive energy."

Graham, a 5-10 outside hitter, averaged 3.06 kills and 2.23 digs per set for Arizona Western College last season. She finished second on the team in total points (302.0). Graham helped the Lady Matadors to a record of 20-6. Her club won the District C Championship and earned a trip to the national tournament.

"Amber brings the mentality of a hard nosed kid and has a great competitive spirit," Barnes said. "She is an amazing talent. She is dynamic, explosive and has different shot selections that will throw off a lot of teams. Her ability to find the holes on the court while in the air is something that we are looking forward to."

Woinowsky, a 5-11 outside hitter, was named First-Team All-Conference at San Jacinto College last year. She averaged 3.26 kills and 3.53 digs per set. Woinowsky totaled 408.5 points on the year. She helped San Jacinto to a 22-10 record.

"Elli will make an immediate impact to the Cougars' offense and defense," Barnes said. "She is a six rotation kid that plays at a very high level. Elli brings more than ball control to our team. She has an incredible work ethic and a solid passing platform."

These four join previously announced additions Chelsea Sheldon-Medina (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), Milica Zmiric (Sombor, Serbia/Gimnazija Veljko Petrovic), Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) and Alex Messner (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) to make up the eight-member 2014 recruiting class.

Chicago State opens the 2014 season in late August.
